The New Ghostbusters - Part 8

So these parents actually want their little girl to play with action figures and not their dolls or whatever's popular?
My daughter is 9 years old. She stopped playing with dolls several years ago. She now plays with Superhero action figures and Star Wars action figures (when not playing stuff like minecraft).....just a couple of days ago she bought Starlord's ship the "Milano" with her allowance. She liked that it came with the Peter Quill figure but was upset there was no Gamora figures at the store. We plan to go shopping for them this weekend. Apparently the girl action figures are very hard to find. It's like the characters for her Disney Marvel Infinity game. It took forever for her to get the Black Widow piece she wanted....because they did not sell them individually. The BWs only came in a two pack with another character (and thus twice the price).
That's fine and well, but do little girls really want to play with the latest Star Wars playset or whatever's more popular with girls at the moment?
As I said....my daughter wants the Star Wars stuff.....but the Rey character is hard to find.

Like I said, there's an abundance of female Marvel Legends on the racks that aren't being bought.
There are a lot of all kinds of characters on the racks that I see. My local WalMart has hundreds of Batman and Superman action figures that no one has bought. Do boys not like Batman and Superman anymore?

And I bet anything these female ghostbusters will not sell much.
From what I have seen for the last few decades....it all depends on how the movie does. The movie is a hit....the toys sell. The movie is a bust....the toys don't sell.

That's why I always thought the constant complaining about the lack of female action figures was dumb.
The biggest thing I get from your posts is.....you really seem to be bothered by women invading your all male fandom. Times are changing. You are going to have to actually interact with women now a days.

Give it a week to see things turn around.

Sadly, Hera stuff is harder than Rey stuff.

Just saw the new tv spot during the nba playoffs. They made it look a lot more fun, but who knows. They're going to make sure they get their money back.

Saw the latest trailer, looked even worse than all the previous ones. Since I am a fan of comedy, good movies and Ghostbusters, it seems that I will have to skip this one.

I might see it whenever it comes to TV.

You see that's the thing. Ghostbusters arent jokesters. They arent called Jokebusters... It's sad. They made stupid comedy of out concept of Ghostbusters, and now they still need to make it fun.

The amount of hate for this movie is absolutely ridiculous and blatantly sexist.

Yeah, Hollywood does too many reboots, remakes, and reimaginings, yet for some reason (and we all know the real reason) THIS is the one that causes everyone to go absolutely insane and go on organized "dislike" movements. Most disliked trailer of all time? Give me a break.

The trailers for Spy didn't impress me either but it turned out to be hilarious and totally different from what I expected. They focused on low brow slapstick humor in the marketing but it was actually quite clever with a lot of heart. Comedies don't always play well in trailers and no matter what people say, there's a lot of talent in this so I'm going to give it the fair chance it deserves. If I don't like it, so be it, but I hardly doubt it'll be among my most hated films ever.

And by the way, the original Ghostbusters was already "ruined" with Ghostbusters II and the animated series. Oh wait, no it wasn't. You can still enjoy the original just as much no matter what comes out after it.

I'm not sure you saw Murray's Venkeman...

Nope, not bothered at all. I wasn't bothered that Rey was the lead in Star Wars, not bothered that this new Star Wars movie has female lead. I'm excited about the Tomb Raider movie. Speaking of games Resident Evil and Tomb Raider who have had female leads have been my favorite games since they came out. And I don't have a problem watching female driven tv shows (Orange is the New Black and Greys Anatomy are on my tv must watch list, as was The L Word when it aired and when I binged it on Netflix)

"Interact with women"?? My wife, daughters and co-workers don't count?

Females in all my "fandoms" have been around for a very long time.

But when it comes to the constant complaining that "this character doesn't have a toy made out of them! And I bet it's because she's female!!" that's when it get bothersome.

Whoa.....I didn't realize they made different versions of the movie. The one I saw was one joke after another with Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis mugging for the cameras every chance they got. Where can I find this super serious version you saw?

Way to generalize the criticism this movie is getting.

Yes, some of the hate this movie is getting is from people complaining about the gender switch-around and such, but you seem to be overlooking the people who actually give constructive criticism as to why they aren't impressed with what they've seen so far.

For example, I don't dislike what I'm seeing in the marketing so far due to the actresses (although Leslie Jones is starting to grind my gears) or the Ghostbusters being female. That's not an issue with me.

What's an issue is that the comedy aspect they've presented so far, in my opinion, is not funny. The visuals, while not really that bad, are something I would have expected to see in the Eddy Murphy Haunted Mansion movie. Plus, the misguiding marketing to make the general audience believe it takes place in the same timeline as the original Ghostbusters, when in actuality it's a complete and utter reboot. Also taking into account Paul Feig's unprofessional responses to the extreme criticism of the movie on Twitter when he shouldn't even have bothered responding in the first place.

The only other positive aspects I've personally seen are: Kate McKinnon looks like she'll be a lot of fun in this, same as Chris Hemsworth. And I really love the concept of No-Ghost being the main villain, but aside than that, nothing I've seen from this movie has interested me.

Doesn't mean I'm not willing to give it a chance, but unless reviews come out stating if it's good or bad, I'm not keeping my expectations up.

But when it comes to the constant complaining that "this character doesn't have a toy made out of them! And I bet it's because she's female!!" that's when it get bothersome.

What's bothersome to me and others I have talked to is NOT being able to find the female toys. I don't know if you aren't looking for them for your daughters or you just happen to live in a place where they are plentiful....but I and many others cannot find them. In the town over from us they have a Disney store....great place to find a Princess dress or a Captain America or Thor costume....but try for Black Widow (who my daughter loves) and you are out of luck. We had to make her a BW for last Halloween.

Considering that Shane Black recently revealed that the IM3 villain was actually supposed to be a woman, and that they only changed it because some higher-up said that a woman character wouldn't sell toys, I'd definitely say there's some truth to that complaint.

There also was that whole controversy about Black Widow and Gamora being removed from the merchandise, which, well, it's true and speaks for itself.

The amount of hate for this movie is absolutely ridiculous and blatantly sexist.
#NotAllHaters :o

Ok, I can see where you're coming from. When my oldest wanted to be Catwoman for halloween years ago, and the only thing on the shelves were Halle Berry Catwoman or those sexy adult Catwoman costumes, and no comicbook Catwoman for girls, it was frustrating.

So, yeah, I can see your point. lol. :cwink:

The reverse sexism, for lack of a better term, that surrounds this movie is what is actually ridiculous. You can't criticize this movie without being labeled a sexist. The talent in this film haven't been given much to work with from what the trailers have given us and the entire thing seems like a blatant cash in which is has nothing to do with the lead's gender.

I have absolutely no problem with the concept of an all female Ghostbusters movie, I have a problem with it having unfunny actors in it, and a director who does extremely unfunny movies. The only thing that Feig has done that is watchable is "Freaks and Geeks" .

I don't, because it sounds like you are making the first movie out to be more than what it was.

It started as serious movie with hint of horror who dealt with paranormal activity. It set the tone. And for movie not to be that serious, it had humour between main characters, comedic elements and reliefs.

This on other hand looks like comedy, directed as comedy from beggining with sprinkles of original ghostbusters, but not as homage to originals but as parody of it.

With a name like "Pelvic Sorcery" I expected nothing less from your post. Toll level - moderate.

I think he means that the original had a different kind of humor, mostly from how situations evolved, and the interactions between the characters, as opposed as making funny faces and yelling like the new one.

You know what I mean.

Well.....when you say -
You see that's the thing. Ghostbusters arent jokesters. They arent called Jokebusters...

I take that to mean - The Ghostbusters in the original movie did NOT crack jokes, they did NOT mug for the camera, they did NOT do slapstick comedy....they were very serious about catching ghosts. There was no Bill Murray laying on the floor covered in ooze saying "I've been slimed." There was no Dan Aykroyd having a ghost unzip his pants and suggest sexual maneuvers. There was NO giant Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man rampaging through the city like Godzilla. The original Ghostbusters was the most serious horror movie to come out since the Exorcist.
