Ickk, I don't understand all this love for McKinnon

all she does is mug for the camera and talk in stupid voices

she's a less funny Jim Carrey, basically

....
Ed: props to Reitman for getting that it's not about gender but about the special place the original holds for all of us

I think there's way too much talk about gender. I think that many of the people who were complaining were actually lovers of the [original] movie, not haters of women. I think the lovers of the [original] movie felt there was some kind of sacrilege to re-do it, because it was a seminal part of their moviegoing experience as a 7- or 8-year-old. That's something that can't be minimized, and I totally respect that love.

Finally!

You know...I'm certain the backlash is for multiple reasons. I have always agreed that there are legitimate reasons to dislike the idea of this remake that are not misogynistic. But...To deny that there has been some misogynistic backlash from some of the less evolved, basement dwelling man babies, is just as ridiculous as saying the only reason for the backlash is misogyny.

When I met Ivan Reitman In the men's room at the test screening, I nearly passed out. He could see the admiration I have for Ghostbusters in the way I thanked him for his work. He was very gracious and thanked me for the kind words, but he was also very humble. I think he knows how beloved Ghostbusters is and I'm sure he gets a similar reception from other fans.

This is what I have been saying for months. I normally like McKinnon, she has a few funny lines, moments in this but overall it's just camera mugging and it is grating. It's especially irritating to me seeing as how everyone is assuming they are going to go gaga over her. Good to see people somewhat excited for something in this movie but her performance in this was just another aspect that just didn't land for me.

I loved her. But I am creepy in love with her and have been since The Big Gay Sketch show. Wiig bugged the crap out of me though. I want to puke every time I see the clip of her drinking the coffee after Hemsworth spits in it.

I love how much we agree on the movie overall, but have such wildly different opinions about some of the aspects. I'm thinking there are just some parts that are going to be very devisive, and have split reactions.

You have three leads that by in large people either love or hate, for different reasons.

No offense to Wiig, I do like her, but she doesn't look like she's really putting in much effort here.

That's not really her fault, really comes down to the script. Her and McCarthy's old relationship is pretty much the center of their character arc but otherwise they aren't given much to do carry the movie comedically like they are in their usual movies with Feig. They also don't have the crutch of an R rating to throw out a bunch of funny expletive laden improve lines for Feig and the editors to choose from.
Wiig I normally love but I can't recall another funny scene or line from her that they haven't been playing ad nauseam in all of the trailers and TV spots.
One of the funniest moments from McKinnon was the mannequin scene but the trailer ruined that for anyone planning on seeing this but I don't blame anyone for that, all comedy trailers have to understandably do it.
For everyone who doesn't like or is worried about McCarthy doing her usual schtick in this I think they will be surprised just how low key she is in this.

That's fair.

I dunno what to think about this anymore. I don't have a problem with women being Ghostbusters. I have a problem with how the filmmakers have handled that idea. Between it being a full on remake where original cast members appear but not as themselves instead of doing a passing of the torch sequel, to putting emphasis on the backlash from misogynists during promotion of the movie, this new Ghostbusters feels less like a movie and more like a propaganda statement.

And all the humor on display makes it look like a spoof of Ghostbusters than the kind of humor on display in the original Ghostbusters like that Midnight Edge video suggested.

Sure, the fact that it's screening and reviews not being held for too long may suggest some confidence, but Warcraft screened even sooner relative to its release than Ghostbusters did and that didn't turn out so well. On top of that, the fact that Eric Snider said he's seeing it on the July 12th despite the fact that embargoes lift on the 10th according to him suggests that the studio is controlling who gets to see it when. Those who are overeager get to see it sooner while those who are potentially more critical see it closer to release.

How tame is it humor wise, because this thing has had trailers and commercials on a lot of kiddie fare. About Marvel movie level?

Other than Hemsworth talking about ghost boobs and Wiig being awkwardly rapey towards Hemsworth I don't remember anything lewd or vulgar. Oh, wait, that pelvic thrust and proton pistol lick...

I feel like they have shown all the lewd, loud, obnoxious stuff in the trailers, and left out any of the meat of the story or the strengths of the film. It's really a bad marketing campaign.

Yeah I don't remember anything especially lewd either.
bluejake - the one standout scene that really makes me laugh to this day didn't come from the principal cast it was the scene

with the guy flipping the bird in assorted ways, sure it was juvenile but it was damn funny

I really liked the Ed Bagley Jr. gag where they were told that he died years before, and then he shows up and the girls look confused. Before its revealed to be a misunderstanding about his father. That was really corny, but seemed like a throw back to a different kind of humor that we don't see in movies much anymore.

I totally forgot about that part, that gag definitely landed for me too.

the negative response to the film, or I should say, to the idea of the film is so big that the director even talks about it and responds to it in the new/current issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland. The headline of the article says " Director Paul Feig takes on the internet haters"

Again, I ask, why can't the movie just look unfunny to us? Why does it have to be a gender thing?

Seriously... it just doesn't look funny. I don't think anyone really cares about the cast.

Is this what we've been reduced to? A studio can make a crappy movie, and if we all dislike it, it must be because we're sexist and not because we dislike the crappy movie? So all crappy movies just get a pass now?

That is like saying, "why can't I just hate Obama and it not be a race thing". Of course that is possible. But to suggest that applies to everyone is just wrong. 100% wrong.

And it has nothing to do with the movie looking bad. The point has always been the size of the reaction, the reaction that came before one single frame of the film was seen. Suddenly everyone is a Ghostbusters fan, everyone's favorite movie, and remaking it is the worst thing in history. It is amazing so many fans are out there, and yet the film hasn't had a bigger presence the last 20 years. The last two TMNT movies have been disasters, barely a peep in comparison. BvS was awful, not nearly the reaction and that is even with how it went down. The new Power Rangers stuff makes Ghostbusters look faithful. Not nearly the reaction. The proportion of the reaction has been telling.

When I was in the theater watching Dory this week, the trailer for this film came on. I don't like it. But the little girl sitting with her mother seemed rather vocal in her enthusiasm. Same with plenty of the kids. While grown men are crying, it doesn't seem to be angering anyone else.

Yeah, the early responses has really, really colored the "criticism" of the movie. I'm sorry, but I've seen the same kind of reactions and responses in various other situations to not be able to recognize the underlying sexism in the early criticisms. The criticisms became a bit more fair once trailers started showing up.

You can dislike it for reasons that are not sexist. That doesn't mean there was not sexist backlash. Again, this is not an "either, or" situation.

Kids respond to crappy movies? What else is new.
