And then people claim there is no sexism here.Word among top studio brass is this will be the most successful film of the summer!
This will result in every franchise being womenfied from MARVEL heroes undergoing the same sex changes as in the comics to James Bond becoming Jane Bond.
... Scary thing is that's how suits would see this if it's successful.
Thank God, it's not going to be!
I can only see this taking in money from people curious to see how low they go.
And then people claim there is no sexism here.
You attempt at making a joke was poor, as either a) you don't understand satire or b) don't understand that by casting women as the central problem you are making a sexist joke, which is in bad taste either way, along with just being a bad joke. And of course as everyone with a brain knows, all jokes are grounded in the person's perspective. Namely, you are showing your true colors. This is of course compounded by you labeling feminist. As is playing the "us males are repressed card". "You mean I am not allowed to make tasteless, sexist jokes? REPRESSED!" Yeah, that is a really bad argument.Actually people claim feminists can't take a joke. And you just proved them right. Feminists knock us guys down jokingly all the time. How come women can make fun of their husbands but the second a guy makes a joke about his wife women look at him like he's just sinned?
It's become a running gag of this film and a meme at this point. It's the funniest for and against reaction I've ever seen. If people were against women being heroes you would have had all this controversy to this level surrounding Force Awakens. Instead the audience embraced that film for the most part (yeah sure there were some sexists, but claiming "sexists! World is filled with sexists against female movie heroes!" The same year Force Awakens took in the box office it did - trying to make someone believe that without laughing over how absurd that is - is impossible) with articles praising TFA having a diverse cast - here all the articles are about how controversial it is with a massive backlash attached. Force Awakens showed us how things like this go if it actually works. It showed us the majority of the people don't care. At all. Yet somehow the world has taken a nose dive in a matter of months in regards to this film? Come on, please. If it looked even remotely good - it would be received like TFA not like the second coming of the ghost from hell.
Yeah, it totally is. But thanks for making your views on it clear. Can't tell if your being sarcastic or not but what he wrote was not sexist at all.
As is playing the "us males are repressed card". "You mean I am not allowed to make tasteless, sexist jokes? REPRESSED!" Yeah, that is a really bad argument.
I am not behind the movie. I think it looks bad. What I am not behind is those attacking it out of a ugly base instinct. If this movie fails it is because it is bad, not because they cast women. And yet you fixated on the fact that they cast women. As said this film is damaging. I don't see how feminists can possibly, in my wildest dreams get behind this.
Studio chief "Let's make an all female Ghostbusters movie!" "It has to be good." "No it doesn't we have controversy on our sides and feminists will love it because it has women heroes in it" "It has to be good" "No, it can be crap - let the controversy sell it." And the scary thing is with a lot of people -- that's working.
It's doing the opposite of Force Awakens and damaging the progress that movie made. Me, sexist? The Force Awakens poster is hanging over my wall! That was my favorite movie of last year and favorite Blockbuster so far of last summer, through this summer. To me, that was progress. They didn't stop to go "hey, look at me, we're so cool to be making a movie about a female hero that we're going to shove it down your throats! That's how hip and edgy we are."
This thing is a joke. A damaging joke at that.
> The very notion and idea of how it seems they got to it - "let the fact that it's revolutionary by starring women sell it, who cares if it's good?"
> The very fact that they keep pointing to that being the idea of it - 60% of the jokes are something getting all over a certain area, how low brow can you get? That's progress???
> "Let's make the men take on the stereotypical women roles in films from a very very long time ago to be hip and edgy and with it!" Whimpering man going to them like a damsel in distress - check, traditional female role of secretary going to a guy who usually plays the hero - check. Come on, who can't see what they're doing here light as day?
> They're not going to all new places, rather using the mold of the former cast... hell, they're even doing this with Slimer "let's be so revolutionary by throwing lipstick and a wig on someone like Slimer!" - check
They knew what they were doing. They made this film less about it being original and more about "hey look at us, we're so daring to be making a Ghostbuster film with women, we're gonna keep on reminding you how daring we are!" That's really lame at this stage in the game, especially after 'Force Awakens.' It's feels more like a parody of what a female action hero movie or action comedy should be going "look how hip we are." That is why people are turning against it. In the age of 'Force Awakens' which showed us how to do a female action hero movie right, this just feels like a damaging step backwards in time.

Oh, I am saying you are playing the victim And you know what makes something sexist? A fixation on the female part of the equation as an inherent negative. Attempting to disguise it as a joke does not change that. Especially as you get fairly serious about being happy that this movie will fail and thus not lead to this hell of female lead flicks.I never said men play victims. Only it's one thing that is plain as day - if you don't like something, you're a sexist. If you make a joke about a woman, you're a sexist. If a woman make a joke about a man, women go "you go girl!" So, yeah the fact that some jump to offense lightning quick is a joke to me.
Zooey Deschanel she would have been great! She has an amazing and stand out personality. She's quirky, funny, and always seems to be glowing with life. In other words, she would have been perfect as a Ghostbuster. I see her as kind of being a mix between Egon and Peter.
That's the vibe that McKinnon gave me in the movie.
They are not showing a lot...seriously, I'm amazed at how little is ending up in the trailers. Holtzman is frenetic, sardonic, sarcastic, hip and flirts with men and women alike. At least in the test screening she was.McKinnon in everything they've shown comes off as more Egon. I don't see any signs of the charisma that points to her possibly being an excellent game or talk show host. She has the nutty side, but Peter was more than just nutty to me. As said, his character (and not just because they showed it) came off as a game or talk show host. I can see Deschanel easily carrying a kind of Jonathan Ross type show, the character they're showing McKinnon in this film as - I don't see that.
To be clear, not saying she should be Peter. Rather, the intelligence and fascination with science that Egon has with the charisma of a game or talk show host. A quirkier and more people friendly version of Malcolm from 'Jurassic Park;' if you were to combine Peter and Egon that's the fictional character I see.
Did you just compare McCarthy and Wiig to Sandler and James? How in the hell... That is just insane. McCarthy does a lot of crap, but she is clearly talented and has shown it. She has more great movies to her name then those two idiots combined. Same for Wiig.I mean... I don't like the cast, but that's because I don't think they're funny.
I would keep McKinnon though. She's good.
If the cast had been something more like this instead of people we don't find funny, there would've been less of an issue.
Kate McKinnon
Emma Stone
Carrie Brownstein
Tina Fey
Amy Poehler
Maya Rudolph
Kaitlyn Olsen
Rashida Jones
Any combination of these gals would've been great with most people. The problem is McCarthy, Wiig, and Jones. They are our female versions of Adam Sandler and Kevin James.
Even mixing it up with today's funny males would've been a good strategy too, and have a more well-rounded team.
Bill Hader
Fred Armisen
Paul Rudd
Jason Segal
^ I really don't think ANYONE would've had an issue with this.
I wonder which old banned poster Kyle is.![]()
If you were a woman, you wouldn't need to be covering up the blatantly sexist things you said by faking concern that doesn't make a lick of sense in context. There is no worse excuse then, "well if I say it is sexist, but if a woman says it its not". Yep, pretty much points out how sexist your original statement was.Yeah, I'm fixated on the fact that they cast women because this is freaking DAMAGING to women action movies. This is Catwoman and Elektra 2.0.
I remember Catwoman. That film was offensive as hell to me. "This film is about a female hero, I know let's make the villain a makeup company! That's so hip!" Some guys maybe hated that because it was too "feminine" for them, I loathed it because that route felt sexist as hell to me. Guys wrote it and directed it, that's not a surprise at all to me - "girls like makeup, let's put that the center of this film!" - that film was sexist as hell to me and I'm betting many women were offended as well.
Here's the damaging thing. I know how suits think. They want to do things the easy way - they want to do it quick and they want to do it fast. This film being crap and it being successful will tell suits "you can make quick and easy cash by making terrible films as long as you have a female hero in it, you can sell them crap and they'll buy into it!" I can tell you - crap is a heck of a lot easier to make.
Have enough Catwoman, Elektras, and Ghostbusters overshadowing Force Awakens, Rogue One, and Wonder Woman - it's going to recreate largely the notion that people had prior to Force Awakens. I mean, come on, I can't be the only one who remembers what that notion was - "female action movies are crap." What created the notion? That there were so many of them failing on a very noticeable level. It will make the ones that succeed appear like they were flukes. I've waited for years for someone to show people that that notion is a ridiculous one that only exists because studios are pandering to the audience, exactly like they're doing here. I was waiting for someone to make a Force Awakens - a female action hero movie that succeeds because it doesn't give a damn that it's a female action hero movie, that just is.
But, yeah, sure I'm a sexist because I'm a man who cares about female action hero films and don't want studios to fall back into the same direction they were in before. But, okay, yeah I'm a sexist because I'm a guy and I care that these films be good and not pander so that studios won't rush into giving us more films with the quality of Catwomans, Elektras, Aeon Fluxes, and Ghostbusters to undo the great progress that has been made.
The funniest and most absurd point is - if I was a woman saying this, Darth you wouldn't try to silence me by screaming "sexist."
What? No man is allowed to speak about a woman action movie that's pandering over aiming for greatness?
As per the whole wives can talk about husbands, but husband can't talk about wives without it being sexist is asinine to me. I'm a minority, I'm bi and I'm hispanic. Some LGBT people, the second you say something they don't like scream "homophobic!" And some hispanics, the second you say something they don't like scream "racist!" I criticize them for doing so too. Sometimes it's just a variation on the boy who cried wolf. I point hypocrisy out when I see it.
As per changing character races, genders, and sexualities - yeah, I don't view that as progress from a minority stand point. They're not doing that here beat by beat, but they might as well because they're more than half way there already. I agree with Stan Lee with why he said Peter Parker should never be gay. What's the point? Where's the evolution in progress? We'd be standing behind a straight hero because people don't believe we can have a gay new hero who can be popular and stand up tall and proud by himself. Lee further said that while he doesn't want to see Peter that way, he'd like to see a new character like that and hell, he'd even do it himself. To me, that's progress. As a minority - that's how I see progress. As a minority not needing a 'majority' to prop you up and to sell you because they don't think your group can stand by itself. If there was a version like this film for LGBT and hispanics that is doing as much pandering as this film is, I know I'd be mad.
My dream is for this film to flop so freaking hard that it's a kick in the whatever - and that Rogue One soars at box office and that Wonder Woman (if good to great as well) soars at box office. Sending home to suits: no you can't sell controversy, you can't sell tickets by pandering - take it seriously. I can't believe the same guy who gave us 'Spy' gave us this, 'Spy' was subtle as hell in comparison and was an amazing movie that did things this film is aiming for and failing beyond miserably at because 'Ghostbusters' cares more about it being a female action movie hoisting neon signs everywhere than it does being a good film. They're selling controversy and pandering and the sad, funny, and absurd part is - people are buying right into it (if you look at my examples, that's what they would be doing there too - selling controversy and pandering).

If you were a woman, you wouldn't need to be covering up the blatantly sexist things you said by faking concern that doesn't make a lick of sense in context. There is no worse excuse then, "well if I say it is sexist, but if a woman says it its not". Yep, pretty much points out how sexist your original statement was.![]()
