I have to admit that the PS3's rebound is impressive.

Time will tell how long this lasts.

I dont think there really is any "rebound" i mean its never really been down, it just was slowly climbing up, now its begining to pick up a bit of speed.

By the time the PS3 overtakes the 360(if it happens at all), we'll already be on to the next generation of consoles, so itll be irrelevant. I dont see this gen last longer than 3 more yrs.

If this gen lasts less than 3 more years I see next gen being a complete failure. It's far too soon for the next Nintendo system, the next Xbox, and Playstation 4.

I think this gen has 5 years atleast left in it. The PS3 is just picking up some real steam, the Wii is selling like hot cakes, why stop now? The only reason I can see would be if the 360 stopped production early, like with the origional Xbox just after about 4 years, and the other consoles have to release earlier to keep up on graphics. However IMO that would be a mistake, you need a grace period inbetween console life cycles.

I mean heck, only late in it's life did they really start tapping into the PS2's potential. Ppl always say these consoles reach their limit early then some developer proves them wrong. If we're still seeing PS2 games being produced I just can't see this gen of consoles dying anytime soon.

I have a Wii right now, but I really want a 360 for more genres of games and for more M rated games. I love my Wii and swinging around my den. But sometimes I miss just sitting down with a controller in my hand, and running through levels like that. I think in this generation (its probably been stated a grip already) but you need Wii and another console to get the most out of these amazing systems.

I voted for X-Box, cause when I get one, I'm getting it in my room, leave the Wii in the big room. Play games from bed is what I like to do.

it should be extended by atleast a year because of the high price of the PS3 and 360 intially. they'll cost reduce and drop price at a similar speed, so to maximise mass market adoption they have to stay with that console for longer. also developers and publishers are finding game production almost unprofitable because of rising costs. the next gen only brings even more cost that they might not be able to deal with.

this gen has at LEAST 4 years left. the PS2 came out in 2000 and it wasn't until last year that everyone started considering the 360 and PS3 "current gen". so PS2 was "current gen" for 6 years and it's just NOW dying out (at a slow pace at that). so...if you go by that same logic, they probably won't release PS4 until late 2012 or 2013.

Judging from the way Nintendo and Sony release their consoles we still have at least four years left as you said. If Microsoft releases a console in 2009/2010 they're shooting themselves in the foot because it'll be just too soon especially with the way prices are.

If MS does release another console in about 3 yrs(which is likely), itll usher in the next-next gen as Sony and Nintendo will follow suit, they wont sit there and think "o look at them, they are shooting themselves in the foot".

it will usher in the next gen, but it will be too soon (similar to 360). they'll get a bunch of money from introducing the new gen, but they'll be "shooting themselves in the foot" because they'll be doing what Sega did with the Dreamcast. they'll be releasing their system too early and PS and Nintendo will have a couple of years of research and development on the 3rd Xbox. so while releasing their console a year or two ahead of the competition is ideal for getting a head start, the console will suffer from not releasing when the other 2 are. that was Dreamcast's downfall. they released it too soon, before the market was ready.

It's far too soon for nex-gen.

Sega ushered in the last gen too early and look at where it got them. They got annihilated by the Playstation 2.

Microsoft ushered in the current gen at a decent time but they rushed to get first in the market and as a result many a 360 have shoddy hardware.

Microsoft may usher in again the next gen, but Sony and Nintendo won't follow suit. They prefer to wait at least 5 - 6 years before releasing a new console and the current gen just started for crying out loud. Microsoft will shoot themselves if they release too early because people who just bought a 360 aren't going to want to get the next Xbox so soon.

Dreamcast's problem wasn't it's release date it was a lack of 3rd party support, the same probelm the Sega Saturn had. I'd expect that next year we'll get the first annoucements of new systems and the first one will be released in 2010 or 2011. Microsoft could release the next X-Box in 2 years and it'll be a success as long as they have the 3rd party support they currently do.

ON TOP of the fact that it was released a year earlier than the other consoles. many gamers and developers were turned off by the Dreamcast coming out so soon after the Sega Saturn. it had only been a 4 year gap.

maybe a new Xbox, but the PS3 is just picking up steam. they're not gonna release another system for AT LEAST 4 more years MINIMUM and i doubt Nintendo will either.

it would be an initial success (when it comes out) but that doesn't mean it will have the legs to stand up to whenever the PS4 or next Nintendo hit the shelves.

no I think the DC's problem was it came out too early. It had great games, lots of exclusives you coudlnt find elsewhere. I dont think the software was its problem.

I dont think MS could reelase a successful system in 2 years. Its way too soon. How many consumers would be willing to jump the gun and follow so soon when many are just now getting into the current gen stuff. I dont see many 3rd party companies doing so either when they already have large (and still growing) install bases right now. There is no incentive to jump forward now

IA, Sony and Intendo would be dumb too. The PS3 is a very powerful system as it is and its potential has yet to be untapped. Sony isnt going to push forward and move onto the next big thing when they are only now getting some great momentum with the PS3. Developers will have a much better feel for it down the line. As for Nintendo, they are doing so well, that they dont see them needing to go with a new system soon either. 4 years minimum seems about right for both

exactly. i have no doubt that the 3rd parties dropping Dreamcast was it's downfall but the fact that it was released only 4 years after Sega Saturn was a major contributor to those 3rd parties dropping Sega...as quoted from Wiki...

"In particular, Sega's attempt to quickly kill off the struggling Saturn (which lagged in North America and Europe) in favour of Dreamcast had angered many third-party developers in Japan, where the Saturn had still been able to hold its own."

in TOTAL agreement here.

But with the increasing costs of development do you think that 3rd party developers would be willing to support a new system by Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo in 2 - 3 years

That's a bold claim. Care to defend it?

Agreed, ppl have been saying that the Wii will lose steam any moment now for months...yet it's still a freakin' juggernaut held back only by supply. Let's face it, it's easy to use and get into, the health nuts love it, it's very cheap. The Wii has captured the same appeal the original NES had. I'll admit I haven't bought one nor plan to, it just doesn't appeal to me, but it's king of this console generation. The 360's sales have slowed down and been surpassed in other countries outside of North America, the PS3's price point will hold it back from doing PS2 numbers (atleast for awhile), the Wii doesn't seem to know how to slow down tho. Ppl may get bored of it eventually, but it just sells too damn well everywhere.

i think as long as games come out for the wii that people will want to play.. it wont slow down... i got smash bros, played it.. started to get bored and put down my wii mote......then mario kart came out..... and havent put it down since.....but soon as i get bored with that, wii fit will be out...

i plan on gettin a xbox360... gta 4 alone makes it worth it. but i dont see the wii slowing down, just more households with one or two next gen systems.

The original X-Box came out in 2001, the 360 in 2005 and most every developer in making games for it, if the next X-Box comes out in 2010, that's an extra year more that they got out of the 360 than the original X-Box.

Saturn came out 4 months before the original Playstation but failed quickly, why? Little to no 3rd party support. So they decided to bail and develop the Dreamcast, but didn't repair their 3rd party ties and the Dreamcast came out with great exclusives, but again little to no 3rd party support and once again was crushed by the competetion. N64 and GameCube lagged behind in the past two console races why? They had the great exclusives Nintendo always does, but little 3rd party support. Why has the PS3 lagged behind so much this generation, little 3rd party support. 3rd party support means everything in the video game business because 3rd party support means more games and people buy video games systems for games.

and how does the PS3 have little 3rd party support? I think they are doing pretty fine here. They dont have a Sega or Nintendo like situation with this console

The PS3 is doing well; the nay-sayers don't know what their talking about.

To compare the Playstation to Sega and Nintendo's consoles is rather absurd. They still have a substantial amount of third party support with EA, Activision, Konami, Square-Enix, Take-Two, Ubi-Soft, Capcom, and others.

Sega lacked complete third party support by the time the Dreamcast came in the only companies that developed for it were pretty much Sega, Namco, and Capcom.

Nintendo has third party support but lacked third party exclusives for the most part.

Sony has both third party support and major third party exclusives (Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy).
