Are they going to be optional installs tho? In the "How do you feel about this?" thread, LA posted a thread where someone from Microsoft said, "Microsoft has also degined not to place limits on the amount of hard drive space MMO developers can use, although Microsoft designer Ian Lewis offered this one Caveat. "Feel free to require 30GB for your game - that's just going to make your potential audience a lot smaller.""

"Require 30GB of hard drive space", that to me sounds like it's up to the developers. So it may not be optional on the 360, which is exactly, exactly, the same thing as the PS3. Both would be decisions the developer can make, just that the 360 didn't make hard drives mandatory and about 20% of 360 owners may have to buy hard drives to play certain games. That's what I mean when I said I was confused, it's "It's about damn time MS did this, awesome, they improved on the PS3's idea of installs" when MS does it, and when Sony does it it's "OMG, how could they FORCE installs, Sony hates everyone."

something the PS3 has done since the beginning was slammed but praised now on the 360. Not all games need installs and for those that utilize one, there are more that are optional as opposed to mandatory, so I really think this is being blown out of proportion. The PS3 and its initial 60gb HDD was also slammed bc people thought the 20gb on the 360 was adequate enough and didnt se how anyone could ever use up or need that much space (60gb on a system) but of course since then MS has changed its base HDD to 60gb and offers one up to 120gb as they are becoming more necesary to use all the features of the system. Its nothing new here

That article/comment from Microsoft is at least a year old, I remember reading it when it was first released. It was definitely published well before the announcement of optional installs. No company took them up on it, because like they said, their audience would be smaller.

Well so far, Rock Band is selling like hotcakes on the Wii...but I guess it shouldn't be surprising, considering it's one of the kings of casual games. GHIII sold better on the Wii than any other system, so I guess it makes sense that RB will sell great too.

Guitar hero: On Tour has become the best selling title Activision has ever had on the DS. Good for them.

How long is Wii Play going to be in the top five?

That's the reason 95% of the people who bought it bought it. I worked at Circuit City until April this year, and that was just the standard.

You buy a wii, you also buy Wii Play to go with it as a second remote. Most people don't even look to see what the game part is. They just see a second wiimote with an extra game for only $10 extra than the wiimote by itself, so they get that.

Finally, finally, I'm getting my PS3 next week. 80GB system, and MGS 4 in all its glory :woot:

I went to Gamestop last week, and a sales rep told me that they will be selling a new PS3 that is 80GB with no BC, and it will be sold for $399, in a month or so. That sounds like a great deal to me, since I have gave away pretty much all the PS2 games I had, so BC isn't something that is important to me. Has anyone else heard about this new PS3 model?

I always laugh when someone talks about this being the greatest gaming experience ever. Their opinion is great and I'm not knocking it, but it's still funny to hear...mostly due to the fact that games this generation are practically identical to the last generation, just shinier. :p

Ya, Sony announced it at E3 and we've talked about it for a bit. It's basically the 40GB with double the hard drive space. You can still install Linux on it, it has Bluetooth, wifi, etc, just lacks PS2 BC. It will however still have PS1 BC.

I agree that it is similar to previous gens, but also do think it's a great generation of gaming. I know that sounds odd but take MGS4 for example. It's similar to previous MGS's, but it's by far the best, and in fact it's one of the best games...maybe the best game I've ever played. Uncharted is similar to Tomb Raider, however it's superior in so many ways it's not funny. CoD4 is an FPS and I've played many FPS's, but it's also one of the best I've ever played. Warhawk takes what C&C renegade did and times it by 10 to make a great gaming experience. SF4 is looking to outdo SF2 (SF3 may keep the crown as best SF IMO tho). A new Twisted Metal is on the way (tho Black will be hard to top). Oblivion's one of the best RPG's of all time.

So I agree that a lot of the best games are similar to previous gen, but they add so much in doing so that they overshadow their previous versions IMO. If LBP, and inFAMOUS lives up to the hype, and FFXIII is better than XII or X, and they come out with one more unique game like Shadow of the Colossus, then I'd say hands down it's my favorite gen thus far. Genesis had some fun MP games like general chaos, and Xmen 2. SNES had many great games as well (currently playing Chrono Trigger in fact). So did PS1, and PS2. However game companies have turned it up a notch in production value this gen IMO, even if gameplay and storylines stay similar. Uncharted and MGS4 are good shows of this, Uncharted felt very very close to being in a movie.

I actually agree with your sentament here.

My only gripe I have had with this gen in gaming is it is becoming sequel overload. I just hope we see some of the original idea's that are coming soon. I do hope we see team Ico's project soon...plus the new Batman game has the potential to be amazing.

MGS4 is a fantastic title, but still has way too much time devoted to watching a movie and not so much gameplay. Uncharted delivered more on the game/movie balance in my opinion. Both were fantastic though.

I agree about this gen being sequal crazy. Look at the 2 biggest titles for the 360 and PS3, Halo 3, and MGS4.

I think this is the gen of 4's tho heh, for a bit it seemed like every game I bought had a 4 on it. Call of Duty 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, Soul Caliber 4, Street Fighter 4 is coming out soon. I'm sure I missed a few.

Dead or Alive, Devil May Cry.

about this whole playing the same games thing. really that's always been the case there more change within a generation than between them because games are all ways build and refining the previous interations. at least without some thing like a move to 3d, and there were 3d games before the 3d consoles, they just weren't on the previous systems, they were on pcs and arcades. but the immersion and subtlety and clarity of worlds sky rockets. every area of every game can say more about that world, be more memorable and distinct.

one of Sony's strategies, this gen has been to try and focus on developing original IPs, which is why they've passed on exclusive deals with existing franchises. Its been hit and miss, so far. They've had a clunker like Lair and a Heavenly Sword, which didnt do as well as expected, but they've created found great potential for new series with titles like Uncharted, Motorstorm, soon LittleBigPlanet and possibly Heavy Rain and Infamous

I read that the new 80GB PS3 model will only have 2 USB ports. Do I really need more than 2 USBs?

Honestly hadn't heard that, but I guess it depends on what you do with it. The USB ports are what you charge your controller with via a cable, so when the powers out on a controller you need that slot. So if you plan on going 4 player crazy and never keep your controllers charged, I guess it can be a problem.

Also I have Linux on my PS3, which means when I switch to it I'm using a keyboard and mouse, and my controller for emulators. In that case 3 usb ports are needed as the sixaxis controller has to be plugged in via USB to use it on emulators unless you download the Bluetooth driver for that emulator.

On top of that I keep the USB link cable for the PSP in at all times usually as well as it's the same thing as the charger for the PS3 sixaxis controller as well.

I guess I'm saying you don't need them all, but it's nice to have them, and you might have to juggle a few things.
