The Nun - New Line's Next Conjuring Spinoff

Taissa Farmiga was really bland as the lead. A cheap and pointless spinoff.

saw this last night, the biggest flaw with this movie for me is that it never establishes or defines the power that the nun has. In one scene it uses your fears against you and then in the next it's able to physically alter the real world to try to kill you, very inconsistent with it's scares and how they come about that the film left me totally confused at times instead of scared. The lack of rules established in this movie was quite off putting.

Wasn't it established in TC2 that knowing the demon's name gives you dominion over it? Apparently that's not the case with The Nun :hmm

Got a question for all you guys who have seen the movie.

I have a pretty severe snake-phobia and I've heard that they make an appearance in the movie. So my question, just how much ? Like, is it just one scene, or am I gonna have to skip this one in theaters because of them. They are the only thing that make my skin crawl.

They are the only thing that make my skin crawl.
Isn't that the point of a horror movie? :cwink:

But on the real, I think there's only a few scenes with snakes. and they aren't that long. It's definitely less than
4
scenes of them.

Yeah, it is the point, but snakes are a deal breaker for me. I can't even look a picture of one without wanting to jump out of my skin. It's not a preferable level of fear I want in my theater viewing. I knew it was coming, given the moniker Marquis of snakes, but hope dies last and all that.

Thanks for the info anyway. I'll think about it for a couple of days and decide if I want to watch it in the cinema or wait for a few months for a digital release and just fast-forward those effing scenes.

I just remember two scenes
with a snake but it was so dark I actually could barely tell what it was.

I don't remember much snake-related stuff, just one scene where
a snake-like creature crawls out of a boy's mouth

Yeah, uhhh, deal-breaker. Thanks for that mental image. And just before my bedtime too. Now I'm having flashbacks to that snake cult episode of The X Files.

it really is hard to tell what happening in this particular scene because of how dark the scene is and it's not as graphic as it sounds.

Why miss the whole film because of a single moment in the film? Just close your eyes during that snake part. That's what I do for scenes with spiders. I'm an arachnophobe. I can't even stand looking at most spiders. But I wouldnt miss a whole film just because a spider is in screen for a few seconds.

Someone here that has seen the film can tell you what precedes the snake moment and you'll know when to close your eyes.

The scenes are not that long, and usually involve the
boy.
So just close your eyes whenever
he shows up :)

Nah...it wasn't very good. Far too many jump scares instead of a decent story, and some of the dialogue was downright painful. The nod to The Conjuring was kinda neat, but seemed more like an afterthought.

The trailer for Halloween was pretty fantastic, though.

It has a couple of very memorably creepy shots, but that's about it. The connective tissue to The Conjuring is about as effective as a "previously on AMC's blah blah blah". All reused, repurposed footage from a better movie.

Disappointed by the reviews, but still planning on catching this in theaters anyway. I remain a fan of both the Conjuring-verse and anything that James Wan is involved in! Hopefully The Conjuring 3 and The Crooked Man turn out better next year (The Crooked Man Spinoff Still In Development At New Line - IMDb).
Thanks for that. Didn’t know there was a Crooked Man film coming out. If Conjuring 3 is as good as the first 2 then the universe will be back on track for sure.

Mark Kermode's review of this film is hilarious.

MESS! I read the script for it a while back and it's incredible how they destroyed it. In the original script the story is basically the same but:
- they added so many stupid 'funny' moments like Franchie taking that cross from the graveyard with him
- they added 'extra' stuff to scary scenes - the other nun in the beginning, the way original beginning was was simply scared nun hanging herself which was so much more effective, the dumb jump scare in the coffin etc.
- Hardy showed instead of just telling like with Father Burke's past
- the impossibly mangled ending. The twist of Frenchie being that dude who traumatized Lorraine is the same but the original actually has BRAND NEW SCENE with the Warrens with them walking in Frenchie's house right after he kills his wife. Then Lorraine looks in the mirror and sees Valak. What the ****? WB couldn't be bothered to bring them to shoot 15 seconds scene they just put old footage there?

Basically they made everything cheaper and shorter than it was, they also added that spitting the blood of Jesus stuff

What a shame. The story is actually so incoherent people are confused if Irene is Lorraine. I saw a comment somewhere in inevitable sequel they will actually go down that road.

I liked the atmosphere in some scenes, the music was wonderful and the actors did a great job, especially Taissa who has the same grace Vera has. But what a wasted opportunity.
Damn... I wonder who did the rewrites on this...

I saw it today. I have no strong feelings about it either way. The atmosphere was good, but the dialogue was surprisingly bad.

HAHAHAHAH, the Nunjuring. Now I can't stop calling it that. Man, he just loses it there at the end with all of those nun puns.

I may go to see it after all knowing when the snakes show up more or less. Thanks for all the info guys and girls.

I thought Taissa was lovely, she has the same grace Vera has

It's this person's business if they see it or not how about you respect that?

Taissa was fine. I liked her in American Horror Story as well.

I would tend to disagree. I've known of Taissa since AHS where she had a lot to learn, but I thought she was very good here. I actually felt she was the best thing about the film and would have liked to have seen what she could have done with a good script and a more focused story. I think she's going the right way and can only get better.

You could tell by the haunted House derivative storytelling that they hadn't a clue about, or even cared about more tellingly, trying to flesh out Valak beyond demon from hell.

But that's the Conjuring spin offs for you; good returns in exchange for minimum effort required. I thought this film was the perfect illustration of showing too much because they ruined what was the most intriguing part of TC2 with pure lack of effort compounded by dollops of cynicism

Yeah, I agree with most of you. Average movie. I just hope that my other most anticipated horror movie of the year (Suspiria) won't let me down as well...

Never seen AHS, can only judge her by this. Just thought she was really bland, flat, and uncharismatic.

I've seen her in better movies like The Final Girls... which is super underrated.
