Batman and Robin was not what audiences wanted at all. In fact Schumacher's whole campy approach was not what they wanted. WB just overreacted to the parental backlash of Batman Returns. Instead of just going back to the B'89 tone, they make a total cartoon out of the franchise. By the time B&R came along they were basically just trying to sell toys (which Schumacher himself admitted).
