First Avenger The Official Captain America Critic's Review Thread - Part 1

Funny (yet sad) how Rotten Tomatoes FRONT-LOADED all the Negative Reviews first, then proceeded to Tweet how #Rotten Captain America was at least 3 times this whole day.

WTF does that tweet mean?

Sigh...............I am :csad:

It seems Joe Johnston is cursed both critically and financially. After looking at the reviews, I am not too sure about it's legs. It really needs to over perform on opening weekend to have any chance of making good money domestically. 200 million is not going to happen now...

Marvel your doom and gloom approach is really really annoying.

So has RT quit giving updates or are the negatives starting to dry up?

Well if they have stopped providing updates it is probably only because they have nothing left negative to say since it is the positive.:yay:

Yeah there's really no way to predict how this is gonna turn out financially...critically it's lookin good, although it's annoying how rotten tomatoes decided to flaunt mostly negative reviews right out of the gate. Financially though, that's got me worried.

I am so glad that I am much more zen than some of you guys, LOL! Seriously, some of you guys need a chill pill. I want a Cap sequel as much as you guys do. But, the reviews are early yet, and we're fresh right now. Also, just go out this weekend, support Captain America with your time and wallets. That will help get it a sequel. So, while you contribute to the OW, enjoy the movie and worry about this crap later :)

I want this movie to do well that's why I am a nervous wreck. I just want this weekend to be over and project CA's total boxoffice domestically.

I understand but remember alooooooot of the people who go to see movies don't even know what a rotten tomato is. Rotten tomatoes doesn't even account for all the glowing reviews there have already been. And it's fresh :oldrazz:

I think everyone wants the movie to do well, but nothing to be nervous about. Check the front page of the thread and you will see there are way more positive reviews then negative ones. The only thing most people are angry about is the approach Rotten Tomatoes seems to be updating their site with for reviews. Captain America is going to be awesome, so don't wish this weekend over. Sit back and look forward to the movie.:yay:

Agreed!

I was also noticing that 4 of the 6 Top Critics had positive reviews. That is a 66.6% freshness rating for that group. :yay:

Top Critics 57% 4 Fresh 3 Rotten

Currently at 62%. Which usually translate to "good movie that would be rated higher if critics weren't walking into it expecting the next Casablanca."

Should be fine. I'm optimistic.

Seriously, I just searched for reviews and read through like five very positive ones and nothing's popping up on RT. They usually keep up a little better. Not suggesting anything but I'd like to see the RT scale be high on this one just for the satisfaction.

That is an interesting way of looking at it.

Anyone worried about a sequel... Avengers will be the one to determine that, not this movie.

I wish they would update more too, LOL! I'd like to get a general consensus.

I think Cap can earn a sequel before Avengers with strong BO. But, I think a Cap sequel is possible after Avengers if Cap doesn't make quite enough for Marvel to be overtly excited.

^Actually wouldn't this movie determine a sequel? I mean if people don't buy into him as a stand alone they won't do a sequel. Thor 2 was already announced before Avengers because people enjoyed the first movie. Unless somehow the Avengers is the Captain America show which I doubt.

I see EW posted their review. I was expecting a B or somesuch, but did they REALLY say Chris Evans should've infused his Johnny Storm-like wit INTO STEVE ROGERS?!

I... don't even know what to say about that except...

Top Critics 57% 4 Fresh 3 Rotten

Sorry, about that got my number by counting the number of Top Critics off the Main Cap page on RT. (which shows only 6 of the 7 Top Critic reviews), they are missing the Karina Longworth's review.

These are some of the weirdest and out right conflicting reviews I've seen for a superhero flick in a long time.

Yes, he won't be the "star" of Avengers, but he will still be one of the big 3 characters of that movie. That could easily convince Marvel to sequel Captain America. Being a major character in a much higher profile film will up his street cred, and a sequel would likely have more interest.

Honestly, though... isn't the Variety among the harsher TC reviews? If that's about as harsh as they're gonna get, then... whatever man. I can live with a couple of people calling it "bland". There's a buttload of others saying it wasn't.

I'll deal. :word:
