The Official ''Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald” Thread

- A coherent, focused, standalone story
- A seasoned screenwriter who can be a check against Rowling’s worse impulses (ie the new characters with excessive backstory who don’t have anything to do)
- A new director... Yates needs to go
- An acting coach for Depp

I'm agreed with you about Yates - I find his whole interpretation of the magic to be a bit boring. He's the one who gave us that ridiculous final duel in Deathly Hallows, after all. I'm agreed with your first point (did you look at my little synopsis for how I think the next FB movie should be?). I think another screenwriter to work with Jo would not be a bad idea at all. The only thing I can't agree about is Depp; I loved his acting! :funny:

It's not that Depp can't act, it's that he didn't try, and an acting coach isn't going to change that.

I don't get this at all.

One thing though, the costume designer promised us a really unique outfit for Grindelwald in the final scenes, and we didn't get that, at least I don't think so. But we know that there was a different ending filmed, so maybe it was there? I hope we see that on Blu-Ray.

Nope we didn't, he was dressed the same as he was the whole movie. Maybe he'll show up with it next movie.

Also, has anybody realized that the scene with Leta at that swan-dance party that we saw in the trailers - is this a spoiler? - wasn't in the movie? Along with a whole bunch of other stuff from the trailers - most notably, to my mind, the scene with
Nagini and Credence on that rooftop, with Credence releasing his Obscurus - and a brief clip in the last trailer that had Vinda Rosier clearly spying on somebody, which we didn't see in the film. Also, there was a shot in the first trailer that had Queenie doing a double-take in the Ministry of Magic, looking suspicious of someone or something - it wasn't in the film. There was a scene of Grindelwald (I think) entering the Lestrange mausoleum - it wasn't in the film. Tina in that dark hallway, Yusuf Kama looking up at the family tree on the sewer wall, Grindelwald and Queenie in the rose-garden - none of it showed up in the movie. There was so much stuff there: plus the Theseus & Newt scene in the pub that Redmayne mentioned. The film was probably ten times more fantastic with all that added material.

EDIT: I'm putting most of that in a spoiler tag.

It’s a shame JKR lobbied for him. I would’ve just recast Depp with a superior actor.

Just the fact that she lobbied for him is perplexing to me. Why would she give a ****?

These are good suggestions, it's whether or not Rowling and Heyman agrees to them is another matter entirely. I imagine Heyman would be more up for changes as he likely want to be in good favour with Warner Bros since he's got other projects. Rowling might be trickier, I certainly wouldn't want to be the exec that tells her that the studio wants changes.

There are plenty of articles on how many little scenes weren't in the movie, especially shots from the trailer. The actors have discussed cut material not seen there as well. From those that saw the test screening, apparently the material cutdown was actually mostly minimal, and mostly a lot of scenes cutdown or replaced with more coherent scenes.

We don't know, but the rumor was he is a long time crush. Usually you'd think, nah, but considering how JK has been acting post Potter, you just wonder. Was it really something as stupid as that?

Also, overall, this series just feels like a real downgrade in terms of the cast. They got Law and Farrell, who are pretty great. But we aren't talking the high level of actor they got for a lot of supporting and even minor roles in the first series. The main four are just... odd. I can't tell if it is the writing or a combination of the writing and the acting, but they are all super dull and nowhere near compelling enough to carry a bad movie.

Well Johnny used to be a heartthrob in the early 90s, it's no surprise that Rowling might have had a crush on him back in the day. It's kind of fitting though, both Deep and Grindelwald are (supposed to be) handsome and charming in their youth (to the point that Jude Law-Dumbledore felt in love with him) but now Grindelwald is a fanatic whose appearance rotten with Dark Magic or whatever and Deep looks like, well, what he looks like now.

I wish we could've just kept Colin as Grindelwald.

I think someone like Mark Strong could have been cool.
My preference would have been to keep Farrell. He was one of the few real presences in the first film, and just seemed to fit the role really well. But if they needed to do the switch for the purposes of the first story, someone like Strong would have definitely been my preference. I could totally see Strong doing the subtle seducer idea that they seemed to be going for with Depp, with a lot more charisma, sincerity and understated power.

And he wasn't exactly considered a bad actor, until he got lazy with Pirates. The problem, when it came time for his casting in Fantastic Beasts, his star was waning and, well, his personal problems coming out.

Depp was pretty fantastic until around the start of this decade. Probably isn't a coincidence that it coincided with his breaking up with the mother of his children.

I do think the idea was to get him as the "big star", though that did seem like a flawed idea by the time 2016 came around. But even still, once the personal and professional problems starting coming out, they should have clearly cut bait. Beyond JK and Yates bizarre defenses of Depp when it comes to Heard and her accusations, the talk of Depp being super unprofessional on set and looking near death, I don't know why they were so insistent on him. This film sure as hell didn't validate that need for it to be Depp and no one else.

I guess his hidden portrait can no longer hide the devastating effects of ageing and excessive drug and alcohol abuse.

I do wish that Colin remained Grindewald. He had quite the performance in the first movie, very layered and intense. Not that I hated Depp, thought he was rather good and interesting here, but I loved Colin in the first one. He now has the intensity Depp had 10 - 15 years ago.

If they lay out the criticism plus the dwindling box office numbers, they might be able to convince her.

I dunno, unless she can see the problems for herself, I feel like she’d be stubborn about it.
