Not sure how much I trust Carey with Gambit, he's been less than consistant in my book. :( He's more of a Rogue fan than of Gambit.

Gambit needs Nicieza to write him. No-one has ever written him better, imo.

I couldn't agree more. :D Those were the good ole days. Would be nice to see Gambit written like that again.

Just in case anyone is interested. Marvel vs Capcom 3 is at E3 and although Gambit hasn't been announced yet, most are sure he'll return.

Not heard of Marvel vs Capcom. It's a fighting game from those who give us Street Fighter. Here's a link to Gambit's ending from one of the previous ones. Looks like Gambit suffers some spousal abuse for eyeing up someone else.

I leave for a few weeks, and the thread goes all dead on me!

Picked up Hellbound-I liked it. I feel like our cajun is gettin' some respect these days. He is also featured in a freebie booklet I got from my comic store as a "main player" in the upcoming Heroic Age. The Gischler interview included had him talking a lot about Gambit as well. He seems to really like the guy (he currently resides in Lousiana, which helps). Fingers crossed!

Yeah, I'm hoping he gets used a bit more often. As for Gambit in other media, I'm not so sure he may get a spin-off movie, which he should get considering he stole the show in Wolverine. With them doing a reboot with X-men: First Class it looks like Wolverine is the only X movie staying with the same continuity.

Eh. All in all that's probably not a bad thing... FOX has absolutely decimated the X-Franchise on screen. A Gambit-centric movie through FOX would probably alienate more fans to the character than it would endear.

Gambit IS getting marketed pretty well right now for a character that isn't in the primary lineup of, well, anything. He's been showing up in preview art throughout the X-line, and he also go the nod for mutants in the whole "Who Will Be the Next Man Without Fear" thing.

For the first time in nearly a decade, it seems like the writers actually WANT to use Gambit. The problem is he's been pigeon holed by Carey's reinvention of the Death persona... and it could be another 6-12 months before Carey gets around to handling that, because he's so far up Rogue's behind.

I hadn't heard that. I knew that they were doing the whole 'who will be the next man without fear', but I hadn't heard much names. That would be cool, but I'd think it would be too much to hold out for that. Though who knows.

Eh right now it's all smoke and mirrors. Gambit, Falcon, Nova, Black Panther and Kraven the Hunter have all been teased so far. More could probably come... but it certainly seems like someone will (at least temporarily) soon be succeeding DD as the protector of Hell's Kitchen.

Honestly, none of those characters seem to fit the billing to me, so I feel like they're all red herrings for whoever Marvel really has planned.

While the general concept would intrigue me as a Gambit fan (Gambit ditching the X-Men to go off and repent by defending some quiet little corner away from the preposterous current X-Men storylines would be so perfect for the character it's not even funny)... it just doesn't fit here.

Marvel never keeps their classics out of costume for long anyway, so whoever takes over the DD role will get ousted before long anyway.

Well for all the previewing he got for the relaunched X-men title, he didn't even appear in the first issue at all. :( Previews and teasers mean nothing.

Here's that Man Without Fear promo:

They mean he's still in the minds of the writers and artists... which is a good thing. There was a long, long stretch there where we didn't see Gambit anywhere. And when the character did pop up, it'd be in an alternate universe where he died.

I think the tide's turning, hence my newfound patience. Still annoyed Carey's got him locked up (and buried under countless Rogue stories), but cautiously optimistic. Very excited for the Gambit/Storm team-up at the end of the month.

That's true. I am looking forward to that one shot myself. :D I hadn't realized it was so close until I went over my August checklist today when I picked up my books. I hope it's good.

Hey Gambit fans, he had a hell of an appearance at the end of Marvel Universe vs. Punisher #1 out this week!

At the end of the issue........

....his head was on a bloody stump

At least he and the X-Men didn't just get blown up this time (like the Punisher kills the Marvel Universe one-shot).

Gambit makes it into a lot of alt-verse one shots as a background character/corpse. My best guess is that its because he's a solid balance of recognizable but not so popular that people would be upset over him just getting a cameo.

Nope he's in with the other top Marvel characters Captain America, Daredevil, Cyclops, Ben Grimm and Sue Storm.

That's is what I was getting at-suddenly he seems to be popping everyone promotionally: first in I am an X Man, now in the Man without Fear, and two titles will be featuring him in the future (X Men and X Men: Legacy) plus X Men Forever-that is the most exposure he has gotten in the last ten years.

My theory is this is a side effect of the Disneyfication of Marvel. Disney execs see how popular he is and the earning potential he has (like Wolverine and Deadpool). Marvel may not use him much (due to Quesada's rumoured dislike of the character) but they are going to definitely put him out there and mostly likely Disney will gently nudge Marvel into using him more over the next couple of years. Though I hope he doesn't go all "Deadpool" at some point and appear in friggin everying!

Ahhh, I'm back home now so I won't be able to get the one-shot. I hope Squeeks will post some pages for me to see (hint, hint:cwink:) Storm and Gambit are my fave 2 X Men!

That won't be a problem. ;) Once it comes out of course.

Well Gambit pulled a Deadpool before Deadpool... When Gumbo first got hot in the early 90s he was everywhere - there was a solid stretch where the only mutant that was more popular than Gambit was Wolverine. That popularity has faded, obviously.

I'm excited to see how they address the Gambit/Storm dynamic... it's years upon years since they've really interacted in the books. And they were originally so close - had the Gambit/Rogue thing not taken off, the two characters likely would have been paired.

For a character that hardly gets any attention paid to him anymore, I'd argue that Gambit is still very popular.

By the way, what day does the Gambit/Storm team actually come out? Sorry.

Not sure the exact day. I can say for certain it isn't next week. :)

Gambit still ranks as second highest if not THE highest in use for fanfiction. His fanbase is still quite solid. :D

the storm/Gambit one shot comes out 25th August last time i checked

People say Gambit isn't popular these days, but it's just because he isn't AS popular as he was in the 90s(which was huge). Early 2000s he was just randomly stopped being used.

Also since the new every character can be in every book thing(no teams), the writers only are writing their fav characters Rogue/Cyclops/Emma etc, you can see that more in Uncanny with lifelong X-Men like Madison Jeffereies, Namor and Magneto.

Gambit is also used over many characters for promos and was also put in that MUA2 game over many X characters like Cyclops/collosus and Nightcrawler, and yet rarley appears in comics which i put down to the writers

rant over

Well there's no hiding that a lot of the current X-Writers are emotionally attached to characters that saw big arcs in the late 70s/early-mid 80s (sans Kyle & Yost, who just love whatever characters have claws and can stab).

Gambit's time will come when a crop of writers who grew up reading his stories winds up in power. It all works in cycles.

Yeah well, it's time for his cycle to come back around. :(
