well, good news for me is that due to a scheduling hiccup at work I'll be available to see this on Thursday night midnight showing after all(I originally wasn't expecting to as I'd normally be at work during that time). :awesome:

$300M? So what, did they spend 100-150M on marketing alone? Or did the production budget run over? Also, didn't they film in Louisiana? Does that $300M take into account the tax rebate they'll be getting? Because if it's a flat $300M then this NEEDS to be Iron Man level huge WW just to break even. And that's a long, long, long shot at this point.

Thought the 300 million cost was the total with the marketing? Thought the film by itself cost 175?

You're not wrong. The $300 million figure used in the IndieWire blog is to make and market the film. The indicated that in the first paragraph in the blog and they also cited back to the NY Times article that originally quoted that figure.

$150-160 million on production, the rest on marketing. Which is a pretty typical number for a movie like this, but still a lot of money all the same.

Thing is that there were articles and folks who claim to have worked on the vFx on this one that say that the production budget is closer to 200 million. I want to think that the marketing budget was more like $100 million.

Films like this don't typically spend that much on marketing. $50-75M maybe at best but not $100-150M. That's just irresponsible if true.

50 million on advertising is low for a big summer movie.

I'd guess the propduction was 200 mil and the marketing was 100 mil which would be high but reasonable.

People also need to remember that launching the GL brand is as important as the movie turning a profit. They want to sell toys, the cartoon, halloween costumes etc.

The marketing honestly feels at the same level as TDK to me.

There is a huge difference, TDK was one of the most anticipated films in the last 10 years, GL is being shoved down people's throats as if it were the most anticipated film of the last 10 years. Bad move coz it's a sign of desperation. The marketing for this film has been arse backwards.

Spending that much on marketing is ridiculous. They should not have spent that much money on a film that is likely only to make 50-70 mil opening weekend, and BB numbers best case scenario in total BO. Turning a budget on that monstrous a budget will be a chore.

This is especially true. Since WB completely owns the GL character, any money they see from this merchandising will factor into whether or not Green Lantern gets a second flight.

So how do we know it has a 300 million dollar budget? An indie movie website?

Or was it New York Times? I read Indiewire in a few different places.

my palms are sweaty thinking about ebert's reaction to this movie

hope he likes it

a lot of people will go to a movie just because of his review

Something tells me this is not going to get bad reviews. Just a lot of lukewarm ones that read negative coming off of FC and Thor.

The chemistry between Mags and Xavier was exciting. Not getting that from Sinestro or Hal. Probably comparing how Thor incorporated his fantasy/earth segments.

Production costs can fluctuate wildly, especially during filming and post-production. Plus, studios never really give the true cost of production -- just an official number.

For example: Fox says Avatar cost $237M with an additional $175M spent on marketing and distribution (which would be a $412M film in total). So technically, GL isn't quite as expensive as some other big-budget tentpoles.

I see GL has having middle-of-the-road reviews, and after having two superhero movies already premiered before GL, it could affect critics' review of the movie. I expect Capt. America to be under the same scrutiny once it is released.

Okay, so maybe WB is more confident in it than originally thought.

Spending a ton of money on marketing doesnt make it seem like they are desperate if anything they would cut their losses and slow down on marketing. As i stated b4 they are trying to get the name out there. Green Lantern is even less well known then iron man so they want the GA to know what it is. Most people wont even see all of the marketing us nerds have. We search for it so it looks like alot.
I am very curious to see what every1 has to say about it in their reviews.
I can already tell u it has me hooked in the fact we get a superhero movie that has a superhero saving the entire city / world wich we havent seen yet not to mention i dont think there is going to be any personal connection from hero to villain wich it seems all superhero movies need these days. I just want a hero doing whats right without some personal vendetta. Like did we really need spider-man to have some connection with every1? Sandman killing uncle ben? come on!

I suspect this will be the case as well.

I'd be really surprised if it was a turd, but I suspect it will be a harder sell to most critics.

If it is a turd, and god forbid, we won't be seeing much more of Renolds for a while.
