I love when people suggest Spielberg or Cameron for superhero franchises.

It will never, ever happen people.

They're above it, whether you want to admit it or not.

Hate to go of topic but wasn’t Cameron tied to Spiderman years ago? Or is that just one of those great Hollywood myths.

Oops. I didn't see it several pages back.

That last review sort of drops off there suddenly; like the writer accidentally hit "Enter" before he was finished.

Still, not looking good so far.

That was the first review posted several pages ago. The one where it was a question as to whether anyone who wrote it actually needed to see the movie(or merely see all the marketing material) to write such a review.

Yes, he was attached to write and direct Spider-Man before he eventually did Titanic.

And wasn't that the same script that had Peter and MJ doing the deed under the Brooklyn Bridge in a net made of webbing? Yeah, I'm glad Cameron never got his hands on Spider-Man if that was indicative of his vision of the character.

I honestly think some of these IMDB reviews are from people who've seen only the trailers for GL and are rating it badly. If you dislike a movie, be clear and specify why. That loufalce sounds like he hasn't seen the movie at all -- it's all vague and broad strokes.

That's the case with most reviews/comments on iMDb. I don't venture near that site until after a films release.

As I recall, it was also Cameron who came up with the organic web-shooters angle. A lot of his stuff was supposedly adopted into the script that Raimi ultimately got, due to legal issues or some such. I believe, anyway; this is all just stuff I remember reading about in the month's leading up to the eventual Spider-Man film's release.

A film that's all set-up and no pay-off

This line made me laugh. Reminds me of Geoff Johns' comics.

So from what i've read it seems the story is poorly told and the characterisation of Hal is unimpressive.

I agree 100%. XMFC was just slapped together at the last minute and it shows. That it didn't end up as a train wreck is a credit to Vaughn's talent, IMO(as well as McAvoy & Fassbender who carry the entire film themselves). But I'd still just say it's passably good and not much more than that. That's not to say that I think Thor or X2 are great movies by any means but they don't feel rushed in the same way. Vaughn's Kick-Ass was far superior an effort, IMO.

I think XMFC's serious tone is part of the reason why it's so well recieved, Thor's a superior film in my opinion as well (I'm not just saying that as a Thor fan).

Variety is also mixed:

An attempt to infuse an earnest piece of comicbook lore with an irreverent, tongue-in-cheek sensibility yields decidedly mixed results in "Green Lantern." Starring a ripped, wisecracking Ryan Reynolds as the greenest member of a mighty intergalactic league of superheroes, helmer Martin Campbell's visually lavish sci-fi adventure is a highly unstable alloy of the serious, the goofy and the downright derivative.

The opening of the Hollywood Reporter review is what I feared; the fatigue of the genre might be setting in with a lot of people.

This was bound to happen.

I knew it, I knew that the movie critics would have beef with the mythology of Green Lantern. I even called it months ago at some point.

Oh please, do we have to go over that type of crap again? I don't know where you got that assumption from just because of one friggin' movie review, ONE.

SAAD,

Yeah, I'm getting that impression as well. The mythology is too much for them, it seems.

Honestly I think WB did try to play it a bit too safe, considering the chances they're usually willing to take. GL did not turn out like I envisioned it would based on the source material. One of my greatest fears about this movie was that it wouldn't flop hard enough to warrant a quick reboot, and it wouldn't be successful enough for a sequel. The image of green lantern being a mediocre hero would be cemented in the public's mind, and he would fade away amongst the now handful of superhero films coming out every year.
