I agreed with u too. They should aim to be as good as the original Star Wars films, but that's incredibly unlikely. Also GL could be considered as good as Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith though is awesome and GL was nowhere near as good as that one
I don't know, man. I'd rather watch GL than EVER sit through Revenge of the Sith again. At least Reynolds has charisma, which is more than I can say for Hayden.

Uh, no. It's not awesome. It's a bad movie with a couple good (or maybe just watchable) parts. ROTS proves to me that SW fans are among the easiest to placate. Just give them lots of lasers flying all over the place and a couple half-decent sword fights and they'll ignore bad acting, bad writing, bad direction, cartoonish special effects that have octogenarians doing flips in the air, and reducing the greatest movie villain of all time being into an emo *****ebag whose motivations don't even make any f***ing sense. It's fine of you like the movie, but don't tell me I "know" that ROTS is awesome.
See, I don't think GL is that bad, just bland and mediocre. Its not the worst thing in the world, there's just not really anything special or memorable about it.
Whereas the Star Wars prequels are legitimately bad. Like groan-worthy in many places.
Even though I like GL, it doesn't compare to ROTS. The last half of ROTS is some of the best film I've ever seen, and not just in the fantasy genre. Watching Anakin mutilate Mace, kill children, choke the love of his life, and spend about 15 minutes trying to kill his master was simultaneously sublime and heartbreaking. I never get tired of ROTS.

I totally agree! That movie is compelling as hell, the battle on Mustafar is cinematic gold.
I really hope the GL movie steals a lot from Star Wars
Star Wars will always remain the best scifi series, but GL is DCs Star Wars. Hal is Anakin, Kyle is Luke. There are a ton more comparisons that can be made as well.
I am a huge GL fan, but even I can admit that the most we can ever hope for is a second rate Star Wars, which doesn't have to be a bad thing at all. It's just that Star Wars is so good you can't top it. GL done right can come close though
Sigh...That 2005-2014 gap in the Star Wars franchise really was the perfect time for a GL movie to fill the void. With SW back in full swing with a movie every year moving forward, I think GL has to really focus on what makes it special and not a second-rate SW, at least on the surface. Star Trek seems to have taken this into consideration as well, as the new movie seems to be moving closer to its lighthearted TOS roots (with a modern twist) and away from 'SW-lite', and Guardians obviously has enough of its unique flavor front and center to do great business moving forward.
If you ask me, the unique aspects of GLC that should be emphasized (at least for the first movie) are..
-GLs as space cops. SW's heroes are rebels or samurais, the GotG are criminals, and ST's leads are explorers/peace keepers. With GL, two partners patrolling their sector is unique both in the sci-fi and superhero space. The more police tropes the better, at least at the start of the movie before the mysterious emotional spectrum comes into play and it becomes more of a fantasty/sci-fi adventure movie.
-Constructs. If done right, constructs could make lightsabers seem like old news.
-Colorful and visually imaginative worlds. Whereas SW and GotG play with a lot of greys and browns or Earth-like worlds (sand, snow, swamp, etc), worlds like Zamaron in the hands of the right director will enchant audiences. Four Star Wars movies later, general audiences might be clamoring for something fresh and different visually. The movie would still need its fair share of mundane tactile 'realistic' settings to ground the movie (grey military barracks on Oa, dark city streets of Korguar, etc), but there should definitely be some worlds where everything is foreign, from the sky, to the oceans, to the grass, etc, and show these off in the trailers.
-Guy Gardner. An entertaining meathead character is rare in the sci-fi or superhero space. He'll definitely add a spark and turn heads. Meanwhile, John needs to be uptight and neat to the point of comedy and yet have an interesting internal conflict weaving through his story, not just a Sam Wilson / James Rhodes / John Diggle vaguely-characterized token military black guy #264. And of course, Hal Jordan needs to be that classic all-American hotshot pilot who was every kid's hero 20 years ago, an archetype we don't see anymore but one the franchise can effectively use to subvert the general audience's expectations when Hal tragically becomes Parallax. Not just generic young sarcastic white action movie lead #789.
Also, GL2011 was wayyyy worse than the prequels imo. The prequels had terrible writing, but they at least had some exciting inventive set-pieces (pod-racing, Coruscant chase, Obiwan vs Maul) and some great art direction and character designs. Sinestro aside, GL2011 had almost nothing cool on screen. Just imagine if we had similar scenes in GL: a chase scene on Oa, a duel to the death between two lanterns, a construct slicing someome in half, a GL tracking a bounty hunter, GLs in a seedy space bar, etc. GL2011 was just so lame, and yet somehow its budget was almost double that of each prequel film. It's mind-boggling.

I don't want to see them take many cues from SW to be honest. They should have their own unique take on DC's cosmic universe without making it reminiscent of something else. Also I wouldn't really compare Hal to Anakin. Hal was not created with the idea of becoming a bad guy, Emerald Twilight was a publicity stunt so DC could get rid off Hal and the GLC, and springboard Kyle as the new protagonist and only GL left.

Regardless of how he was created, it would just be something fresh and surprising (for a general audience who has no knowledge of the comics). Some might call it too dark, but if the movies are played like ensemble pieces, there'd be other lead characters who continue on the path of good.
I also think this is what they should do with Cyclops over in the X-Men movies. In the comics, the idea that Wolverine and Cyclops become the next Xavier and Magneto is so great imo, specifically because Cyclops isn't a character we were waiting for to go bad.
Well, turning Hal into a villain has always been a plot device and nothing more. Not to mention I'm just not a fan of fall from grace/redemption storylines. I want the GLC to be awesome and badass, not go after a possessed/corrupted Hal.
Fair enough. I'm thinking they won't entertain the idea because DC has spent a lot of time and means over the past decade to build Jordan back as this big hero. To go back to the Parallax crap and make him some huge cosmic villain again seems kind of counterproductive to me, but hey when a studio spends 200 million on a movie, they can do whatever they want I guess.

This is a fantastic post I agreed with literally everything
Also I don't get the resistance to Hal/Parallax, it's literally one of the most interesting story lines they can go with, I really hope they go that route, setting Hal up as Anakin and Kyle as Luke
Sinestro isn't Anakin, Hal is
Hal was the chosen one, the greatest Lantern of all, and he decimates the entire corps, just like Anakin and the Jedi. The comparison is strong
Then a New Hope in Luke/Kyle comes in and saves the day, helping to redeem Hal in the process
This has so much potential as a trilogy. It has more potential than other DCEU franchises like Aquaman or the Flash. GL can be one of WBs main franchises if they play their cards right

Those 3 SWs were steaming piles of poop for me. I struggled to get through them. I really hated them. I too would rather watch GL over them. And I've watched GL a handful times. Reynolds was good and I enjoyed the off world stuff. GL wasn't a good movie but it was the kind of bad movie that I could easily watch. Those 3 SW are unwatchable for me & I've only watched once and will never watch them again

Yep, nail on the head right here. GL is mediocre-to-bad and it hasn't aged well in just a few years but there are at least moments in it I find entertaining and the lead performance was decent. I have NOTHING good to say about the SW prequels--any of them. People who think ROTS was somehow waaaaaayyyyy better must have blocked out the scene where we learn that Padme is somehow "dying" even though there's nothing actually wrong with her or Darth Vader's "NooooOOOOOOooooooOOOOO" moment at the end. Those two scenes alone make me eager to see ROTS land on MST3K when it comes back. I want to see Joel and the Bots f***ing destroy that movie. At least they might make it watchable!
At least for me, the difference between the two is that in ROTS and the prequels in general the execution of what they set out to achieve is fine. Unfortunately, they broadly tackle stories and topics that do not interest it's target audience at all (The Darth Maul fight and the fight at Mustafar being exceptions). Add to that mediocre acting by key cast members and it becomes a 'bad' movie. But for people who don't mind the subject material, it becomes a good movie and thus you have people who actually do like the prequels.
In GL, they just messed EVERYTHING up. The script was non-existent (since confirmed by Reynolds) and what they did come up with was bad across the board. Plus, it was badly executed in the way Pan was a badly executed movie in addition to a poor script and you could tell that while watching the movie.
Lucas surely didn't have the studio meddle with his vision like WB did with GL. GL played like two different stories: Hal joining the Corps, the good arc,and Hal pursuing Carol, the bad arc. At least the SW prequels were more coherent.
