Westerns can feature dirt and grime and be violent with disgusting characters without being R-rated. A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good the Bad and the Ugly and The Outlaw Josey Wales feature dirt and grim and violence with disgusting characters and are not R-rated. Jonah Hex is in many ways similar to Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name from A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good the Bad and the Ugly and The Outlaw Josey Wales.

The majority of the real Jonah Hex source material (38 issues of Weird Western Tales from 1972 to 1977 and 94 issues of Jonah Hex from 1977 to 1985 and 54 issues of Jonah Hex from 2006 to 2010) were not R-rated material.

At the same time though, the latest comics are completely and utterly R-rated, hell some of it wouldnt get in an r-rated movie because its too extreme and the newer stories are great and would seem likely as inpiration for a movie.

The classic Jonah Hex stories by Micheal Fleisher are great and I recommend them. Michael Fleisher wrote one hundred and twenty five Jonah Hex stories. The movie was inspired by the classic Jonah Hex stories written by Micheal Fleisher, specifically the Quentin Turnbull issues. The movie features Quentin Turnbull as the villain, who first appeared in Weird Western Tales #22 (1974), written by Micheal Fleisher, and when the movies script was written in 2007, Quentin Turnbull hadn't appeared in a comic book since Jonah Hex #85 (1984), written by Micheal Fleisher.

John Malkovich explained "I play a plantation-owner called Quentin Turnbull, who holds Jonah Hex responsible for the death of his son in the Civil War – it's set right after the American Civil War, 1872, I think it's set in. It's Josh, Megan and Michael Fassbender, who's terrific. I love Josh Brolin – he's a friend of mine, and he said, 'Would you be interested?' And I like the guy, Jimmy Hayward, who's directing, so I said, 'Sure.'"

Quentin Turnbull being a plantation-owner holding Jonah Hex responsible for the death of his son in the Civil War is right out of those classic Jonah Hex comic books written by Micheal Fleisher. Michael Fleisher created Quentin Turnbull. Quentin Turnbull was a driving force in Jonah's life in those comic books. We see, in flashbacks, the death of Quentin Turnbull's son in Weird Western Tales #29 (1975), one of the best and most pivotal Jonah Hex stories. We also see in that issue that Jonah Hex and Quentin Turbull's son Jeb had given Quentin Turnbull the Eagle-topped cane in 1861.

Southerner Jonah joined the Civil War as a Confederate in 1863 but after killing a slave Jonah is remorseful and decides that he can't continue to kill slaves and Yankees that are fighting for men to be free, but he can't turn and fight against his Confederate comrades, either. Jonah surrenders to the Union solders at Fort Charlotte. Jonah's Confederate platoon is subsequently captured. The Confederate solders turn against Jonah thinking of him as traitor and call him a "sneaky, ******-lovin'...", and then many of them are killed during an attempted escape known as the Fort Charlotte Massacre. Jeb is shot and dies in Jonah's arms. Jonah later hunts down the captain and kills him in revenge. Jonah is accused by the surviving Confederate solders of being a traitor. Two weeks later when the news of Jeb's death and Jonah's betrayal reaches Quentin Turnbull, he swears vengeance upon Jonah for the death of his son. That's all in the flashback in Weird Western Tales #29 (1975). So Turnbull hires assassinations to kill Jonah Hex and the first confrontation is in 1872 in Weird Western Tales #22 (1974).

A casting call went out for JEB TURNBULL - son of 'Quentin Turnbull' (John Malkovich). 30 - 35. Skinny, southern accent. Needs one or two days for prosthetics for the additional filming that took place between January 18th and February 1st this year.

Jimmy Palmiotti, writer of the current Jonah Hex comic book series, told the Philadelphia Daily News about the additional filming that "I know for a fact that the shoots on Hex are additional story being added...not reshoots." And the reason they pushed up the release date of the film to June 18th is "because the studio saw the rough cut and loved it, so much so they pushed up the date and decided to put more money into the film."http://www.lonely.geek.nz/jonah_hex_film.html
In February Jimmy Palmiotti further explained that "they are doing some additional scenes which will help expand on the story and back story, a good thing, trust me."

The movie does sound pretty brutally violent. In the teaser that was shown at Comic-Con there's a scene of a guy asking what happened to Jonah Hex's face. Jonah says, "I cut myself shaving," shoves an axe in his head and says, "What happened to yours?"

While I know where you're coming from, I'll point out that the new stories go out under the DC main imprint and without a mature readers warning. And, in general, language and nudity isn't a problem in most issues. Violence is the issue.

Gatling guns on the horse?

:awesome:

That's a small sample but I'm liking the footage.

yea nice looking peak at the trailer, footage doesnt look bad at all.

Is this movie still opening opposite Toy Story 3? If so, why?

Counterprogramming, man. The geek world knows how cool the TS movies are, but the mainstream male demo just sees it as a kiddie cartoon.

if this new footge is not proof that this movie should be R then i dont know what to say anymore.

I know it was only 10 seconds, but I liked what I saw, and I know we cant judge movie on 10 seconds or even a trailer, but I am expecting the worst and hoping for the best.

I gotta say I enjoyed those ten seconds.

yea i hope the full trailer is cool. i hope its at least a 2min trailer.
