Your level and skills and whatnot don't carry over.
I'm going through the game for the 3rd/4th time (3rd as my first female character to get to level 60, and also the first time as a male). It's still a lot of fun, I'm surprised how many times I can do the same thing and still enjoy it. Mass Effect is a fantastic game.
They do, sort of. People who reached a level 60 receive some kind of skill bonus. They didn't say what exactly.
I think they were perhaps too generous with skill points in the original, for me it's became a less a case of choosing "what to level" and more a case of "what order" to level, pretty much every major skill is maxed or nearly maxed.
I'm still in the process of scanning Keepers, so I'm running everywhere for the time being. But I do have auto-save on and I save pretty often on my own (alternating between two save spots rather than just saving over the same spot all the time, no less), so I should be okay. You can bypass most of the elevators eventually when you unlock all the areas of the Citadel and just take the mass transport. Only place that never seemed to be able to travel to was C - Sec headquarters where you take the elevator to your ship.
Damn man you don't have auto save on? lol the only glitch that's ever f**ked me over is on the same level, when you're facing off against Benezia. When the Asari commandos use warp when you're on the stairs, your character model never goes back to normal. =/
