The Official Michael Shannon IS General Zod - Part 1

SR wasn't bad. The problem with it was pacing and Singer tried to make a romantic chick flick. If SR had been edited correctly, lose the kid story line and add the tsunami sequence it would have made more money.

My theory on the first film of a Superman movie is Singer and Donners formula of Krypton + Lex + natural disaster causes an alien prescence to come to earth. Meaning we could really see Superman do some kickass work to stop some natural disasters plus confront some terrorism from Intergang in the first film. While something in that first film leads to Brainiac and Metallo entering the picture in the sequel which would lead to doomsday or darkseid in the 3rd film.

Oh well more Zod.
'Lose the kid' and you lose half the movie. Not that it would make that much of a difference, but still....

Okay...stopping with the ill-placed SR talk now....:O

I'm just excited we have a title, a villain and a excellent cast all around so far

Shannon is a good actor so I think he will do good in the role and bring just enough to it.

Ha. Looks like Zod isn't happy with the casting...

LOL That is beyond awesome. I gladly kneel before him. :supes:

He shall crush the son of Jor-El for this!

michael shannon ? hmmm the name sounds familiar but i'm drawing a blank

edit, never mind, i remember him now, he's played kim fowley in the runaways :D

For those unfamiliar with Shannon's work here's a clip from Revolutionary Road which gives some great insight into his brilliant acting.

I'm interested to see how all these reboots of superhero franchises are going to confuse general audiences. First, Spiderman is getting a reboot with a brand new cast, a rehash of the origin, and Gwen Stacy filling in for Mary Jane.... and now Superman got Superman Returns, which was basically a homage to the first Donner Superman movie... and now Man of Steel is using the same villain (General Zod) from the second original Superman movie with Christopher Reeves (Superman II) except the kid-of-superman, introduced in Superman Returns, is going to be totally (and thankfully) forgotten about.

and then we have X-Men First Class...

geeze...

None of this is bad, but I can imagine general audiences getting confused.

I like the casting of Michael Shannon. He's great!

I might be in the minority here, but I hope Lex Luthor is still in this film and they finally give him the best interpretation, which to me, is the billionaire entrepreneur....and President hopeful.

Not even so much getting confused, just becoming indifferent. At some point, your gonna get diminishing returns. I'm super confident that won't happen with MOS if the action is on par, which it should be. But Spiderman & First Class......

Great show and he is amazing in it.

It is a very good show. Shannon is excellent...but based on that an Rev. Road...there's something very 'Chicago' about him. I could see him as a zealous war general, though...in a menacingly reserved/understated way. His delivery is kinda' like someone who is exploding inside, but is doing everything he can to keep it under control....but one little thing could set him off and make him go postal.

Parasite and Metallo COULD be amped to be badass, but they STILL wouldn't be a huge threat to Superman. these 2 villains are powerful, yes but they aren't as emotionally vested as Zod is. you can't delve into Kryptonian mythos or get a real emotional response from Superman if they use Parasite or Metallo the way you possibly can if they use Zod.

besides, who's to say that Metallo or Parasite WON'T make an appearance in this film as a lower tier villain similar to how they were in Secret Origin?

Simple Lex Luthor provides the intellectual threat, while Parasite or Metallo provides the physical threat, that's what they did in Superman: secret Origins. That makes more sense for the first movie then using Zod.

I am pleased with the casting. But, I have a feeling that we haven't heard the last of it...

While Shannon is a great actor- I feel that they are and still will, get a "name" actor for a villain role. Be it for Lex Luthor, Metallo, Brainiac, etc... I think we are definitely going to get a Lex Luthor in this film (my gut tells me it will be Daniel Day Lewis, call it fanboy dreams, I say intuition) and I still think that they are going to have something else in store for us, villainwise. Zod is a huge threat, but I think they may be building a larger Kryptonian mythology/legacy and we may see another villain in this flick...

Zod to me is a good choice for the first movie. We actually have a villain who in this case has an advantage over Superman.

Sure they both will have similar strength and skill set, but Zod has the experience. If this is indeed an origin story, then Superman is fresh and new. Zod has fought and won wars, led armies, etc etc.

To compare it to say a basketball player, right now Superman just has the size, strength and the look but knows little about playing in the pros; Zod has championship rings.

Combine that with the history and Kryptonian ties aspect and I think you have yourself a nice setup for a very interesting challenge for the newly emerged Man of Steel.

*this is all of course assuming he's the main villain

Hopefully Brainiac.

I know they can create a rich origin story with Zod, Jor-El, the Science Council and Brainiac.

I really hope you're right Robin.

Yep...someone's going to have to rule Australia, after all.

Looks like Mirko is playing with the matrix and changed the title to Man of Steel, I wondered why it was not loading for a few minutes ;)

I think for the other bad guys to carry a film, they need to be less END OF THE WORLD type situations. I think a bad guys like Parasite or Mettallo acting like they have nothing left to lose and making them sympathetic in a way speaks louder then trying to rule the planet.

Oh man. The more Kryptonian mythology the happier I will get! I love it when Superman packs in the sci-fi outer-spacey stories.

That's how I'd do it, lol.

Set up the background of the Kryptonian Civil War.

General Zod's forces against the Kryptonian High Council (including Jor-El). Brainiac corrupted in the process, betraying the High Council that created him and teaming with Zod (but still with his own agenda). Maybe in a huge twist, Jor-El and other scientists created a...um..."Doomsday" Weapon to stop Zod and end the war, but were unable to ever use it as Krypton was destroyed. Brainiac disappeared, as did the doomsday weapon, and Zod was in the Phantom Zone.

Maybe they should have Superman lose his powers somehow...then it would further emphasize the importance of a someone with such power actually being good, with Zod being around. That way, when Supes gets his powers back, it'll be like "Bring it ONNN!!", and.....

....oh wait....

To me, that sounds absolutely perfect! Might be a neat edge of seat intro for the film. Especially if would to allow glimpses of Brainiac and....."Doomsday." Great way to set up future installments IMO.

For those hoping for DDL as Luthor: You are aware that he begins shooting Lincoln this fall (the same time as MoS), right?

I think it would add a great level of irony to have the only thing that can kill Superman and his eventual greatest challenge to have been created by his own father.

Also, I'd rather Jor-El send Kal-El off not in an attempt to simply save his son, but rather as a contingency plan to eventually fight the forces that caused the demise of the planet Krypton (Zod and Brainiac). There could be a plan to have sent more, but Kal-El was the only one that made it safely....

I always found the idea of Jor-El being the ONLY one to save his son out of an ENTIRE planet a bit implausible. I'd also like Krypton to feel more like an entire planet than a single city. If Jor-El somehow had a small following who believed him that the planet was doomed and they all sent their children to colonize earth and eventually repopulate and save their race it would be a neat twist....think of the escape scene- seeing each pod taken out by heat, flame and meteorites as Kal-El is truly the only survivor! Great opening sequence right there....

There are plenty of ways to tweak the mythology while still remaining true to the principle ideas, but keeping it fresh so that the audience will be guessing, even with a villain we've seen before- we can and MUST be offered a new take on those mythos to make it seem....exciting.
