No colorful outfits. They'd look stupid. The leather is fine. Colorful piping is all we need. Put Wolverine in yellow spandex and a mask, and it'll be ridiculous. Color is fine in a comic, but not on real people. On real people, they look like they belong in Disneyland.
If you want color, and odes to the comics, do it with their civilian outfits. I've got Rogue in her classic bomber jacket in one scene, and layering yellow and green in another as an ode to her classic costume. Gambit wears his overcoat every time he's in civilian attire (he wears a black leather overcoat like Cyclops wore in X2 when he's in uniform).
