Didn't this happen in the late 2000's after the housing crisis and the Wii became the dominant console?

Nah the Wii dominated because of the broad appeal it had for audiences beyond gamers. Video games as a whole were pretty recession proof during that time frame.

That was more of a soft reset and it didn't have the impact a hard reset would like when everything crashed and burned the first time. Nintendo rose from those ashes to bring about a new era but that era needs to make way for the next one.

Everything has become too complacent, too repetitive and too reluctant to expand. With Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony and to a lesser extent, Steam, things have stagnated for too long.

I don't see how the current situation is anything but a crash. Studios are closing at a brisk pace.

Today's situation is nothing like the crash in the 80's (not yet at least). Back then you had a market dominated by American companies in terms of hardware (Atari, Mattel and Coleco). After the crash the market was completely reshaped when Nintendo released NES and Japanese companies in general became the dominating factor for some time. If Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all would withdraw from making hardware today it might be considered a crash similar to what happened 40 years ago.

I don't mean it's going to be the same cause, just we need a hard reset. This generation has been underwhelming, they have repeatedly slipped release dates, development times are ridiculous. Prices keep going up beyond inflation and tariffs. Look at the number of unions forming because the working conditions are so bad.
