GRAPHICS

The world of Okami is brought to life by a vibrant cel-shading technique which utilizes thick outlines and watercolor-esque highlights to emulate traditional sumi-e japanese art (if it had color).

(An example of Sumi-E art)

The result is pretty stunning, to say the least. Take a look at some screenshots:

Feel free to browse some of the videos for the game at this link. Really, seeing it in motion is another thing entirely. Truly amazing.

GAMEPLAY

The primary twist on gameplay elements is the "Celestial Brush", which allows you to pause the game at any time and paint onto the screen. This allows you to do everything from participate in combat to solve puzzles to paint a sun in the sky.

(The Celestial Brush Screen)

The video link above also has some great examples of this in action. Alongside this is some solid action adventure gameplay - expansive dungeons, a neat combat system which utilizes several different classes of weaponry (Such as Reflectors, Rosaries and Graives). All of this combined creates a package described sort of like Zelda, but with a unique style and twist that makes it distinctly its own.

Will it be PS2's last true masterpiece? Or an overhyped internet game? Whatever you think the answer, one thing is clear: so far, people love this ****. And I can't wait.

Oh, and some rules real quick -

1.) MAKE SURE TO MARK SPOILERS WITH SPOILER TAGS

Special thanks to Gaf and Amirox, OP can be found here

I will be picking the game up this week (Okami, God hand,Final Fantasy XII, Killzone Liberation... bye life! :() I am legitimately looking forward to playing this, and if you don't want to get AIDS you'll be playing this game (and posting in this thread), y'hear?

Thank God they dumped the realistic visual style.

No excuse for you!

I don't think they could do the game justice on the DS, a Revolution port would make more sense considering you could use the pointer to draw and they wouldn't have to majorily downport it. They'd probably have to make a totally new side game if they were to attempt an Okami game on the DS, it would make a DS explode.

That being said, the chances of it being ported are very slim.

I'll be picking my copy up tommorow.

Pick me up a copy too.

Zenien, the supposedly "easy" combat is turning me off.
Is there a "hard" option? (Thaht's what she said!)

I'm not sure, I'll check for myself when I start the game tonight.

EXPLODING IMPLOSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone else started playing it yet?

I got the the point where

I fooled Susano (the decendant of the Swordman who defeated Orichi) into thinking he managed to break the giant rock that was blocking passage out of town... and he's decided to charge out into the wilderness to go slay more monster...

I think I just condemed a man to his death.

:csad:

The only playtime I've ever had with it has been on a friends machine, which means I only get a few minutes in inbetween each "alright give me the controller", but I can at least say that it's extremely pretty. The gameplay isn't a "93%" by any stretch from what I've played, but the visuals are an achievement, especially considering the hardware.

I basically blew every buck I had into getting both Okami and Valkyrie Prolife 2 at the same time but of the two, Okami's taking up a lot of my time because of how fun it is. I've basically cleared the Orochi quest and the Evil Mist quest. Now on the Water Dragon quest. A question:

Any online guides yet? Cause I'm having trouble finding certain items. Also, there are some statues located which look like Amaterasu, usually at places where I'm supposed to pull off some kind of high jump or something. Stuck at one such place. Need help!

How far are people at? Remmeber spoiler tags! Any updated impressions?

Spoiler tag:

On the last leg of the Nine Tails Quest in Oni Island. For those of you who think the game's been easy so far, the action picks up here. The fights are tougher and its harder to get Demon Fangs (which you should try getting. I'm doing my best to top 200 fangs for trade) and the puzzles, though not mind-boggling, are frustrating enough for me to consider throwing the controller at my screen.

Be sure to try getting the Golden Ink Stone/Pot/whatever from the King of Sei-An (after the Evil Mist quest) when you have a hundred DFs. This item allows for quicker Ink recharge time, quite necessary to pull off some nice finishers or use powers. Also, if you've got about 10000 yen to your name, a trip to the dojo wouldn't hurt. Study the Golden Fury "God"Technique. I'm not gonna spoil it for you, its a pretty sweet move plus it assures you a Demon Fang.

On the last note I'm stuck at the point before the Boss fight at a Blockhead. This is the only part of the game where I really hate. Instead of the first blockhead where you only need to remember and pick off two spots, this Blockhead has 5, count 'em, 5 spots to memorise and hit EXACTLY. Unfortunately I don't have the most sensitive controller in the world and the fact that Blockhead doesn't really have many notable reference points means I'm be stuck here for awhile.
