haha exactly. thing is I really wanted to see this the first weekend it came out. :p

I'm usually the same way, but when I saw POTC 3 on opening weekend I had a horrible experience, so I think waiting a week or two is a good thing...at least for me...I end up enjoying the movie more. I still plan on seeing POTC 3 again, maybe on the weekend. But for all these big films I might wait a week and then see it.

Ted Elliot & Terry Russio Speak about Pirates 3 and possibility of 4

Thanks to Ginger Stanley, I was able to get into the screening last night in West Hollywood, about am mile from Johnny Depp's home on Sunset Blvd. It was put together by the people of Creative Screenwriting. It included the screening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," followed by a Q&A with the writers, Ted Elliot & Terry Russio. The entire theater was filled with an enthusiastic audience.

Questions were asked about the writing process, and Terry expounded on how usually the entire script is written, then daily the writer is asked to rewrite scenes. He said with P2 and P3, they wrote the entire story, scene by scene, but not the actual event of every scene i.e., dialogue. He said they knew from the time they started writing on the two movies that Will Turner would end up at the end with his new "job," but they didn't know how they would get there.
They said if you watch all three films, you will see that one of the main questions is, 'Is Jack good or bad?' They said that in the first film, he only helped Will and Elizabeth out because it fell into line with his own plans. It's not until the crucial decision on the decks of the Flying Dutchman when Jack has to choose between immortality for himself, or for Will, that we see the answer.

They also talked about a line of dialogue that was cut from the film, but it was one of their favorite. When Will and Jack are on the Black Pearl discussing why Will feels he must save his father, even though he knows it means he's getting further from Elizabeth. Will says, "I have to. I can't turn my back on him." Then Jack replies, "Can't" is a matter of fact. You can if you want, but you won't -- and that makes it a choice."

That of course echoes back to the conversation Jack had while Will dangled off the Pearl in "Curse of the Black Pearl," about what a man can and cannot do.

One of the attendies (Michelle) asked when the audience was allowed to participate, what mark did Jack leave on Beckett. Ted and Terry gave no direct answer, but joked that it was a hickie. Then Terry referred to the Jack Nicholson movie, "Chinatown," how when asked a similar question, the answer was simply, "Chinatown."

The two said they were going to work on a script for Pirates 4- though there has been nothing signed.

one thing i missed in the third movie was jack making a funny face with his tongue, like he did in the first when he first met cotton and in second when bootstrap ate that snail on the black pearl when he told jack that davy jones is coming for him.
just i minor complaint on a AWEsome move
i'll probably be seeing it for the third time somewhere next week.

Can someone explain the "9 pieces of 8"? I still don't get the reason its called that.

China censors "Pirates" for "vilifying Chinese"

China has censored part of the latest installment of hit Hollywood movie "Pirates of the Caribbean" for "vilifying and defacing the Chinese," the official Xinhua news agency said on Friday.

The role of Hong Kong star Chow Yun-Fat, who plays pirate lord Captain Sao Feng, had been slashed in half to just about 10 minutes of screen time, the report said.

It cited local magazine The Popular Cinema as saying: "The captain played by Chow is bald, his face heavily scarred. He also has a long beard and long nails, whose image is still in line with Hollywood's old tradition of demonizing the Chinese."

"Chinese censors also cut Chow's line in which he states 'Welcome to Singapore' because it hints Singapore is a land of pirates ...," Xinhua added.

It quoted Zhang Pimin, deputy head of the film bureau of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, as saying the cuts had been made "according to the country's relevant regulations on film censorship" and "China's actual conditions."

The cuts "will not impair either the continuity of plot or the image of characters," said Zhang, declining to provide more details.

Still, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," has already performed well at the Chinese box office, Xinhua added, earning 1.18 million yuan ($154,800) on its first day in Shanghai alone.

This is not the first time a Hollywood film has angered the Chinese censor.

Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning "The Departed" ran into trouble due to its mention of a Chinese plan to buy military equipment, government sources told Reuters earlier this year.

But censorship on the big screen has little impact in China, where pirated, uncut versions of the latest movies can easily be bought on the street for around $1.

I watched it again to resolve the question of the heart. So it was really the crew, specifically Will's father, who cut out his heart and put it in the chest. However, I don't believe that's really part of the bargain with the Flying Dutchman. The crew must have decided that's how it would be proven.

In the case of Davy Jones, I think he did that to himself after being stood up in the 1st ten years of his service. When Calypso failed to be where they would meet he turned on her and his duty to ferry souls who died at sea. He then betrayed her more by telling the Brethren Court how to trap her in a human shape. He cut his heart with the intent of banishing his feelings for her, and to protect himself from mortal harm.

However, nothing was said on how Will can quit the Flying Dutchman and return to a normal life. It appears he'll sail on forever until someone dispatches his heart, and then he'll just die.
That's what I thought at first, ad then I heard something about "if his love's there after ten years, he is released" and thought I missed something. Bummer for Will. Nice to see Murtaugh and Mulroy again--they were sorely missed in DMC.

Can someone explain the "9 pieces of 8"? I still don't get the reason its called that.

there are 9 pirate lords and each of them had an valuable piece. originally, like said during the pirate lord meeting, they were supposed to have coins. coins that have 8 angles (like the one the kid who starts the song drops when he is hanged). so 8 is another word for coin
thus 9 pieces of 8 means 9 coins
