Review: Pirates 3
PLOT: In the continuing saga of Jack Sparrow who last we saw, fell to the clutches of the Cracken, and is taken body and soul to Davy Jones Locker. Feeling more than a little guilty, Elizabeth Swann joins forces with Barbossa to rescue Jack and return in time to unite with the Pirate Lords to battle the evil forces of Davy Jones and the East India Trading Company lead by Cutler Beckett. .

REVIEW: Why do critics generally seem to tear down the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise? Of course they are not perfect films, few are. But what is it audiences see that critics don’t? Credit Johnny Depp for creating one of the most endearing characters ever to grace the screen as Jack Sparrow. Credit some wonderful chemistry from Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. And credit the magnificent score by Hans Zimmer, some eye-popping direction by Gore Verbinski and a mass of talented character actors having a blast. And don’t forget what may be the best visual effects in the series, from an angry Calypso to an imaginative and fierce battle at sea. With that, you get the final (for now) installment of one of the most popular franchise ever to invade the screen, critics be damned. And with At World’s End, the best of the series, you will find a darker, more complex, action-packed adventure that will please most of the fans by bringing the best of the earlier installments for a thrillingly death-defying journey to the end of the world.

With that in mind, I don’t think the majority of critics are going to find the love for Pirates but audiences don’t seem to care. And why should they? Johnny Depp is back, and trust me when I say that they really don’t want people complaining there’s not enough Johnny. In an “Army of Darkness/Evil Dead” inspired moment, the different personalities of Jack Sparrow haunt the anti-hero as he finds himself surrounded by crabs and a very odd crew… Johnny is everywhere. A funny moment that sadly gets stretched a bit too long but hey… who’s really gonna complain. And did I mention that this film is dark… in one of the most spectacular and haunting moments in the film, the souls of the dead that Swann, Will Turner and company pass on their way to Davy Jones Locker, linger beneath the ocean black. This creepy moment is sure to creep out the kiddies. And the most surprisingly bleak image comes early on when all those associated with pirates are lead to their death. A powerful and surprisingly touching moment as those doomed to die face their fate with song.

Don’t get me wrong, the humor is here too. And when I say funny, I’m talking about Jack of course… the monkey. The primate has a bigger part and steals almost every scene. Other welcome additions were Chow Yun-Fat and expanded roles for the exciting Naomie Harris and the return of Geoffrey Rush who gives Jack Sparrow a little competition in the humor department. And you’ve heard the rumors, Keith Richards is here as Captain Teague, Captain Jack’s pappy. And once he arrives, At World’s End really takes off and proves to be the most entertaining of the franchise. His moments with Jack are pure gold while he is on-screen. He is given just enough without becoming an in-joke.

Of course there are moments that don’t quite work including an overly complex plotline which drags at times. And you may be trying to figure out just who is backstabbing who which gets a little tedious. But it still moves along quickly enough, for the most part, to make you forget that it is almost a three-hour film. And if you don’t want to sit through the credits, make sure you take a potty break or grab some snacks because, of course, you may want to glimpse the final, after-credit moment which I won’t give away. Avast me hearties, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End is sure to shiver yer timbers and and make yer roger jolly.

My rating 8/10 -- JimmyO

Depp Avoids Spidey Flip Flop

Maybe this is why Johnny Depp remains the American public's favorite movie star: he has no scorn for the character they love the most.

By Dennis Michael, FilmStew.com

A few months ago, as the Spider-Man 3 promotional campaign was circling the globe, star Tobey Maguire stated that he had no interest in a fourth film. Then, just a few weeks later, as Sony announced its intention for at least three more franchise installments, the actor started backtracking.

Now one could argue that Maguire was somehow misquoted, with simple ambivalence transcribed into outright denial. But there is no such confusion with Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp. "I feel there is a lot more territory to explore with Captain Jack," he tells London's Daily Telegraph. "I've never really felt I'm done with playing the character, so why shouldn't we try a fourth and a fifth?"

The great irony here is that in separate comments, Depp has explained that his five-year-old son – currently in full-on superhero worship mode – these days has eyes only for Spider-Man. Meanwhile, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has offered that he is open to more Pirates films, provided the third one does well enough at the box office.

I want more only if Verbinski, Elliot & Rossio return. Without them it's pointless.

Personally, critics can go to hell for all I care.

They hated SM3, SM3 was awesome.

They gave just as little to POTC1, and COTBP was freakin' awesome!

So, blockbusters I've come to learn to really ignore them- but, other films they know somewhat what they're talking about.

As I said before, as long as its above DMC- that's a good thing, and maybe they'll put it around COTBP.

SM3, the reviews were mixed but more often good than bad.

Pirates 1 were recieved very well last time I checked RT.

I could go into that but I wont...

It is, in my opinion at least. (But you liked SM3, so our opinions may differ in this matter as well.)

I haven't seen it and will do so with an open mind some point this weekend (though unfortunately not on Thursday or Friday).

But I will point out that critics are not just bashing (well not all) for the sake of it. I think Peter Travers for Rolling Stone is a very good critic and he is not one to attack a movie for being a tentpole. Read his review for Spider-Man 3 for proof. He also spoke very favorably of POTC1. In fact that's what got me to see that movie. When it was released nearly 4/5 of critics LOVED IT. I thought "Oh a movie based on a theme park ride, PASS!" But my local paper gave it four stars and everyone just was going on and on about it.

I saw it. I was amazed at how much fun it was. It was the first movie since Jurassic Park (IMO) to offer such a fun popcorn flick feel and joy to be in the cinemas at summer. Johnny Depp was nominated for an Oscar for best picture for that movie and he won the Screen Actor Guild's award for that performance.

So don't say critics have always been ragging on or detracting from the franchise.

I think they were on the money when they called DMC a vapid, slow unengaging movie that had no point for the first 2 hours of its 2 1/2 hours other than the few scenes of Will and his father.

But hey I don't always agree with critics so I won't let them make up my mind. But POTC1 was adored by critics. So don't pretend that they dislike the franchise.

I'm seeing the movie on Friday, but I was just wondering, is the Sparrow/Jones fight classic or just a 5 minute battle? Can someone else tell me the other swordfights in the movie?

Well, just got back from my local theater. Add $54 to the AWE gross jackpot.

$54 for just 6 tickets. I forgot to bring my college ID with me, so I couldn't get the college student discount. :csad:

Has anyone seen IGN's review of the game, it's looking about as critically successful as the movie.

But POTC1 was adored by critics. So don't pretend that they dislike the franchise.

Net-critics, yes... cream of the crop, definitely not. It's 65%. Personally, I don't think that's 'adoring' something- that's saying it's "just abover average" at best. :cwink: My local paper gave Shrek 3, 3/4 stars- but, that doesn't mean all critics adored it. Lol. :oldrazz:

That's why I said if we end up just above DMC or in the mid to high 60s- all is still good.

People were expecting different?

Don't know if you meant that in a bad way or the same way I put it.

Personally not surprised, because to me at least- it never even seemed that the critics liked any of the films. Just knew that DMC was not as good as the first. So, we're operating at level where critics say the top the franchise has reached is 65%- were people expecting 70s, 80s, and even 90s???

I am puttin my 2 cents in as to why the reviews have been mixed so far (and 7 reviews is far from enough to come to terms that AWE will only be a 43) and again I am biased to the fact that I love these movies, I am beyond carring about it, but I think this is a fair estimate none the less

Curse got a 79 (65 from cream of the crop) nothing to spectacular, but it was a novelty movie at the time, a good Pirates movie in 2003 was made once every 40 years, it was novelty, it was fresh, and gave us instantly one of the most memorable film characters ever (say what you will I belive rolling stone actually raited Sparrow as like the 72 best movie character ever, or something like that some poll like that), but most critics also noted the length of the movie (roger ebert stating "it comes into your home and stays just a bit to long") and some plot convulsions (shades to come), but none the less a fresh movie...DMC comes along, and everything that critics liked about Curse, (they say, I disagree, but I am also not a critic) stayed the same (i.e. didn't improve) and the stuff they didn't like, like the plot confusions, and length got worse, and on top of that it is 1/2 of a movie...Now it is AWE third time around, I assume Sparrow does the same shtick that we know and love, but critics are getting bored, the plot is probably even more confusing, and the movie is 20 minutes longer...

bad critics imo rarely grad a movie for what it is, like if a horror movie is scary, but a peice of crap acting and story they will still downgrade it for things that it (the movie) doesn't care nor go for.

good critics are capable of getting off their high horse from time to time and grading a movie based on what was accomplished, in Pirates case entertaining....the only thing that scares me is Peter Traveres of Rolling Stone is generally one of the few critics I really like (gave DMC 3 stars) and didn't like AWE...but again we are less than 12 reviews in, I expect it to get a bit better like Tempest says if it gets better scores than DMC that is probably the best

In the end, if you like the movie it should be irrevelant what critics say about it. I mean if you only care what the critics think in order to validate your interest?

But I have to agree with DaCrowe, I higly doubt it's "to be hip" or "for the sake of it" either.

Uh huh. That's what I said about Spider-Man 3 when it's rating was in the mid 80's. Almost all the time, as more reviews come in, the rating gets lower.

As much as I love SM3, it was great- but not as great as 2.

People had a reasonable reaction to the lowering of ratings- the highest a Spider-Man film got was mid 90s. That's ALOT higher a point to go down from than a highest being mid 60s.:cwink:

I can't wait to see this movie and do you guys know if you can replay any level you have beat or do you have to beat the game first?

Yeah, I want to know that too- go back and get anything I missed... it would really suck if I couldn't.

I just want to replay the ship fight were you have to be Will and get the key I love that level

just saw the movie and i have to say that i am just blown away. this movie rocks. the story is great, special effects are awesome, action is great and depp rules. deffinitely gonna see the movie a few more times.

Yeah, personally my favorite thus far is the whole wheel fight- that was fcking awesome, fight after fight after fight!

I also liked how they worked in a fight sequence early on in the game relative to Jack and Wills first fight in POTC1.
