I think we will see more of this graphical jump when Ps6 is released which is around 2028. But I think the big PS5 games by 2026 to 2028, should look much so much better than the games that came out in 2018 (Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Spider-Man, Resident Evil 2).

I don't have a ps5 yet. But the games that came out in ps4 from 2020/2021 (Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 3, Guardians of the GalaXy, Miles Morales) - based from my eyes, all look leveled up (graphics wise) when I played them, compare to early ps4 games. So hopefully that will be the same for the late PS5 games in 3 to 5 years.

But we are almost into the fourth year of this generation. I can understand the first two years being cross gen and transitional, but three years in? That should be enough time to feel like the generation has at least started on big graphical jumps.

I also understand that games are increasingly expensive to develop, but no doubt that Insomniac had a great big budget for their game. I'm sure that with big graphical jumps, Spider-Man 2 isn't the best the Ps5 has to offer, but in the previous generation, we had a game like Infamous Second Son which immediately showed off what the Ps4 was capable of.

Ps5, not so much. Sony is expecting to sell 25 million consoles and I'm sure they'll reach their goal and then some but so far it doesn't feel like a leap in technology in anything besides numbers.
Covid and games taking longer to get made have impacted too. Horizon was a decent looking game. I'm with you though, I want actual jumps that give us some wow factor and excitement for developing technology.

Hopefully Sony's future big games will push the limits of the PS5. Spider-Man 2 from the looks of it (well I don't think YouTube videos are accurate, as I'm sure the graphiX look better with the ps5), but imo it doesn't look graphically leveled up that much compare to Spider-Man 2018, despite the 5 year difference. I also noticed that with MK11 to MK1, RE2R to RE4R, God of War 2018 to Ragnarök. Forbidden West though looked much better than Zero Dawn. Zero Dawn still looks good and was ahead of its time. But visually, the first game really feels it was for the ps4 and the second one is for the PS5. Though I will have to witness all of these games for myself when I finally bought these games for the ps5, to get a better look. But so far based from the videos, we have yet to see a massive jump when it comes to the graphiX. Right now, you will really have to watch a comparison montage to see the difference, but a lot of ps4 ports of ps5 games still look mostly the same, based from the ones I watched.

Grand Theft Auto VI though would be such a revelation, especially the last game is already 10 years old, so its a no brainer that it should look ten times better.

Agreed, many of those games looked similar to their predecessors but Horizon took a step up. I don’t think we’ll get anything too eye-popping till late in this gen though.

eXcited for the neXt Naughty Dog's single-player game. Uncharted was my 1st PS4 game, so those graphiX blew my mind.

I’m a big fan of ND and Uncharted is one of my overall favourite series. Not sure if they are going back to it anytime soon (maybe after TLOU3 and/or a new IP) but that would be huge news for me. Factions has just wasted a huge amount of their time unfortunately.

I think it would have remained competitive pricing for the new gen console if Xbox were still around. Now that they have a large sector of gaming pretty much to themselves, and especially in Europe, I think we’re going to see much crazier pricing than we’ve seen before. People who don’t buy on day 1 will for the most part still be playing on PS5s or 4s (ie Sony don’t care too much unless you actually abandon PS and stop making purchases within the ecosystem), so without effective competition they will want to maximise pricing for the early upgraders before reducing down the line for the masses. More expensive than usual throughout the full console cycle though.

That is unless the Pro at these prices completely flops.

Exclusive: How Intel lost the Sony PlayStation business

  • Intel lost PlayStation 6 chip contract to AMD in 2022, sources say
  • Dispute over profit margins blocked Intel-Sony deal, sources say
  • PlayStation deal could have generated $30 billion in revenue, sources say
One thing that's interesting in the article that seems to have led to this decision is backwards compatibility.

Console chip designs typically try to ensure compatibility with earlier versions of the system, to allow users to run older games on the new hardware. Moving from AMD, which made the PlayStation 5 chip, to Intel would have risked backwards compatibility, which was a subject of discussion between Intel and Sony engineers and executives, the sources said.
Ensuring backward compatibility with prior versions of the PlayStation would have been costly and taken engineering resources. Allowing PlayStation users to play games they have purchased for older systems is a feature Sony often includes in a next-generation system.

So despite the issues Sony has been having in recent weeks, this is one decision that seems smart. Basically they didn't want to repeat the issue they had the PS3.

I hope the PS5 Pro flops.

Ps6 for $599 is a large difference from the Ps5's launch price. Yet even before the PS6 comes out, we saw Sony priced PS5 pro for $699... which is absolutely insane. A $200 difference from the Ps5 slim. And if you compare it to Ps4 pro's launch price, it is even much worse.

At this point, I expect the worst. Though I can see Sony luring people over a $699 Ps6 if they have plenty òf massive launch games.

PS6 price is worrisome after hearing about the PS5 PRO It would be a shock if the PS6 launches with $499

I hope the Ps5 pro flops so hard that it costs Sony money for the investment they made in the R&D of it. that'll really teach em to arrogantly overprice.

I'm still waiting on Sony to give me legitimate reason to give **** about PS6

I think $549 would be a generous launch price for the Ps6.

I think the time between 2020 and 2028 is a reasonable reason for the Ps6 not to have the same launch price as the Ps5. If they sell it for $499, that would be too generous of Sony considering Ps5 pro's price.

Looking at the bright side, for those who own both PlayStation and Xbox, might only to get a new one in the next generation of home consoles, if Series X doesn't have a successor. So they would be only paying for a PS6 in 2028. PSVR3 isn't likely to happen either.

you use the word generous as if more than half a thousand dollars is affordable in the first place. I'd say that would be Sony being reasonable, and even THAT is pushing it.

I'm using generous for Sony's part, as that would be low for them.

Let me be clear, I didn't imply 500 dollars as cheap and affordable for the general public and for myself... especially for people like me who live outside of America, would be paying a lot more just like with the PS5. What an asinine comment.

how was I being asinine? low for Sony would be something like $300 or $400, something under half a thousand dollars. Ps5 launched at $500 and I wouldn't call that generous. maybe reasonable, that's it.

PS5 Pro is being priced at $699. So yes, it would be generous of them to sell PS6 for $549.

The fact that you spinned my comment to something else is asinine. And no they wouldn't be pricing a PS6 for $300 to $400, especially in the late 2020s. Lets be realistic here and like I already said, in my previous post. I'm already expecting the worst when it comes to the pricing of this, as it would be $100 more from where I live.

what the HELL are you talking about? I didn't spin anything that you said. I quoted you and responded to your thoughts with my own. and I don't appreciate you making this conversation hostile.

I never said that they would price it from $300-$400. I said if they did price it under half a thousand dollars, then THAT would be a low price.

yeah well realistically there is nothing generous about Sony pricing their video game hardware at or above half a grand.

Either

A) a lower cost console PS6 and higher cost console PS6
B) a console PS6 and a portable PS6
C) 2 test chip candidates but only one will ultimately be used in a console

B makes sense because consoles are losing market share to Nintendo portables, phones, and tablets and PC portables (SteamDeck) for years.

Kepler said, “There’s two SoCs in development for next-gen, idk if it’s a Series X/S situation or home console + handheld, but probably one of them will be affordable at least.”

Rumours suggest that the next-generation Xbox will have a main console and a handheld version, so it’s possible that PlayStation is also considering a similar approach with its hardware. In the last couple of years, the handheld gaming market has seen a boom, with PlayStation themselves also happen with the PlayStation Portal’s sales despite it being an accessory to the PlayStation 5. So it’s entirely plausible that the console giant could be eyeing up a dedicated handheld.

None of this solves Sony’s major problem which is a lack of first party exclusives especially if you don’t count the parade of superfluous remasters and remakes. Under Jim Ryan the ‘vision’ was to spam GaaS shooter games (like Disney was spamming Marvel/Star Wars product under Bob Chapek) with plans for 12 of them but both he and that plan have been removed.

This sounds bad. We don't need two different versions of the Ps6 aside from having a disc drive or not.

while a portable ps6... if its like a Switch which you can take it out of the house to play... well its just gonna be PSP3. Not sure how much power can a handheld PS6 handle without remote play.

this sounds confusing.

Series X still sold 25 million units, so I don't see them abandoning new consoles in the future yet. But its dwindling. I can see them finally pulling the cord when the next console only sold around 10 to 15 million. They would be saving a lot, by porting Xbox games to PS5/6, compare to releasing new hardware.
