Sony is bringing back Crash Bandicoot, says NECA director of product development [Update]

Published 14 hours ago. 231 comments.

"I see they're bringing Crash Bandicoot back."

Crash-Bandicoot-NECA_02-14-16.jpg

Update: A representative for NECA told GameSpot that the comment was made in error
.

“It’s not the case,” the rep said. “Someone has misunderstood a comment he made. Randy saw a faked fan-made image right before he came to the show and said that if the game were coming back, we’d love to do figures.”
The image in question is likely this, which has been making the rounds online.
Original: Randy Falk, director of product development at National Entertainment Collectibles Association (NECA)—a company that works with Sony on collectible figures—said that Sony is bringing back Crash Bandicoot during an interview at Toy Fair 2016, which began yesterday in New York City.
Speaking to Pixel Dan, Falk said, “On the modern gaming front, we’re going strong. We’ve got a lot of cool stuff going on with Sony. So we have Ultimate Kratos from God of War III that’s about to hit retail. We have Uncharted 4 Nathan Drake, which comes out in May. And then LittleBigPlanet is doing really well, so we have some more of those here on display, too.”
After Dan compliments the Kratos figure, Falk continues: “Yeah, that’s one we wanted to do way back when, and finally, we’ve been able to get back in with Sony and get some of that stuff out. And looking at some of their other titles, I see they’re bringing Crash Bandicoot back, which is really cool. There’s some great stuff there.”
Far too many signs have pointed to Sony somehow resurrecting the Crash Bandicoot series. In brief:

  • Before PlayStation 4 launched, Sony released a trailer featuring subtle imagery that suggested Crash Bandicoot had returned to the company. The same trailer featured a Street Fighter Haduoken cab service, and both Ultra Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter V were announced for PlayStation 4 a year later.
  • Robomodo has asked Activision if it could include Crash Bandicoot in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, but were denied. On Twitter, the company said it was not Activision’s fault, and that it was a combination of timing and rights, so it “wasn’t much of a discussion.”
  • At PlayStation Experience 2015 in December, Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Shawn Layden wore a Crash Bandicoot t-shirt with a PlayStation logo on the sleeve (pictured). He similarly wore a Vib Ribbon button-down for Sony Computer Entertainment America’s ice bucket challenge video, and Vib Ribbon was released on PlayStation Network a few months later.
  • The official PlayStation Middle East Twitter account has on and off teased Crash Bandicoot.
  • If you’re a fan of NeoGAF insiders, it’s apparently happening, according to at least one well-trusted forum member.
Watch Pixel Dan’s interview below. The Crash Bandicoot comment happens around the four-minute mark.

Randy said he mispoke about Crash on Twitter.. but it seems like he's more like "crap.I gotta fix this or we won't get to make crash figures."

At this poiny.. deny all they want.. I think it's obvious.

missed these cause I haven't been checking out operation rain fall as often. two interviews on grand kingdom

Tomohiko-Deguchi.png

NISA’s Press Event 2016 gave us the opportunity to sit down and talk with the CEO of Monochrome Tomohiko Deguchi. After my obviously nervous introduction to Deguchi-San, we got to speak about the upcoming western release of his RPG Grand Kingdom. We also got to spend some hands-on time with the game and gave our impressions.
What is the general story premise behind Grand Kingdom?
The player becomes the captain of a mercenary squad, and they’ll lead around four units of a guild.
You directed the prior game in the series, Grand Knights History, that was exclusively released in Japan. What lessons have you learned from that game that you are now applying to directing Grand Kingdom?
In Grand Knights History, we were not able to focus on the RPG aspect, but now in Grand Kingdom, we were able to spend time with the RPG elements and create a game that players could enjoy.
What was Grand Kingdom‘s reception like in Japan when it was launched in November 2015?
A lot of players have commented on how good the battle system is. At first, it takes some time to get used to, but after, it’s incredibly addicting.
Are there any features or parts of the game that, looking back on it now, you wish you could go back and change or improve upon?
We really wanted to include more online features that open more ways of communication. Currently, it seems social media like Twitter and Facebook hosts most of the communication, so we tried to rely on that style without incorporating it into the game.
So how will players be able to interact online?
In Grand Knights History, there was a system where players would be able to interact via Twitter. Grand Kingdom has that same element but improved upon.
08-1.jpg

Will there be cross-save between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita?
So there is no cross-save, but you can play in the same online server between both version.
How can a player customize their own character in Grand Kingdom?
You can customize the character from the color of the skin, hair and costume. There are different styles of armor, weapons and voices that your character can have also.
Is it true that the game was written in America and translated in Japanese?
No, the game was written in Japanese first and then translated into English.
Will North America receive the extra story DLC that was released in Japan?
Yes, in Japan there were extra stories. All of those will be included with the game’s Western release.
Grand-Kingdom.jpg
Grand Knights History

Do you know if there are any current plans to re-attempt to localize Grand Knights History for North America and Europe?
XSEED still owns the localization rights. I haven’t heard if they are still going through with that.
Does your team get to look over the translated scripts for approval, in order to stay true to the tone of the game?
In order for the intonations and naming accents to be correct, NISA sends us the scripts to approve and implement into the game.
What are your plans for the future? What video game project are you looking to become involved in next?
Not only am I the Director of Grand Kingdom, but I am also the CEO of Monochrome. I created Monochrome in the first place to create games that I want to create from now on.
Do you plan to bring those games West?
[thumbs up] Yes!
One last question are you playing any games right now, other than your own?
Yes, Dragon Quest Builders.

At NISA’s Press Event 2016 I had the chance to speak with a member of NISA’s translation team, Coco Tollini. She has been with the company for a year and was nice enough to sit down with me and answer questions about her time translating Grand Kingdom. We’ve also interview CEO of Monochrome Tomohiko Deguchi about Grand Kingdom and have a hands-on impressions piece.

What’s the most recent game that you’ve worked on?
I actually last worked on Grand Kingdom.

How did you approach translating this game?
Well I did a little bit of research first to get to know more about the game, but after that I just went head first into the story.

How do you translate these games to make sense to American audience, but still keep the tone of the Japanese text?
We do have teams and editors. What I do is translate the whole thing so that it makes sense to the editor and they’ll edit it so that it keeps it’s tone, but also allow it to make sense to the American audience.

Some companies take it upon themselves to take a game and instead of keep the tone of the Japanese text, they decide to make it their own and alter scenes completely. Is this being done in Grand Kingdom?

Not at all, we are being sure to make it true to the Japanese text. We still try our hardest to make it make sense. Since the game is not set in Japan, we had to make it make sense in a medieval world. So at times we had to change the spellings of some Japanese words just so that it can be read in English, but for the most part we like to stay true because that’s what we want as much as our fans.

How long did it take for you to translate Grand Kingdom?
It actually took a few months. It’s a very long process.

Does NISA ever keep tabs on their translators or ask you to work faster?
Nope not at all, they are really trusting of us and I think it’s good that they give us our responsibility. As long as the end product is good, that’s all that matters. That’s what I really like about our company, everyone is responsible for their own work and that makes us all want to work harder for each other.

So what do you like most about Grand Kingdom?

The story. Yea, it is full of battles and action, but when you get into the sub campaigns of the four great nations, each nation has really strong characters and I cried while translating it.

If someone wanted to get into translating for a video game company, what advice would you give them?

As far a translating, work hard on getting your Japanese speaking skills up. Also, have a good grasp on the English language because it’s very important being able to make it make sense in English. We’re always accepting resumes at NISA.

Thank you so much for your time.
You’re welcome, and thank you.

So besides Black Friday what's the best time of year to get a PS4? I want to get one and have the money but I'm in no hurry. There's only a few games I want to get for it right now like Fallout and Bloodborne.

other than standard pricecut announcements, I would just be on the lookout for special temporary deals. that just happens from time to time.

like ign one day posted a $40 deal for psplus. I didn't take advantage of it because I didn't realize how rare that is.

Hey guys, wondering if anyone can help me.

I'm seriously considering installing a new harddrive on my PS4, and wanted to know if anyone knew anything about it?

I'm looking at a Toshiba L200 2.5" 1tb harddisk.
I don't really know much about this stuff, but it's specifications are:
5400 RPM, interface is SATA 2.0, and I think it's HDD. I don't know what any of this means, but you might.

I'd greatly appreciate anyone guiding me, whether or not this would be a fine harddisk to install. Will it slow anything down, or whatever?

Cheers.

RPM = Rotations Per Minute
SATA = Serial Attachment
HDD = Hard Disk Drive

Anyway, as long as it isn't thicker than 9.5mm that should be fine.

Cheers. It shouldn't be slower or perform worse than the harddisk already in the PS4?

Also, that's what she said. And what if it's exactly 9.5mm?

So they only use I've got out of my ps4 the last 6 months or so has been to fire it up occasionally on the weekends to watch standup on Netflix. So I've decided to sell it. So I'm selling the 500 GB system and 1 controller w/ PS Gold Wireless headphones, camera, 6 games and 2 Blu-rays. I'm asking $450 for the whole shebang, not interested in splitting anything up either. I'd be willing to ship it for free anywhere in the continental US included for that price as well. I've got Paypal and this would be treated as a business transaction so the buyer is protected for the transaction. PM if anyone is interested.

http://kotaku.com/sources-sony-is-working-on-a-ps4-5-1765723053

So, I'm not sure how to take this news

Sony is currently planning a new version of the PS4 with increased graphical power and games running at 4K resolution, developer sources tell Kotaku.
We don’t know whether current PS4 owners will be able to upgrade or if they’ll have to buy an entirely new device to benefit from this power boost, but from what we hear, Sony has started briefing developers.

Based on conversations with developers who have spoken with Sony, this ‘PS4.5’ will include an upgraded GPU both to support high-end 4K resolution for games and add more processing power that can enhance the games supported by PlayStation VR, the headset Sony will launch this fall. It’s unclear if ‘PS4.5’ is an official name or just a nickname that developers have been using. One developer jokingly called it the ‘PS4K’ while telling me about the device.

In layman’s terms, 4K resolution is around four times the pixel size of 1080p, which is the current standard for games on PlayStation 4 and competing consoles. The current PS4 can output 4K photos and videos, but cannot support 4K resolutions for games. With this upgrade, it would. Besides resolution, developers would have an opportunity to push more effects and other graphical tweaks to make their games look better, thanks to the new GPU.
A more powerful PS4 would also allow the machine to be more competitive with PCs in the world of virtual reality. With a higher-end GPU, the PS4 could more easily match up against the more expensive Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtual reality headsets, which are designed to work with powerful PCs.
When contacted yesterday about this report, Sony declined to comment. “We can’t comment on rumors or speculation,” a spokesperson said in an e-mail.
The circle of people who knew about this upgraded PS4 was small until recently. I first heard about the device from one trusted source, then two. Kotaku’s Jason Schreier and Stephen Totilo were also able to independently verify the existence of these hardware plans with their own developer sources, although some of the details have been vague; one source told us that the device felt “exploratory” and that it may not even be released this year.

There's more at the link, though most of it is speculation. I have to say, I'm not sure how I feel about that. The model works fine for handhelds since they are, in theory, relatively inexpensive, but trying to apply it to home consoles seems iffy to me. It'd basically made them into what the Steam machines are in premade PC boxes. Maybe that's where the industry is headed, though.

Thats actually an old rumor but I can see that and dont think its a big deal. You would need a 4K tv anyway to take advantage of it which most people do not. Games wouldnt suddenly be developed at 4K bc the audience is too low to justify that but this theoretical system would be able to upscale for those that do have 4K sets

PSN has a flash sale going on right now. SOme stuff down to $1.

I highly recommend everyone get the Deadly Premonition DC for $5. It's insane and I love it. :D

having console turn into iterations is a pretty big deal

I am aware that the rumor is an older one, but this says it was actually talked about at GDC behind the scenes, so I think there's more meat to it. But you missed part of this, the revision would be more than just the ability to display at 4K, it would actually have beefy hardware under the hood, which could potentially mean it could play more games that the original model cannot. If it ends up to be, it could be the first step to having home consoles released in the style of PCs or mobile phones.

Could be, anyway. Obviously, it's speculation now. We'll have to see. It would definitely change the scape of home console releases if it ends up being true and working.

I really hope it happens. These current consoles can do with a boost. Tech moves too fast nowadays for things to only be upgraded every 8 years.

I hope it doesnt. I don't want to be locked out of games because I don't feel like spending 600+ on another damn PS4.
