Maybe, but I doubt it will be all that noticeable for the most part.

if it's going to be barely noticeable then what's the point of even doing it? like, if the average person can't tell the difference in performance what incentive will the consumer have to upgrade?

There probably won't be much of one at first, with Sony eventually phasing out the older models to only sell the newer ones. Basically the Slim versions of the PS3 with a little more power and to try and push 4K as a format.

you mention the Ps3 slim and it makes me think that the Ps4K could also be the slim Ps4

so this other thing I found on a gaf thread, I don't think it's true (since MANY more sources besides Kotaku reported it) but it's worth posting

I would like to think that since this is uncharted territory we're all entering into that Sony would try to ease the transition by offering a generous upgrade path for early adopters. I could almost see an announcement at E3 like, "If you purchased a PS4 Base Model before such and such date, for a limited time you can send us your current PS4 plus $100, and we'll send you a PS4 Neo." Something like that would be smart PR move I think.

That would be great for customers. But would they make any money out of it?

there's nearly 40 million PS4 owners. Even if only 5% took advantage of this, that would be a heck of alot to deal with. Then theres the shipping cost of all those units to and from Sony and they'd be left with warehouses fill of refurbished PS4s. I dont see this happening, especially since an upgrade isnt a requirement.

To be clear I definitely don't think it will happen. But it seems to me that if you're going to rock the boat, then you should expect that people will be pissed off. And IF you care about your users, then you ought to do something to assuage their anxiety.

It really only applies if you're rocking the boat that much, and the anxiety being generated is actually justified.

that would be proper but i still wouldn't be happy with that because i end up spending more than the new adopters/if i didn't buy one this whole time. i paid $400+ for it, at best i can trade it in for $100 so i end up spending $500 on hardware, whereas Ps4K will probably be $400 so if I had known and wited (if I wanted it at all) I still get the right deal.

I don't think a trade-in is beyond the realm of possibility but the deal would be much worse if it happened. Like pay $250-$300. The PS4k is probably not going to be super-cheap to produce and once a trade-in deal is offered you have to account for at least the possibility that take-up might be a very high percentage of your current users. In fact making the deal too good will increase the take-up percentage which you want to keep low unless you are making sufficient money on the trade-ins themselves. The overall project has to have a fair expectation of making a better than average rate of return given the risk taken and with 40m users, the number of brand new buyers is unlikely to be enough to subsidise and surpass a large number of trade-in upgraders.

Sony will probably offer a trade in deal through the retailers.

right now, Gamestop is offering $200 trade in credit for your X1 or PS4 towards the purchase of the opposite system.

Best Buy often offers trade in deals where they give you $100 for the old console plus $50 coupon towards a new console.

So, I can see a similar deal being offered to upgrade to the Neo.

but there better be a good trade in offer. that's the only way Sony will get me to upgrade to a Neo. I'm not paying $400 for another console a mere 2.5 years after buying the PS4.

I would be willing to pay about $200 to upgrade, though.

It wont matter now. With 40M sold, people are already invested in the PS4. You will either continue to play and support it as you are or you'll get a PS4.5. I dont see a significant amount of people abandoning PS4 gaming for the competition even if they are upset at what's happening. It wont matter this gen. What it does have though are implications for next gen and this could set a bad precedent that could hurt PS5 initial sales

that's the risk you always take when being a 1st/early adopter of tech.

well, I am a PS4 owner who could be swayed towards the X1 side (again) if MS can answer with their own upgraded X1 that matches the Neo's specs.

so you'll switch over if MS does the exact same thing that will turn you off from Sony? How does that even make sense? If you switch between consoles anyway, trust and believe you are in the minority.

I never said I'd switch because of what Sony is doing by releasing the Neo.

I would have other reasons for switching.

in terms of the same hardware, sure. you have a point. but i never had a need to turn in my fat playstation for a slim one.

and that is a good point.

we will definitely be entering uncharted territory if the PS4 Neo is in fact real.

maybe the PS4 Neo will let us finally use custom images as our wallpaper and listen to music cds. :o

KazHiraiCEO always on point with the bantz.

He sounded ridiculous ranting so vehemently about something that he will support by buying it

He's not a regular consumer though. He has to buy it for work and can write it off.

No he doesn't bc all PS4s will run the same games. His justification for buying one is that he is a PS fan and buys everything they put out he likes what they do ; not bc he needs to for work. He's his own boss now. He doesn't need to own one. He's going to get it bc he wants one. He says this decision doesn't affect him and he's complaining for the PS4 userbase
