Venom The Official Rate & Review Venom Thread (SPOILERS!!!)

Dudes. I loved this movie. Okay, maybe love is a stretch, but I really liked this movie. To anyone who says X-Men (2000) is a good movie and is hating on this, I don't understand you.

I like this character and I think he deserves a bit of spotlight. Spotlight that the MCU may have never granted him. I'm not saying this is top tier CBM, but it's better than bottom tier MCU for sure. Tom Hardy nailed Brock if you ask me. Eddie and Venom had decent chemistry for being a cgi (mostly invisible) character.

I'm excited to see Venom 2: Maximum Carnage and I HOPE Tom Holland is allowed to co-star. That would just be so awesome. Picture this:

Peter Parker on field trip to the bay area, bumps into Eddie on the train, recognizes him from the Bugle. Hey man, whats up, Venom sees a more viable host and takes over Spidey. Black Suit spider-man is overwhelmed by Carnage and Venom/Spidey join forces to take him down.

Please, Mr Feige.

haha. Anyway, 8/10. Might slip to a 7.5, but I'm riding a high after having just seen it.

Overall me and my buddy liked it but we can see why others didn’t. So 7/10 for me and bring on the sequel.

A bit of a meandering, bewildering, mismanaged, rushed and bizarre mess. I thought they nailed the overall look of Venom (minus the white spider, connection to Spider-Man and webslinging), his mannerisms and voice but there could've been a little more character development, I thought the symbiote seeping into people's skin was dumb, the lobster tank scene was too much and it seemed kind of tone deaf in areas too.

5/10. Some good but a whole lot bad.

The movie is the typical Sony f**k up. The bad outweigh the good in this film unfortunately and while it's not on the level of movies like Elektra, Catwoman, Batman & Robin, it still isn't anywhere near good. When I first heard about the fact that they are making this film, I thought was a bad idea. Seeing Tom Hardy taking the role was the first sign that gave me some sort of hope for it and to be honest, him as Eddie is the only good part of this movie and also his relation/interaction with the Symbiote. And that is about it. Other than this, there really aren't many other positives to write about: CGI is not as good as it should be, Carlton Drake is a boring and predictable villain, I couldn't care less about Eddie & Anne (don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Michelle Williams, who is a good actress; it's the script that is the problem), the Symbiote's sudden change of heart about Earth was out of nowhere and all of a sudden and there are many other problems with the plot overall. And another thing: the fact that it wasn't rated R, wasn't helping it either as it took away from some of the scenes, but that's Sony for you: money before quality. If there's a sequel, with Carnage, it will probably be PG also and that will stink even worse!
Another thing which I did not like and this has nothing to do with the movies itself, but rather with the trailer, is how they showed key parts of the movie in the trailer already! And I complained about that before watching Venom in theater, you can really tell how the story unfolds if you watched the trailer and that kinda takes away from the movie, even though the story isn't good to begin with.

5/10
from me, because there were a few positives in there, but I wouldn't watch it again.

This film feels like it would have fit in the TASM universe. The Life Foundation is basically "Not Oscorp" and I'm sure we would have gotten a similar quality film if the TASM series continued.

Dude, I haven't seen the film yet, so I can't voice my opinions on the film itself, but this has been Son't main problem...ESPECIALLY with their Spider-Man films since part 2. They literally give you the entire plot synopsis in the trailer, and always show the KEY beats (even spoilers). From Spider-Man 3, where they showed the entire Harry/Peter fight in a preview on network TV MONTHS before the film, Peter getting rid of the symbiote, and other things, to the worse transgressor, Amazing Spider-man 2, where you literally see the LAST SCENE from the film in the preview (Rhino fight), Gwen's death, Harry's Goblin turn, and even the entire Sinister Six locker storage (which is all you see of it in the film, so it equates to nothing). Shoot, I was shocked beyond belief that they didn't spoil the Spider-Man Homecoming twist with Vulture in the previews. I mean, they shows a lot, but it looked like Disney/Feige put the kibosh on a lot of their spoilery ways!
That's what has me worried about Spider-Verse, they don't seem to be saving any surprises for the film. We already know 60% of the film from the preview. Maybe I should just stop watching trailers...

Sony needs to stop with these spoilers in trailers. I seriously don't get it AT ALL... they give away everything.

They revealed just a little too much with Homecoming, but they held back in comparison to their other films. I think marvel studios kept them at bay with that one.

I'm getting worried about Into the Spider-Verse since the trailers so far have revealed a lot. Now I know how certain characters meet and interact.

Thanks, Sony. You really know how to **** up everything, don't you?

I agree guys. And @shinlyle, indeed, maybe you should stop watching trailers from Sony Movies!:pal: It shouldn't be the case, but that's how they like to do it, for some odd reason.

I can't believe we are going to get a Morbius movies... my God. But anyway, back to reviews. Let's not derail this thread.

7/10. I had fun. I've always like Venom and his humour and I felt like the film really portrayed that. I'm hoping with how well it did at the box office for the weekend that the sequel will be made.

I just ordered Lethal Protector, but can anyone recommend another really good Eddie/Venom comic or miniseries to read? It's been so long since I read any of the stories, I miss Venom haha.

^^ Yes, I personally love VENOM Vol.3 : Lethal Protector - Blood In The Water

It's a great mini collection issue of the Venom issues 154 till' 158. It was released in 2016 and it tells the story from the Symbiote's perspective, instead of Eddie's, which I like.

I loved this movie. My favorite development of the Venom comics was making the symbiote into and actual character. And I am really happy that they did that here. The push and pull between Eddie and Venom was great. The 15ish people who were at my morning showing all erupted at the "*****" line. Tom Hardy single handidly makes this an enjoyable film.

Now, if they could spend some of the success on some better wigs...

Good recommendation. A lot of people knocked on Costa's run on Venom, and while I thought he did tell his fair share of very generic stories, he also brought some good things to the table. Donny Cates of course is making him look bad but Cates is just that good.

That said, I've seen a lot of reviewers critiqued that Venom talks like a 12 year old, however if anything, because I was familiar with the dialogue Costa gave the symbiote, I found it rather faithful in the movie.

Well, you can't go wrong with the new stuff by Donny Cates, first arc just finished. I also recommend a recent miniseries by Mike Costa called Venom: First Host.

Venom #154 is probably one of my favorites venom issues ever..

I gave this one a 3/10.

From start to finish, it felt like a massive trainwreck spilling out into the freeway causing a massive backlog of traffic that then caused a minor explosion in some abandoned part of downtown where no one really got hurt but it looked like *hehe* carnage.

That's this movie, only with Tom Hardy conducting the train. And being delightfully unhinged while doing it.

as someone who was initially skeptical about a spidey-less venom movie i really enjoyed it
is it perfect ? no not really but for me atleast i found it entertaining and enjoyable as a popcorn flick

Tom really pulls it together as both eddie and venom
hoping it does well enough to grant a sequel because that post credit scene really made me happy

6.5 or 7/10 not a bad film but not great. Thought the story could have been better the action was also a little forgettable but what really carried the movie was the dynamic between venom and Eddie which were the highlights of the film and made the movie fun to watch

Was very pleasantly surprised with this movie.

After all the controversy of there being no Spider-Man (to which there should really be no Venom) I was ready to just sit down and see if Venom is actually any good and im glad to say I think it was. So will get my bad out of the way first then move on to the good as there's a lot more of that

The Bad
His Eddie was funny although I thought they maybe made a bit of an error in not making him sympathetic enough before villainizing him with having him stealing Anne's files. And the new boyfriend Dr Dan was a little too nice in the sense I didn't really want to root against him lol. (If I could use Ant-Man for an example Paxton is a great guy in that but they always skew it just enough so you're always rooting for Scott). Last complaint was that it maybe took 10-15 mins longer to get going other than I would have liked. No knock on Ahmed personally but I felt this villain role could have done by just about anyone as in the first couple minutes the establish him as Evil Elon and he never really gets any more development. And finally a dumb one but the old lady taking 6 months to walk to the airport lol.

The Good
Loved the back and fourth between Venom & Eddie and Eddie's horror in the initial exchanges as he things he's going insane. (Also loved the scene with Dan when Eddie's in the MRI, not sure if it was intended as such but you get the sense Eddie didn't know if it was Dan or Venom's voice in his head talking to him so takes his time and eventually he tentatively answers yes). The JUMP!!! scene was hilarious, the whole cinema was laughing at that part. Venom's admittance that he was a loser on his planet, now this may have divided some but I thought it fit nice in giving Venom a reason to side with Eddie while not feeling forced, I think that point was reinforced with Riot. He was physically more imposing than Venom, more lethal and more callous so it kind of made sense why Venom didn't want millions more like him. I really enjoyed Riot actually seemed like a more fleshed out character than his host did. Eddie and Venom use "we" from the get go while Riot has to be reminded by Drake's character a little detail that I thought helped to show a huge difference between the two. I couldn't not mention the scene where he took down the SWAT team that was epic especially COPY!!!!.

After Credits Scene

Loved this tease for Kasady, think Harrelson will be perfect for the role. My top Spider-Man villains have always been Venom & Carnage so cant wait to see them face off.

10/10 to everything you said.

This a decent outing. Nothing spectacular, but Tom Hardy sells it hard. Unfortunately, save for a few moments in the second half of the movie with Michelle Williams, Hardy is the only notable performance in it. I was shocked how bland Riz Ahmed was in this. And the characterization wasn't weak - he had some character beats (clearly has a God complex), but his performance lacked any life and frankly some scenery chewing and camp. He should have gone broader, because he barely registered on screen. The action was fun, but best stuff was all in the trailers. The end fight gave me Black Panther CGI flashbacks. I saw it in 3D and it was too dark. I think this needed more clear violence, an R rating, given what Venom is. I think they were trying to make an PG-13 Deadpool version of Venom. The jokes weren't the greatest, but again Tom Hardy sells it hard - his and Venom are the best part of the movie. I would give it 6/10 tops.

To me, it's a Venom movie. Don't go to see it expecting to see Iron Man, Eddie Brock isn't Tony Stark. Tony is a genius using his brain and technology to take on corporate or political threats. Eddie punches things, argues with himself and fights other powerful but not intellectual foes. In that regard, the movie delivered. It accomplished what it set out to do, remind long time Venom fans of the comics we read in the 90s. They were light on plot but had lots of action and weird comic book sci fi. It isn't Macbeth and it shouldn't be. I just enjoyed it for what it was, a movie with lots of Easter eggs for long time fans. I'm not saying every Marvel movie should be like this, god no. But it is a good Venom movie.

This guy. He gets it.

Even with the given premise, the Venom film could have been a lot better.
