exactly, i dont see how people compare SR to the hulk, which wasnt liked much by the general public. they are the ones who make movies successful, and a superman sequel that appeals more to the general audience will make a ton because sr was still a pretty popular move, both at the theater and on dvd (plus the character itself)

I still feel the overriding concern here is the Siegel trial. I find it disconcerting that Warners and the Siegels decided to take this to trial instead of coming to an amicable agreement out of court on profit sharing. It's also why I feel strongly that Warners won't commit to anything until they know exactly how much of their profits they're going to have to share with the Siegels. Barring a possible appeal or retrial, that could be around the Christmas timeframe. Yes, we could be in for a long ride.

Yes, exactly sometimes Archangel and Jayne have been right on things, not Superman things, but things in general. And yes, Showtime has been right sometimes and sometimes not. In this situation, one side is right and the other side is wrong or is ********ting everyone. I think that Archangel and Jayne are. The funny thing is you have both sides saying that the other side is wrong and both sound convincing. So, I think, and this is just my opinion, if that insider on BlueTights.net who said that an announcement on the Superman Returns sequel would happen after the release of The Dark Knight, if it's not announced at all during the last two weeks of this month then a sequel to Superman Returns is not happening. But I guess we'll see.

If Superman Returns was so popular a sequel would have been greenlit by now. It's obvious that the movie wasn't overwhelming loved like some fans like to claim. On the flip side it's obvious that the movie wasn't hated and shouldn't be compared to Hulk.

I'll agree on one thing, the geeks don't matter, the regular folks are the studios main focus. I'd argue, that the reason that a sequel hasn't materialized and hasn't even been greenlit is because the average moviegoer didn't "get" SR as much as some geeks did. They may yet make a sequel to SR and I've all but bet on it but it's taking an awful long time for something that a couple of fans say was a big hit to get a sequel

I don't think a SR sequel would make a ton of money. People don't want a Superman movie in which the script struggles to find a place for Jason. Any sequel is doomed to have to address things people didn't like about SR. Like with The Hulk, the people will want to see a dumbed down Superman movie with a money fight (with a villain that is a physical threat to him). A Singer and Co. sequel won't do this, so the movie would make similar BO IMO, and when your character requires a 200 mil budget, you need to perform better than that.

Also, WB is slow to greenlight it for a reason. If the movie was loved, it would have been greenlighted quickly like TDK was. The reaction was mixed. Though I SEE SPIDEY beat me to this point I see.

In light of the Siegel trial, I wouldn't go so far as to say that MOS isn't going to happen if we don't hear anything in the next month or so. Warners doesn't need to rush to a decision just yet. There's still plenty of time before production would have to start for a 2010 release. I'd venture to go as far as to say that the pending litigation with the Siegels might prevent them from making anything public, even if the decision to move forward on MOS has been privately made already.

I agree, I don't think my problems with the films are the exact same as the average moviegoer. I think that the lack of Supervillain and drabby tone is why the movie wasn't a bigger hit and no, I don't mean Spider-Man sized hit, I mean atleast 250mil in the U.S. hit. I think that a Supervillian and lighter tone would have helped the film at the boxoffice.

I used BB since BB made similar BO to SR and wasn't huge right out of the gate, while SM1 and IM were monster hits opening weekend.

Well, that might be RDJ actually, since he was the thing people loved most about IM.

But still, Favs deserves his reward for IM...by paying the man his money!!! Marvel had best not be cheap on the man

Sure they can. 6 to 8 months for pre-production and filming and another 10 to 12 months for post-production is more than adequate for MOS. If they go reboot, that team will probably need the whole 18 months, but I still don't see a problem with that timeline.

Of course this discussion is moot if Warners decides on a 2011 release for a Supes movie instead. That might be the case if they are moving forward on JL:M for 2010, which, though some consider unlikely, is still within the realm of possibility. All questions will be answered in good time.

Eh, they made a 150million dollar semi sequel to a movie most people hated after only 5years, so I don't think that they are the smartest company on the block. Still I see Favs coming back, Marvel is just getting a bit overly excited.

I agreed with some of what you said, but this point really stood out. We were divided before Superman Returns, but IMO it's because Superman as a character has been around a long time. My grandfather is a Superman fan! So, of course, you're not going to be able to please everyone's taste from 0-90. But, the division is only apparent on the internet. It's not like people are walking around with "I hate Bryan Singer" shirts or vice versa. Their aren't gang wars at the conventions of "lovers" and "haters". LOL....we haven't reached the absurbity of Star War fans, and aren't attacking each other with fake light sabers.

Anyways, I think people are overestimating the division.

And please stop speaking for the GP concerning SR. The very favorable reviews, BO and good dvd sales clearly showed that the GP liked SR enough and that there was some interest in the character. Those are the only parameters we have to gauch the success of a film. Apparently, the GP just wanted more action and for Supes to throw some punches. They didn't mind Jason or Richard at all. Or the 'the suit'.

Like I said to others, not every movie get a sequel right away. Remeber Hellboy? That movie came out in 2004, thus the sequel came out 4 yrs. after the first. If MoS come out in 2010, that 4 yrs. after SR came out like Hellboy. I wouldn't say SR is extremely popular, but it isn't the worst either.

Agreed. I don't think Hulk is as popular as Superman, so that movie was more or less doomed from the get-go.

The simple fact is SR was NOT a great Superman film. It was a mediocre film and a bad SUperman film. THat's it. Otherwise, there wouldn't be the unreal fan division and WB wouldn't be gridlocked on what's coming next. SR clearly failed in many ways. WB is sitting on it's decision apparently b/c they aren't confident in SInger's next idea (his writers are gone, remember). All this points to SR failing to 1. reinvigorate a dead franchise 2. connect with the GA 3. unite fans behind a new Superman film franchise.


I have no problem with people liking SR, but I am saddened by it. Everyone has his/her own taste. I just don't think it can be stated as being a great film or hugely successful. THere's even less evidence that it was a 'good' SUperman film. It also can't be claimed to be faithful to the essence of the character for many of the reasons stated throughout all the posts from the past 2 years. Hey, you like it, great, but don't think it is faithful to the essence of the character, that's just ridiculous. Maybe that's a reason for some to like it.
