How many mutants actually got secondary mutations, though? Emma Frost and Beast are the only 2 I know of.

Black Tom Cassidy turned into a walking tree.

Elixir's skin turned golden and he gained the power to hurt people as well as heal.

Archangel gained the power to heal people with his blood.

Icarus grew wings (he always had the wacky voice powers).

That was not a secondary mutation. He didnt always have voice powers. The first time we ever saw him as a mutant, he had both his voice and wings. I dont think Elixir's death touch was ever classified as one either. Seemed more like a natural progression of his abilties which hadnt fully developed due to his youth

I don't mind secondary mutations if there's some kind of connection to their overall power set. Emma Frost suddenly getting to turn to diamond, however, just felt random.

It made perfect sense for why it developed.

I thought Sam Guthrie always had a younger sibling with a melodic voice, but the wings on Jay didn't show up until "She Lies with Angels."

I only just realized reading X-Force the other day that Fantomex is based on Diabolik. Can't believe I didn't notice that before.

Secondary mutations are brought about by extreme stress when mutants are placed in life or death situations and they develop to save them. That was the case for most examples, Iceman, Beast, Angel, Polaris, Elixir, etc.... Emma had a building topple over her so she developed diamond skin to protect her from the brunt of that impact. Further mutating her telepathic abilities would have done diddly squat to save her in that moment

When was that shown and when it was, did they ever claim it was a mutation or just talent? If I recall correctly, none of his brothers were mutants until that story

They could have turned her into an amped up telekentic like Betsy was before joining New Exiles. I have no problem with the diamond form, but it would've been more in-line with her powers.

And then she'd be like Jean. Morrison had 3 telepaths on his roster. Having Xavier be the pure TP, Jean be a TK and Emma with diamond skin was a way to diversify their power sets. The diamond skin also worked as a metaphor for her hard exterior personality

Gah. Still wondering a few things.

Right now, what would you say is the main Hulk comic series?
I recently read Avengers #1 (2010). It was free. I am sort of interested in Avengers still. (Mainly Secret Avengers though). Should I bother with these early issues? Is the Kang/Ultron time travel story irrelevant now? Or should I pick up the last 3 volumes and just read it all?
Thank you!

Avengers #1-5 is a horrible introduction to Kang. I'd recommend reading the Kang Dynasty or Avengers Forever.

Yeah I totally get why he did it, I was just pointing out that would probably have been the more logical mutation for her.

I know that was the intention behind Emma's powers and everything, but I've always had a problem with that. Diamonds are extremely hard and difficult to scratch, but they're remarkably easy to crush or shatter. There was a good chance turning her body into diamond would've left a pile of broken jewelry in the rubble on Genosha in place of a human body.

It was some point back in the 90's. They might've been talking about Paige instead of Sam, but it's the same family. It might've just been a singing talent, though.

Yeah, that still strikes me as stupid. That's Darwin's power applied to everybody one time for no discernible reason whatsoever.

Wait, Polaris had a secondary mutation?

Also, Iceman's doesn't count. Everybody thought his secondary mutation was being stuck in his ice form, but they later found out it was all psychological.

She was technically the first one, way back in the late 80s. She lost her magnetic powers due to Zaladane taking them. After that she was powerless and defenseless. The Savage Land mutates were about to kill her and Havok and she grew in size and strength to help save them both from the attack. She almost came across like She-Hulk without the green skin. She was as strong as Colossus. There wasnt any real explanation for her new powers other than that negative emotions were fueling her until Morrison introduced the concept of secondary mutation years later, which seems consistent with what went down with her

If Luke Cage has indestructible skin, does that mean he doesn't feel pain? And does that translate to super strength?

Luke Cage feels pain. His power is that he has extremely dense skin and muscle tissue which render him highly resistant to physical injury and grant him superhuman strength.

His DNA was altered on a cellular level fortifing his various body tissues.

Luke Cage skin isn't industructable but its very very durable. The only thing thats been shown that can pierce his skin is adamantium.

"Currently"

Now thats a topic - the different kinds of invulnerability in the MU.

They say the hulk regenerates so fast thats why bullets bounce off.
I believe the Marvels (Captain) have a skintight forcefield,
then we have the armored folk like Cage,... Grimm, Thor?

I've always hated the idea of Luke having super strength. He should just be a normal dude with unbreakable skin. That's an interesting power alone.

The stats I read for the movies (Ang Lee's mainly) say that Hulk's skin is 10 times thicker than kevlar. I'll stick with that and let the healing factor handle the big stuff.

No it's not.

I think what makes it interesting is if it comes without the super strength. Invulnerability and strength almost always come together. Remove one of them from the equation, and I think it's a lot more interesting.
