The Official Sub-Mariner Discussion Thread

what is with these sub-par artists switching projects and turning in some decency for a change?

first de la torre, and now briones? damn...

I don't know, De La Torre surprised the heck out of me though, that was some nice looking art. I mena, on Ms. marvel he would have a great panel here and there, but really he was medicore at best.

that's what i'm saying...look at his recent stuff on iron man, and it's like a completely different artist. same thing with briones. his art on white tiger was horrendous at times. this new namor art doesn't look half-bad though.

i can't figure it out.

I think Namor can carry a title, his quality is not the issue but the quality of the writer. He has had a 4 year run, two 5 year runs, a 7 year, a 10 year run, and a 14 year run. He was in the Defenders and Invaders for 8 years straight and then had a three year run with the Avengers and two more one year stints with the Invaders.. He has had about 350 solo issues and over 100 with teams. Who beats that? Hulk, Spidey, Avengers, X-men, Daredevil, Ironman, Cap, Thor. Nobody else really?

He has just been badly written over the past decade and don’t even get me started on that baby Namor book they did a couple years ago. What a horrible concept. Something that plagues Namor is that no one that writes him ever knows anything written before.

If a writer actually compiled all the powers Namor has been shown to have... how powerful would he be?

He is listed as being class 100 strength that deteriorates as he dries out but he has that suit that can keep him wet.

He is pretty invunerable as is but also has his Atlantean armor from Neptune which bolsters his invunerability and strength.

He also has Neptunes Trident which allows him to control water, create water elementals, earthquakes, tidal waves, rain, fog etcetera.

He has a limited ability to control marine life, sonar and can create electic blasts light an electric eel.

He can also absorb other forms of energy and use them as electric blasts. He has that horn that gives him total control over all marine life.

He can make mental projections and the Sword of Kamuu is as powerful as the Ebony Blade and can negate any magic even that of Dr. Strange, it also make him stronger and enchanted.

He can fly and has heightened sences and reflexes.

He also has the magic earrings that let him telepathically comunicate with the wearer of the other, Narmorita had the other, RIP

And he has an entire army and has been a member of the three premiere non-mutant supergroups: Avengers, Invaders, Defenders.

But nobody ever writes him using any of this stuff.

With the upgrades from the Trident, Kamuu, wet suit and armor he has got to be Hulk/sentry type strong. Immune to magic, control of water, weather, energy manipulation. Wow... can you imagine if he were written with all his powers. No wonder he's so arrogant, he knows he's the best.

I think he'd probably be the most powerful non-cosmic character and stronger than a lot of them. You can’t tell me this character doesn’t have the potential to carry a title. I have to agree that he needs an A-list writer that will research or needs one of the old dogs from the 60’s and 70’s that actually know the character.

I'm pretty sure they don't use the things that allow him to communicate with sea life or use any sort of telepathy because that would make him too much like Aquaman.

It'd be cool to see him use the rest of the stuff, though. The Sword of Kamuu sounds cool. Standing up to the Ebony Blade is no small feat.

As for whether he can carry a title--I think he's a good enough character for it, but water-based characters have always had major trouble supporting titles. Aquaman's one of the JLA's Big Seven, but he's had cancellations and relaunches galore while most of the other Big Seven members (except for the Martian Manhunter) have had titles going strong for years, with maybe the occasional crisis in sales. Nowhere near as often as Aquaman's, though.

Aquaman has the whole Superfriends stigma attached to him, and its been hard for him to overcome, a crappy show like Entourage using it as a running gag doesn't help, but unlike Namor, at least people know who Aquaman is.

I quite liked this series. Actually, I loved it. I think it can be very cool

I look for all tradition. In other words...

Namor will stick to his scheduled invasion of surface dwellers.
He will make another bid for Sue, but pretend to be disinterested.
His own people will try and stab him in his sleep.
He will wear one really tacky, fish finned costume.
He and Reed will fight over Sue, then work together against a bigger threat.
Doom will shoehorn his ass in here somewhere. :woot:

There are a few great characters that are great with interaction with others or as cameos. But they can't seem carry their own titles for a long period of time....

Namor
Jonn Jonzz
Aquaman
Plastic Man
Black Canary
Adam Strange
Black Canary
The Creeper

How well is the new Blue Beetle doing?

The new Blue Beetle is easily one of the best comics DC currently publishes.

Is anybody reading the current mini-series??? Man...it's getting intense!! :wow: Namor throws down with Venom!!!

It does not look good...........

Isn't he DC's Namor rip off?

I don't think you can call a guy a wanna-be if he's been around 70 some odd years. And like Corp said, he's still far more well known. Plus he doesn't have tiny wings on his ankles. ;)
