The Official Superman Casting & Discussion Thread

flickchick is one of the most even-keeled posters I've ever had the pleasure of reading here at SHH, so to see this disagreement even taking place, including assumptions made on her opinion, is silly to me.

Manganiello also looks like Byrne's Superman brought to life.

But it's all moot until he secures the role - if/when that happens. So folks need to stop ****ting in their Huggies.

No he does not.

Perhaps but people keep talking like we have to see in the right angle or light to see how great he looks as Superman. The thing is we HAVE seen many pics of Joe Manganiello and they all look average for Superman and none scream Clark Kent. Personally I think there needs to be a balance between Clark and Superman. If Clark isn't there, it will be a tough sell.
That's fair enough. I personally see MORE Clark than Superman in him at this point, as his character in TB is like a Mississippi version of Clark in many ways. Again, he certainly doesn't have MY ideal look for Superman. But he looks like A Superman to me, which Hammer does not - at all - so of the two rumors we've gotten, I vote Joe.

But for the record, my ideal Superman would look nothing like Joe. He'd probably have the face and voice of this guy:

The body of Joe, and the acting ability of Daniel Day-Lewis. Sadly, that guy does not exist. Henry Cavill is my favorite real-life candidate, but we haven't heard anything about him being a real candidate. So right now, all I have to debate is Armie Hammer vs. Joe M, since those are the only two we've actually heard rumors about, and in that contest, Joe wins by a landslide for me.

The fact that we even have to use the "right angles" is exactly why there is a problem with his look.

That's not even getting into his acting, which is subpar IMO anyways.

I've been worrying all this time that if they didn't cast cavill, I wouldn't like whoever they did cast. When I first saw joe I disregarded him as not looking enough like superman, probably because of the beard and the hair, and the some of the expressions he has in photos. Also because of flashbacks to a brown eyed dean cain superman. Yuck.

But after the rumor train has been gaining steam, I've considered him more carefully, and he's my second choice to cavill now, and since joe is also on true blood, I'm thinking cavill doesn't have a chance.

These casting wars continue to be futile. People just see different stuff in different actors.

Accept it, dammit!

Have fun saying that and that Joe is a good actor...:o

I guess they also make wrong casting decisions... what I wonder myself is why would they BOTH make the same mistake with the SAME actor if he's so bad according to you?

I suggest you watch that youtube clip of Joe posted before if you want the very definition of a dull and wooden actor. And apart from that a non-commanding voice. Superman is not only looks, it's also acting like one. Joe doesn't act like one or even have the qualities to act like one. The voice is missing and has a huge thuggish stance. A big no to that.
I've seen Joe in ONE major role, that just happens to resemble Clark Kent in many ways to me, and I find him very convincing and likable in that role. I've seen Hammer in 5 roles, hated him in 4, and tolerated him in 1. I wouldn't call either of them master thespians. I wouldn't have called ANYONE who's ever played Superman a master thespian before (or after) they played the role. I'm just stating who I can see liking in the role, and that's Joe M., not Hammer.

But this whole argument is purely subjective anyway. Neither of us are gonna be swayed by some out-of-context YouTube clips, so that's kinda pointless. And neither is fact simply because certain directors "agree" with you (though what they agree with you on, I'm not sure. For all we know, Fincher cast Hammer because he looked like the 6'5" college-aged Adonises the Winklevosses were supposed to be and which is generally hard to find). And as I've said before, I can't stand Hammer's voice, so I prefer Joe's there, as well. So we should just say "to each their own" and move on.

But "thuggish stance"? Come on, that's just reaching. I can see the director's notes now: "You're standing too thuggish." ;)

Aw, thanks Puckenstein. You're not so bad yourself. :D

Not on TB. And thankfully, that's the only non-Spidey role I've seen him in, so my view of him hasn't been "tainted" as yours apparently has.

He's pretty much playing a sex object on True Blood.

Do you really think his TB character is that deep?

I think it's strange that since Manganiello's name came up again, more people are starting to accept him all of a sudden. Why is that?

Don't rule out Immortals. If/when that starts having test-screenings, it could build enough industry buzz for Cavill to seriously put him into the conversation, since he IS the lead. But that's only if they don't cast this thing in the next month or so (which I admit seems fairly likely).

I think Joe does just fine on TB, and he I have an easy time seeing him as Superman.

Obviously like on ANY film makeup artists will make him look his 100% best.

So far as complaints about him looking like a "meathead, duschebag, thug" etc... That is reaching to the point of slinging mud.

Same with going out of ones way to find and post the least flatering screen caps they can find.

Did I say he was "deep"? I said he was Clark Kent-like: A good-natured, noble gentle-giant who is both humble and fiercely protective of those he cares about, and who doesn't want to be the like the rest of his kind that takes a more predatory stance toward the human race.

And I think he portrays all those attributes convincingly and charismatically.

For two reasons in my opinion.

1) The Nolan/Snyder effect. If they think he's good enough to be chosen, fans automatically become more accepting.

2) Anytime a fan's choice is either ruled out or less likely to be played, you suddenly start seeing them lending support to other choices. It happened after Routh was ruled out, then it happened with Hamm, so on and so forth

Yeah because God forbid people actually try to be optimistic. Or have their opinion(s) swayed.

Yeah, I can understand that. But all we have here are basically more rumors. I think people are just becoming desperate. I know I am, but I dont jump the gun...

i refuse to jump on any bandwagon. He can't be the best choice. I just don't see how he could be. He definitely has his pluses (size, looks like an adult, loves comics.) I don't hate the guy or anything, it just feels like we'd be settling for someone who is merely alright.

Speaking for myself, I have to say it's because I'm accepting the more leaner, and better look that he has, now, versus the older look that I was more exposed to.

This look:

Serves him better than this look:

When it comes to Superman.

"We should just keep discussing Routh, Welling, Cavill, and Bomer I guess."

New suggestions are VERY welcome too. :oldrazz:

Joe for Superman.

There, I said it. Now, can WB please stop wasting time and get this over with?

Again, people are talking about him like he's been cast already.

I dont see Superman in him at all, so if he is indeed being looked at hard, I guess they must be going for something very specific.
