The Official Superman Thread - Part 6

So I know this question has came up a million times before when talking about Superman, I'm gonna ask it again though. Is Superman to powerful? Some of my favorite interpretations of Supes is the classic Superman in the vein of Darwyn Cookes inspiration for Supes . Also growing up with Superman the Animated Series , I've always enjoyed the Superman that wasn't able to move the moon . The Superman that did perform great feats of strength but it showed him struggling to do so . When he was trying to keep a plane from crashing there was that fear that it might not end well , it made him sweat . He would still be Superman because he is doing things no normal mortal could do but he wasn't so powerful that he could pick up a skyscraper and use it like a ball bat . I've always been fond of that Superman. Am I the only one in that crowd ?

That's one aspect I really like about Rebirth Superman. He carries a submarine he's sweating. He fights a giant octopus he's out of breath, he fights Doomsday he's a little scared (though I'd rather his experience with his rogues shine through a little more).

Snyder got that in MoS (catching the oil rig), but not so much in BvS (montage looked too easy).

MOS did show him struggle to a degree , I had forgotten about that. I think my favorite portrayal of Superman was the animated series . He was still Superman and done all these amazing things but he struggled a little with the big stuff. I remember one episode where he was saving a plane and it had this scene that showed him seriously struggling to keep it from hitting a building ( I think ). I like that Superman.

I think this is a dumb question but I am thinking of getting into the new rebirth Superman comics, where do I get started?

I've not read any of it yet (I'm a trade waiter... less expensive, but when you're constantly hearing good things about the stories like this, the waiting part is very hard), but I've been spoiling myself rotten-- DC Convergence, Superman: Lois & Clark, Final Days of Superman, DC Rebirth, Superman Rebirth/Superman and Son. I think that's everything that's relevant, but you could probably jump in from Superman Rebirth/Superman and Son and get clued in from there.

Somebody who's actually read all this stuff please correct me if I'm wrong here.

You can start from where ever you want because due to the sad state of comics in general, one must come to expect a 're-birth/reboot' annually so I repeat: start from where ever you want!

I tell you what, start from superman rebirth and then move on to the superman title and skip action comics because Dan Jurgens's work isn't cutting it IMO.
All you need to know is that the superman from the new 52 (post 2011) has died and the superman from the pre-crisis (1986-2011) has replaced him; this superman is married to lois and has a son called Jonathan! DONE. Now go and get the superman title with issues 1-5.

Covergence: Superman (2 issues), Superman: Lois and Clark (8 issues), Superman Rebirth #1, Superman #1-5, Action Comics #957-961.

Action Comics is a bit decompressed, but since there's already 5 Rebirth issues out that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I skipped Final Days of (New 52) Superman, but I feel like maybe I shouldn't have. Especially since I'm reading New Super-Man and Superwoman. If you do pick up FDoS read that before Superman Rebirth #1.

Thanks guys,I will visit my local comic book shop tommorow and dive right in.:D

Man, I can not begin to describe just how much I'm loving Tomasi's run so far.

This is going to be one of the best.

So last issue Supes got Lois and Jon in a pressurized submersible and flew them to the moon as the homie Bibbo looked on in pride. We pick up where Clark flies the fam to a secret Bat-cave Bruce built on the ****ing moon. Cause he's Batman. Supes figured that he could unleash his fullpower on the Eradicator who's main goal is to purge Jon of his human genome (some real clever social commentary here, very 60's Twilight Zone). Supes gets vacuumed up by E-1000 (Terminator punchline) leaving Superboy and Lois to scurry from a Superman level threat. Talk about stakes!! While inside the Eradicator Kal-El communes with his ancestors on some LOTR ****. Meanwhile as Eradicator starts catching up with the Last Grandson of Krypton Lois smashes into frame armored up in the Hell-Bat. Killer robots should know better than to **** with a mama bear. Obviously Jon's not just going to stand there and let his mom trade shots even though she's in the Batman version of the Hulk-Buster. As things heat up our boy Supes busts out of the Eradicator like Aragorn and the Wraith Army fully powered up (does Supes get a power boost now that he's been merged with millions of Kryptonians?)

All I know is that WBA better get on adapting this into an anime ASAP! Feels real good being a Supes fan.

Superman and Action Comics have been extraordinary since Rebirth. Though I am anxious for the Doomsday arc in Action to end so we get to see how they fold the "new" Superman family into the current supporting cast, as well uncover the mystery behind the powerless Clark Kent.

It nice to have the real Sups back! the series has been strong Rebirth! Jon has made an amazing addition to Clark & Lois.

Ok, y'all have convinced me to give Rebirth Supes a shot.

Rebirth Superman is really good... although I'm starting to lose sight of Eradicator's goals. I guess I don't really understand anything about him.

Tomasi's run is solid, jimenses's superwoman was great but action is rubbish IMO. Dan Jurgens is still stuck in his 90s phase and I think he should stick to art and let someone else do the writing.

I'm surprised that so many prefer Superman to Action Comics. I enjoy both, but I can only take so many Eradicator issues.

To new readers, reading the initial Rebirth book is an easy place to start. It gives the state of the DCU at the time. From there I recommend Superman, Action and maybe Justice League and Superwoman (if you want to learn more about the recently deceased New 52 Superman).

I guess it's because the family dynamic is more present in Superman than it is in Action.

And the Eradicator feels like he's Jon's villain instead of Clark's.

I agree that the family dynamic is what makes Superman a good book, and last issue they all got in on the fight which was fun, but ya I hope Eradicator takes a break after the next issue.

I've been enjoying both Superman and Action Comics. I like the family dynamic in Superman, but the Clark Kent mystery ( and the hooded figure ) has got me intrigued in Action.

Also, picked up Supergirl Rebirth, and I'm so glad to see Kara back with longer hair, a more traditional costume, and with a better attitude. was getting tired of the "angry" 52 Kara.

so, I'm eager to see where her story goes in her book.

Justice League raised all kinds of wtfs this week.

Then we get Post Crisis Superman saying 10,000° (in Earth's core is too hot), even though he's sun-dipped multiple times before. I'm pretty sure his heat vision can hit 10,000° easy LOL.

And this all happens on the same day that Supergirl got her powers back by... being shot into the sun.

I get that Hitch is trying to drive up dramatic tension, but consistency counts man. I'm not even mad at him cause I get it. But other people in the comic book community isn't as forgiving. JL needs to tighten up a little.

-Lois wanting Superman to fully embrace his return as Superman and help during an emergency that he can handle and Lois having second thoughts about sending Superman off on a semi-suicide mission are two different circumstances. Don't see the contradiction.

-Superman's powers have been cut down some from his latter Post-Crisis days since he got to the New 52 universe* (see Lois & Clark miniseries). Post-Crisis Superman was also always the weakest of the versions for most of his career.

*Yes, technically it's the same universe but altered by Dr. Manhattan.

I read Lois & Clark. Post-Crisis Superman and Supergirl were effected by the same thing that Vandal Savage did to New 52 Superman. Once the Truth arc ended Post-Crisis Supes got his full power back. This was confirmed by Dan Jurgens.

I've been loving Action and Superman. Two of my favorites so far from Rebirth. Grabbed Supergirl and Superwoman gonna give them a shot.

I read it. Fortunately, I was braced for the weirdness of this miniseries, having had experience with Batman Odyssey. :cwink:
Ah yes, lucky you. Because when I read the last chapter of the story I thought the writer has taken a drug or something. It wa completely CRAZY. I could not get what was really happening.
Maybe it's a joke. The story, if there's one is beyond my level of comprehension.

And the art was messy IMO. Did someone notice that too : there's no real inking on this book. The lines are still weird and messy.

I don't think I'll fall in the trap again of buying on comicbook just on N.Adams' name.:cmad::o

I love Superman he such a great character. Most of the time though Batman stories just put Superman Story lines to shame. However sense Rebirth Superman and Action comics have had an amazing story line. Batman has kind of Sucked as of lately. Detective comics is more about the side kicks then Batman and I didn't really care for Gotham and Gotham Girl story line. All though it suddenly got interesting in issue 4. Still Superman stuff has been great.

Any one know what story arch will happen after they wrap up Rebirth. I haven't heard anything on that front as of yet.

Superwoman was great. I was quite surprised by it. Supergirl was...meh.
