Also, the WB has an OLD video of Welling from when the show debuted:

Man, he's a hunk of spunk in that picture.

Can someone pass me a fan?

Despite Man of Steel persona, Welling willing and able to tackle everyman roles

As TV's Clark Kent, Tom WellingTom Welling can dodge bullets, but can he dodge the typecasting that has dogged nearly every other actor who has played the Man of Steel?

"It's hard to escape the cape," Christopher Reeve once said. But Welling, who's appeared this year in "The Fog" and "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" and had a recurring role in "Judging Amy""Judging Amy" in 2001, is in a unique position. Since he's been playing Clark Kent this whole time, he's never actually worn the suit.

"I technically haven't played Superman yet," he says. "Once you put on the Superman costume, it's such a strong, iconic image, people have trouble seeing you any other way,"

"In the series, once he's Superman, it's game over," says Smallville co-creator Michael Gough.

Although there was chatter early on about his taking on the bigscreen role of Superman (which ultimately went to newcomer Brandon Routh), there were too many conflicts, scheduling and otherwise for Welling to be cast, says Gough.

"I think if he had ever been offered the movie, it would have killed the series," admits Gough. "I don't think Warner Bros. would have done that on a corporate level. It's not like 'The X-Files,' where you can see the movie and then come back and watch the series. It certainly was never an option for us and I don't really believe it was ever an option for Warner Bros."

Welling, 28, is coy when discussing the negotiations that took place. If he's disappointed at not being the new Superman, he won't say.

"It's such an odd thing to talk about. There were so many issues that would have had to have been dealt with -- scheduling, the future of the show -- for it to have happened."

A sixth season hasn't been officially announced yet, but he does admit, "They're preparing for it. We're at a good place right now. We still have some issues to work out with the characters."

"It's hard being a TV actor and working around the schedule," says co-creator Miles MillarMiles Millar of Welling, who's committed to "Smallville""Smallville" 10 months out of the year. "He's chosen (his film projects) pretty well."

"I did 'The Fog' in a fog," Welling laughs. "They shot for a month before I got there and it was shot at night and really fast. For 'Cheaper by the Dozen 2,' I was only available for 10 days, so they could have just cast someone else in the role, so I'm very grateful they didn't. My schedule was just so ridiculous."

So far, Welling's flair for comedy has been a fairly well-kept secret, says Gough.

"He could be a terrific romantic comedy lead. You see it sometimes when he and Lois have scenes together, that sort of Cary Grant quality that's very light and funny. But you never see it in Clark Kent because he's just too earnest."

Welling, a former model who graduated from high school in Michigan, is philosophical about the current status of his extracurricular career.

"You have to pay your dues and be patient. And I've got a pretty good day job here."

Nice article... Thanks for that! (you got a mention on TW.org, btw) :D

That's been there for a while by the look of it, and there's not even any confirmation that the film will finally be made at all, nevermind any confirmation of who the cast will be.

I'm still checking around, but this (for the time being) looks a bit unlikely. Half of the cast that are listed on there have come from fan posters and the like. In other words, they're cast members people would like to see.

I was wondering if you were going to say something...

:D

I think that would be an awesome role for Tom, even if they may be beating the proverbial dead horse with the franchise. I'm assuming that's all very preliminary at this point.

What the...

Okay, that Die Hard 4 rumor has serious wings (pun intended). It's currently propagating through the Net like wildfire. This reminds me of Muscles' 15 minutes of fame last year with his SR "scoop." ;)

Can somebody (Hulk?! :p anybody?) PLEASE debunk this rumor before I have an aneurysm? Or better yet, CONFIRM the bloody thing so I can die happy. Heh. Get it? Die happy? *giggle* I kill myself. LOL

Seriously though, of all the films (besides Superman/Smallville DUH!) that I would have liked to see Welling cast, this one would be quite near the top of the list. Starring along side Bruce yippy-kai-yay Willis? OMG! That's like... um.... [thinking]... gosh, I'm at a loss for metaphor.

That's right folks; Pat can't think of anything better right now. The earth has just cracked.

I just looked up how old Willis is because I'm not sure about seeing Tom play his son. But if we can believe IMDB, Willis is 51 next month.. so I guess it's not inconceivable. The Die-Hard movies aren't exactly a favorite of mine, but they certainly are a lot of fun and I'd love seeing Tom in that kind of big money action film.

I hate to get my hopes up though. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Oh, absolutely. Agewise, he could *easily* be Willis' son. In fact, in literal years, Welling was eleven when the first film unspooled in '88. McClane's kids were seen in the background in one of the scenes. They were a little younger than eleven, but McClane's "son" in a fourth Die Hard film doesn't have to be portrayed as being 29 (or 30) either. If they make him 25 for example - a good age for this character I think - that means he would have been about six or seven when Gruber took the Nakatomi tower in the first flick. That's just about right.

The Die Hard films (well, the first and third one anyway) were VERY entertaining. The third one was an adapted script, originally titled "Simon Says." I guess it made the rounds in Hollywood until somebody discovered it and thought it would make a good Die Hard film. Gosh, did it ever.

The more I think about this rumor, the more plausible it gets, but that might just be my wishful thinking. Bruce Willis - Unbreakable & Sin City - possibly a comic book fan *ahem* and might be familiar with SV. Was on That 70's Show and probably knows Ashton CBTD Kutcher... I dunno. I'm trying not to get too excited. Every time I do, somebody pops my bubble. :(

I know that Bruce Willis used to be a die hard Lois & Clark fan. So its quite possible that he is also a Smallville fan.

How old is John Schneider? He's younger than Bruce Willis, right? It's plausible that Bruce Willis (or his character rather) is old enough to play Tom Welling's character's dad...but in they certainly look nothing alike. Either way, I'm a huge Die Hard fan. Loved it back in the day. Hope if they revive it, they have a decent script. And I love the idea of Tom playing the son; especially if there's a lot of action involved for his character.
