Yeah, but is there something about Clark you'd like to discuss that makes you wonder where the Clark thread is?
Oh hon, I could talk about Clark all day. *ahem* LOL ;)

J/K

It was just a passing thought. I looked through the history here and see there are quite a few Clark-themed threads, so if it's a big enough topic - like the birthing matrix/phantom zone concept recently touched on - then we can create a new thread for it if folks want to discuss. That particular subject has already been brought up, so I'm just using it as an example. I personally don't care either way. We still have fun here regardless of where we post. :D

True...

Now, I did think that was the Phantom Zone but you said it was the birthing Matrix... what is that?

(I'm not totally up on the comic book stuff, not having read much since I was a teen.)

I'm not completely up on it either, but I'll give it a shot...

My understanding is, the Birthing Matrix is kind of like an incubator for Kryptonian new born. It was also where Jor-El placed Kal-El for his journey to Earth. The ship brought him here, but the BM kept him alive, so to speak. The Phantom Zone, on the other hand, is another place in a different dimensional plane, or something along those lines. It's where criminals are incarcerated.

Now I'm SURE Lokmon or Sage can explain it better than that, and probably tweak my poor descriptions while they're at it. LOL

TW threads discuss the actor. A Clark thread would be better for discussing the character. But it's no biggie; this is working just fine for everything. Besides, I kind of like having one central place to go for everything that doesn't warrant its own thread, but is interesting nonetheless. This thread is perfect for that.

But... Tom Welling IS Clark Kent!!! ;)

You pretty much nailed it on the head. The birthing matrix was intro'd in John Byrne's post-Crisis "Man of Steel" origin back in 1986. Though, Birthright throws that continuity for a loop. Who knows? DC seems to be on the verge of resetting its continuity again so Kal-El may have yet another tweaked origin. We shall see.

I just finished the article. He is seeming more selfpossed and dedicated. Here they are at year 4 and he still cares so much about the show overall I think that's impressive they are lucky to have such a dedicated star. How many times are actors usually checked out and ready to move on. Also he cares so much about the character I could have seen him having issues with the movie role if it wasn't character driven. It is interesting to wonder what he was programmed by Jor-el it can't be anything near the FOS knowledge I'm glad to know it will come up later.

I hope that was a heavily sarcastic *sniff*... or are you a Clana fan?

For the most part, yes I am. But I agree with some of the sentiments that TW and KK have expressed in interviews about how nice it is to see Lana get to actually have "fun" and laugh and tease a bit in a relationship. I think Jason is very likable, which is a credit to Jensen Ackles who does a great job playing him. That was not an easy role to walk into.. but I think he's really done well. Now we'll wait and see how long this lasts.

I still like the idea of Lana being Clark's girl-next-door first love for the duration of his time left in Smallville. Knowing ahead of time that Clark and Lana are just not meant to be in the long run, makes me really want them to have "something" for the time they do have. In a weird way, it's part of my show loyalty, to like Lana with Clark, as opposed to Lois. I like Lois, but she's his future, and this is Smallville Time. :)

I just wish things would have been handled better regarding their relationship and her character development (or lack thereof) over the past few seasons.

I agree Serene I don't see why she couldn't have been his highschool girlfriend I think there would have been more drama in an actual relationship than the will they won't they crap. That being said I wish they hadn't made Lois Chloe's cousin because now they have no shot for even a short term relationship. Of course I'm more intrested in the mythology but I never understood the whole show is over once there's a relationship mentality.

The whole "the show is over once there's a relationship mentality" comes from Moonlighting, Remington Steele, Cheers, and Lois & Clark all losing steam once their romantic leads got into bed together... Cheers was able to continue because they got rid of Diane and brought in Rebecca.

Unfortunately, the other shows didn't have an out and all ended shortly after their leads got married.

History speaks louder than Clana fans, I guess.

Excpt that Smallville isn't based on romantic tension but Superman growing up and trying to be human I think a girlfriend fits into that. I'm not a Clana fan bu I adored Obsession BTW I forgot to tape the Carson interview last night I am so mad at myself!

Personally, I'm not sure it woulda hurt all that much but even Al Gough has referred to the so-called Moonlighting affect on a series. Perhaps the wedding of the two leads on the show was more a symptom of the problem that caused the demise of the show, and less a cause.

They were running of storylines long before Maddie and David tied the knot...

Lois & Clark sorta had the same problem...

I dunno, I was personally getting sick of the will they or won't they dance Clark and Lana were doin' and am glad that's finally over.

Why the hell is above Tom on the list?

I guess he's cute enough, but Hot? Hardly.

The list might just be a popularity thing. I also wonder about the Canadian factor. How many of these celebs are from Canada or work there? Just wondering.

Zing's website once had a poll (yeah, one of *those* polls) where Welling obliterated the competition in the most heinous of ways LOL. But Zing thought that, beyond the SV/Superman connections (I reiterate, it was one of "those" polls), fans voting in Canada might have had even more devotion to Welling simply because his show lensed there. [shrugs]

Is it on here in America? By ET do you mean the E! network?

Here's a little quote from Gail Simone (read Birds of Prey!) about her feelings regarding Superman (BTW, she's just been tapped -- with John Byrne pencilling -- as the new writer for Action Comics!):

Looking at the character a little more closely, Simone said that there’s one thing, in her view that has to make it into any Superman story to make it a “Superman” story. “Humanity. But I can’t help but point out that Clark is hot. Seriously, it’s Superman. He’s just dead sexy and he isn’t even trying. From any angle, he’s the good stuff.

“But, oh yeah, definitely, we’ll stick that humanity thing in there somewhere, probably towards the back.”

This isn't really TW related, but it does go back to a discussion a few months ago when some people were complaining about some of the female posters attraction to Welling and how it disrespects the character.

How is finding Superman sexy detracting to the character?

Musta been a man that said that...

That's hypocritical. Men usually have something to say about how hot Lana is (or Lois) and never does the fact that men are attracted to her come up as being disrepectful of the character.

I remember that it was a big argument agaisnt Welling that Superman isn't supposed to be a sex symbol. There were these long psuedo intellectual posts. It was stupid to say the least.

Welling-basher rationalization... Pure and simple.

Looks do matter....not as much as some people tend to hang on it though.

I think HWSNBN is a good looking guy, just like I think TW is a good looking guy....but that doesn't make or break anything for me.

ps Superman wasn't ever meant to be a sex symbol imo. Good looking? Yes.
Have women throwing undergarments at the screen like it's a KISS concert? I surely hope that isn't what they are going for! ;)

IF that's what they're going for, with HWSNBN in the lead they're going to be disappointed.

Superman is Super in everyway, he IMO should resemble a greek god. Smart, strong, good looking, he should have it all. People scream his name when they see him because they are so in awe by him. His presence, his power his nobility. This guy is king of all superheroes.

ET = Eastern Time. I doubt it will air in the States, however. Maybe on the border where the broadcast frequencies overlap.

WAIT! John Byrne???!!! Or Ed Benes? Don't give me a heart attack here Lokmon. Byrne is my fav!!

Oh, I dunno 'bout that. Look at what she said. Since when has CLARK been "sexy" in any Superman comic you've read? Superman, yes, but Clark?

Very, very interesting statements indeed.

You'd be surprised, Pickle. At its core, this is entertainment, pure and simple. Superman is also an event film, which endeavors to attract the widest audience possible - and hopefully get them to come back for repeat showings. I know why *I* saw S:TM four times in theaters, and I can tell ya it *wasn't* to see the FX. ;)

SMMV (Singer's Mileage May Vary.)

Neither was Wolverine. Welcome to the 21st Century. Get comfy; we're gonna be here for a while. :D

Oh, that's so '70's. LOL

That's what popcorn is for, doncha know? Tomatoes too, if he's really a stinker. :p

Yeah, I thought CR was it when that first film came out... Prolly the only reason I saw it as much as I did too, but then again Dad was a big fan. He took us to see it several times.

Yep. You read me correctly Pat. JOHN F'n BYRNE is pencilling Action Comics w/ Gail Simone (whose BoP is one of the best superhero comics on stands today)!

Yeah, I too noticed she mentioned CLARK being sexy. Who knows? Maybe she is going for a SV-esque interpretation. Coz on the show, Clark is the good looking guy who has girls practically throwing themselves at him. Maybe she'll play around w/ that angle...?
