The Dark Knight Rises The Official "What Do YOU Want in the Sequel?" Thread

Ok, after seeing the Cape and the Coon episodes of South Park, I felt the need to say that I love the Bale Batvoice more than ever and I want it to be in TDKR just the way it was.

Well, for one thing, Batman is not a martial artist.

Well, maybe not in the strictest sense of comic book terms. He's not Shang Chi; a guy whose main bag is martial arts. What Batman does as a fighter is not as emphasized or narrated in comics the way it was years ago (where references would be made to different fighting forms like Judo, Kung Fu and Karate based on a writers limited knowledge). Batman fights, he is using fighting techniques that he has learned and mastered. Batman is a lot of things including a man who is proficient in several forms of martial arts and fighting techniques.

I agree. I finally went touring around where they shot some scenes downtown and I was shocked to see that my school was near the bank scene location :)

I just came across this picture..

..Holy. CRAP. I want this in TDKR.

Edit: ..Is this a screenshot from Arkham City?

That's how I felt too. :funny:

Mysterion ftw.

Heh!

And besided, it's mentioned thrice in the Knightfall saga that the Batvoice is hoarse, grating and grovelling.

I guess I really need to re-read that! Seems like I forgot a lot of awesome things.

Also in one of the first issues of Morrison's Batman run, Alfred is telling Bruce how he has been using his Batman voice as Bruce, basically telling him that he's gotten lost in Batman. I dont remember exactly how he described it, but it pretty much implied that he sounded like Bale.

Maybe Bale's voice isnt perfect but i think that the growl fits Batman the best. I love Kevin Conroy and despite that Arkham City trailer being SUPER AWESOME (see below), when Batman interrogates that mercenary i dont buy it that much. He should have sounded more monstrous. I bet that if Conroy tried to growl he'd produce the perfect Bat-voice.

I honestly have felt like Conroy's been slumming it for the past couple of years. His performance in Arkham Asylum felt very lazy at times. He was just...talking. It sounded too relaxed.

See, to me, Baleman makes everyone his little b**ch. Conroy reeked of atmosphere, though.

I'm about 50/50 on the Bale voice, but what I do actually love about it is that it does sound forced. That's usually an insult, but not here. I like that its not some magical transformation; Bale often reminds you that what you're watching is just a man putting on a voice, reminds you of the man inside the monster.

Good example of this is "Someone knows where he is!" in the clip you provided. It's like his voice is cracking. As much as he tries to put on this monstrous front, he's so frustrated and tired.

Of course not every interrogation needs to be about shouting. There is a scene in the Superman/Batman animated movie where Batman catches a Russian thug and it goes like this:

- Tell me everything.
In russian:
- You dont understand what i m saying and even if you did i wouldnt speak"
Batman speaks russian and calmly but threateningly says:
- I do and you will.
Batman's shadow is cast on the thug and the classic BTAS music "DA-DA-DAAA" is heard.

Its not just awesome because batman is scary, but because he's like "oh you speak russian. I am Batman so i know every language in the world."
**** yeah DC Animated Universe!!!

Wait, isn't that from the start of Hush, as well?

Yeah sometimes its not that great. But with Flass.... Man did i have a nerdgasm. Just watch this and tell me if you dont feel like Batman is about to poke his eyes out and eat them.

I dunno, its been a long time since i read it.

EDIT: I FOUND IT, I FOUND IT!!! Skip to the 5:00 minute mark. Also, watch the second scene of the video where Batman appears to the professor. Also at the 8:30 mark its probably my favourite scene where he shows that he knows everyone's identity. He's the goddamn Batman!

Definitely a tribute to Hush. For me, nothing beats the 2 interrogation scenes in BB and TDK, though.

Funny, that's precisely what I hated about his turn in TDK. Bale's approach under the mask is purely "Batman-mode", so the more genuine and human moments don't have any poignancy on me because there's always that barricade. Like when he says sorry to an unconscious Harvey in the hospital, or when he goes insane on Joker in the interrogation room. Both moments that would seem to peel away the masquerade and give us a look at Bruce, but doesn't have a complete effect because the forced voice is in tact.

His level of tone and delivery with Flass and Falcone was pretty ideal for this type of approach. It was otherworldly enough to sound jarring and almost inhumane, but not ridiculous to the degree that it pulled you out of the scene and make you realize this guy is putting on an act.

I really hope they take more from BB in this regard.

I think it was intentional. Remember at the party, when Bruce renders Dent unconscious how he uses the Batvoice while not in costume? I think all those where subtle ways to show the Batman persona gaining ground.

Yeah, I love that...

I've always seen Bale as having 3 "Batman" voices;

I. "Loud/Angry Growl" for interrorgation of criminals
II. "Main Growl" for allies that do not know his identity and close-up talking with criminals
III. "Low Growl/Keaton-esque" for allies like Rachael, Fox, Alfred.

I didn't find it to be all that intact. You can hear a difference in his voice throughout those moments, where he sounds genuinely shaken or exhausted or his emotions are getting the better of him and the voice loses it's consistency, gets more scratchy and unthreatening and slurred, as if it's straining him to keep it up under all the pressure he's under. This shows a lot during the interrogations, the finale with the Joker, and when he's talking to Gordon after Harvey's death.

Compare the voice where he's talking to the Batman wannabes and Scarecrow to the rest of the film, and you can see the voice evolve as the situation bares down on him further. That was my impression, anyway.

Yes! I loved that touch.
