I just can't see Whiplash... after the guy nearly wins an Oscar? Maybe it's Titanium Man like Kendrell said. Who knows?

The CHUD writer who wrote about the Downey video made a good point - maybe by "some semblance of both" Downey meant both confirming & denying, rather than a combo villain of Whiplash/CD. After re-watching the video, that is the vibe I get from his answer.

Here's another interview with Downey on the subject:

"I know that we've been talking about it a bunch," Robert spilled to "Extra" about Rourke's rumored role. "As long as we can make it a really great role, then I would urge him to continue considering it. We'd love to have him and we'll see how it goes." Rourke is nominated for Best Actor for "The Wrestler," while Downey is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for "Tropic Thunder."

Not really. He's a Marvel villain, though usually an X-Men baddie of course. And he's a mix of Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash. I do think it would be odd, in as much as he's not a classic Iron Man villain, but not impossible.

Hehe.... yep, that's me.

Well, it is my view. I may be wrong, of course. Although there was someone asking suspicious questions about Omega Red on these boards a short while ago.

Well, it would extra cool to have villains from anywhere in the Marvel gallery, like Dr Doom, but Omega Red IMO is way too heavily related to Wolverine/X-Men...

Rourke does look the part though, and I can't think of any other characters that the producers would say "we need someone to play this character... how could that be? Wait! Mickey Rourke!"

Ok, I've been thinking a little, about how Omega Red is hardly related to Iron Man, blah blah, and then I thought of a really possible way to have him in the movie, a really relevant way...

The super soldier program...

We practically know that the super soldier program is mentioned as prominent as flashback scenes in IM2... What if the reason the super soldier program is mentioned, is because the russian version is brought to the table?

Seriously, after thinking that, I'm ready to believe Omega Red is possible...

Is it possible that Fox already owns the rights to him. They own the rights to the contained X-Men universe which Omega Red is arguably a part of and was shown on Stryker's computer.

I think considering Wolverine might be a whole new franchise I think Id rather see Omega Red go toe to toe with Wolvie than IM

Yeah, Fox has rights to all of X-Men related characters, so an agreement would be required. Which is not impossible, and it would be good for Fox to have their movies considered part of Marvel Studios' movieverse

Right, but that sounds like a lot of time and effort to get a character that has zero ties to the main character who already has baddies readily available

As well as putting faith in Fox, who has little evidence of deserving good faith from anybody.

And thinking Fox would invest in the Marvel movieverse, a project that has yet to prove successful. Iron Man was a hit and probably will continue to be but the fate of Captain America, Thor, and Avengers is still hard to see but Id say pretty risky since they are trying to intertwine them more directly than Iron Man originally was

Yeah, as much as I would want it to, Omega Red isn't happening in this movie.

I imagine Rourkes character being an combination or Whiplash/CD or Whiplash in a tech suit.

I think it's as simple as this:

Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell are in talks to star as the villains in "Iron Man 2," being directed by Jon Favreau.

Marvel has been keeping a very tight lid on the script for the sequel, being written by Justin Theroux, but it is known that Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes Whiplash, a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils.

Rockwell would play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Anthony Stark, AKA Iron Man, being played by a returning Robert Downey Jr.

Rourke and Rockwell would be joining a cast that also includes the returning Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, who is replacing Terrence Howard, making for one eclectically cast summer blockbuster.

Another part -- one for Stark's assistant Natasha -- is still open.

The project is eyeing a spring start in Manhattan Beach. Paramount will release the movie May 7, 2010.

Rourke, repped by ICM, is making the best of the accolades he is receiving for his heart-wrenching turn in "The Wrestler." On top of this big-budget movie, the actor, who will next be seen in "The Informers," just joined the cast of "The Expendables," an action movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren.

If Rockwell's deal makes, it would mark a rare studio appearance for the actor, who is best known for his indie dramas. Gersh-repped Rockwell recently starred as a sex-addicted con man in "Choke" and an estranged husband in "Snow Angels." He can currently be seen in the political drama "Frost/Nixon."

This was reported on 1/07/09. At the same time, Variety was reporting just that Rouke and Rockwell would be playing villains and speculated who they may be but never said who those villains would be with as much certainty as this original THR article did.

Recently, Sam Rockwell confirmed he is playing Justin Hammer. I think THR had everything right from the beginnning. Plus, RDJ clearly says that the reporter is incorrect when he asks if Rourke is playing CD. But then RDJ says he can niether confirm nor deny when the reporter brings up Whiplash.

It seems to me we are getting Whiplash.

I could live with Whiplash, although he's no where near my favorite Iron Man villain. I'd put Hammer, Mandarin, Madame Masque, Iron Monger, CD, TM, Spymaster, Ghost, Blizzard and Radioactive Man ahead of Whiplash. But they can still make a great movie with him, I'm confident.

With Rourke seemingly playing Whiplash... and the alleged smaller payday, and the fact that he says that he wants to do Sly's movie at the same time... I conclude that it must be a smaller role (perhaps not, but Whiplash is a HUGE let down compared to the possibility of CD... not to mention any notion of the Mandarin).
