Oh, he's not silly? Then he has data to backing up his numbers? He must, because the only way for the statement "40% of Batfans are hateful people" to not be silly would be for the person making the claim to have verifiable data demonstrating that 40% of Batfans are, in fact, hateful people, data demonstrating that non-Batfans are hateful in a lowe percentage, and, of course, data demonstrating that their Batfanism is, in fact, what makes them hateful. There is probably other necessary data, also. Since we both know he does not have it, then yes, silly is the correct word.
Or, more simply: a person who says "This imaginary percentage of people who like a certain character are totally hateful" is being ridiculous. This is misguided at best; complaining that those other fanboys are just so terrible, and pretending that pulling imaginary percentages out of thin air can lend him the veil of legitimacy.
I don't suppose I'll ever understand the frame of mind that suggests the other fanboys are better or worse than your own particular group. I suppose comic book fandom--along with sports fandom--is one of the few arenas where mindless, unfounded tribal hatred is still the norm. Some maturity would be nice.
