Interview: Zack Snyder Says ‘Superman’ Will Be His Most Realistic Movie Yet

Mar 20, 2011 by Roth Cornet
Zack Snyder gives us some insight into the visual style he will implement in ‘Superman: Man Of Steel’ and the training that Henry Cavill will endure in preparation for his portrayal of the iconic superhero.

Earlier today we had the opportunity to speak with Zack and Deborah Snyder at the Los Angeles press junket for his new film Sucker Punch(stay tuned for our coverage of that event).

In the midst of our exploration into the world of fantasy and action that is Sucker Punch, we were able to ask Snyder a bit about his upcoming addition to the Superman franchise, Superman: Man Of Steel.

When asked if he would be utilizing some of the dynamic and innovative visual techniques we have come to expect from him as a filmmaker, Snyder replied that:
I think the visual style of “Superman,” though I can’t say for certain as it’s early, but I kind of feel like — and I did say to the studio – that what’s cool for me and interesting, and odd, is that “Superman” is probably going to be the most realistic movie I’ve ever made. It’s kind of fun that the most realistic movie I probably will make is a movie called “Superman.” Which shows how crazy my other movies are. Because I guess for him to be credible… He gets more credible by the reality that you can bring to him, you know emotionally, and visually, I think.
When asked what sort of physical preparation Henry Cavill would face for his role as Clark Kent/Superman, given the months of training the young ladies of Sucker Punch went through in preparation for that film, Snyder replied laughingly, “Henry’s gonna be hitting the iron pretty hard.”

Snyder’s wife, Deborah, stressed that “he’s working right now.” In fact, the moment they hired Henry they had him meet with Mark Twight of Gym Jones (who had trained all of the actors in 300) and Damon Caro, who does all the fight training.“They’ve put him on a plan,” she continued, “he’s started in England and as of April 1st we have him full time with us for all that training.”

From the sounds of it, the man of steel may be a larger, and more combative, version of the character than we have seen to date.

sweet henry will be jacked and this can put to rest people thinking superman is gonna be too stylzed

I wish he'd explore that realism comment a bit more. Nolan's influences are showing with that term and I'm wondering if he's applying the same sensibilities.

For all the fantasy and over-the-top visuals Snyder has shown in his films, I'd still say his directorial debut in 'Dawn of the Dead' was pretty damn "real" on it's own right. So saying Superman will be even more real, is a little puzzling.

Is it me or the more and more Snyder talks the more i feel he was the perfect director for Superman

I'm intrigued by his comment but it sounds good to me at the moment.

But Dawn of the Dead was a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies. I'm pretty sure what Snyder means is that what makes Superman extraordinary is the ordinary world he's surrounded by. So the people will be normal, work by day, use their time to themselves by night, as opposed to hiding from/being zombies, being part of a 300-strong army, living in a world where superheroes are a common thing. There's our world, then there's Superman.

You could argue the same of mechanics of the supernatural taking place in an ordinary world, with DOTD. The survivors are real, their actions and emotions are all human, the setting is exactly like ours. The outside factor, of course, being the vast amount of zombies overtaking everything.

glad to hear about Snyder going for a more realistic approach when it comes to the visuals this time around. even though Dawn of the Dead was pretty realistic, the colors were still either saturated or desaturated and it still felt pretty stylized.

i hope this means that they'll be going with a high class effects company...

I was just thinking that. I was thinking, "S**t, this guy hasn't said or done one thing that makes me question him as director." Every single thing I've seen and heard from him so far shows me he understands and cares about this universe that he's inherited. Right now I couldn't imagine anyone better. Let's hope it continues.

i thought they did a good job in watchmen other than a few iffy Manhattan shots

Can't wait for him to start shooting this. He may put Cavill on that 300 workout plan, geez.

Haha! It'll be called "The Superman: MOS Workout" when it's made public and they see the results. :cwink:

I am now more than ever eager to see this movie. At the same time admittedly nervous... He's saying all the right things and (so far) making good decisions. Maybe because I've been disappointed so many times its hard for me to believe it all. I will say this... I never felt this good about SR at any time before or during its production. Ever!

Rhythym and Hughes to the RESCUE... greatest effects company ever

actually I hope Digital Domain get this one...
