is that after it comes out, there's going to be all these poser 'watchmen fans' and everyones going to be all like "oh ya, watchmen kicks ass". Its going to get completely commercialized. It's just like now everyone is an iron man fan, and everyones a batman fan. But even with those, people who don't read comics knew who those characters were. But watchmen has always completely belonged to the hardcore comic fans (i was going to call us something else, but i don't want to piss people off). Is anybody else worried about this?

Eh, the more the merrier? It was bound to happen. In any case we "true fans" will always know one another by how we talk about Watchmen.

You know, I'm sure that back when the comic itself came out there were many readers who were of the "Yeah that's badass. Woo!" variety. But I'm sure that when the movie came out, there will be that segment who will appreciate Watchmen on that deeper level, and become "true fans" themselves. The same thing will occur with the movie as with the comic, but on a broader scale, I think.

You said it Arivin! We can't let them in our clubhouse! They might have cooties!

People who don't want things they like to gain popularity are just pretentious.

The only thing that will be annoying are people who watched The Incredibles and Heroes and claim Watchmen just ripped them off. Other than its great to see more people read the book.

but star! It was our club house first!!

I havent been a fan for long...just read the book in fact...I do hate posers...but am I a poser for being told that this was the best graphic novel...reading it...and being blown away and now completely excited to see it on the big screen?...Just kinda wanna know what you guys think of me after reading this thread

****in' Poseur!

You can't have it both ways, you can't have it be both financially successful and not have people become aware of it due to the movie. People being turned on to Watchmen is a great thing, maybe some see the movie then go out and buy the book.

I actually don't care.. When the movie comes out people will see it, some will get the book and they'll become fans, there is nothing at all wrong with that, infact thats almost exactly how most of us became fans anyways minus the movie part we heard or saw the book picked it up and became fans and I'm willing to bet arivin just read the book with-in the last two/three months.

Face it guys, fans are good and we're not some special cult group, we weren't born being fans of the Watchmen we found out about it somehow and then read it, which will happen with more people once the movie comes out. I'll admit that I wasn't there to read the script for the GN right after the ink dried on Alan Moore's type-writer its times we all do the same.

That's what I'm worried about as well.

For Truth.

It's not like Watchmen is this sacred parchment that can only be read by a select few, and only before the movie comes out. I say bring on the new fans!

The hard part will be getting them to read the comic afterwards. For someone who's never read a comic or hasn't read one since they were 10, a graphic novel that thick is pretty damn intimidating.

yes. but i've already started seeing it less and less at the library. I swear its been taken out everytime I stop by. So that's at least a good sign, people are reading it!

What a ridiculously elitist sentiment.

Who cares...?

Kind of a pointless worry, I'd say. It reminds me of the scene in THE SIMPSONS where Professor Frink takes that popmobile from the kids and says "You won't enjoy it on as many levels as I do".

:lmao: I remember that one. And I agree with you: pointless worry

Hi everyone nice to meet you all, this is my first post

True I may be Commercialized for a point in time and it will be every where with every tom dick and harry (for lack of a better term,)
but think about it, a year after the movie is out, the people who were just passing through the wow I like it phase will be onto other things flowing with the time.
Though this movie will shed light to The Watchmen's existence and thus give those truly interested a love affair for the real deal..
I can see why Alan Moore wants to stay as far away from this production as possible

Welcome!

..and, hopefully, if the movie's more than alright, we get some other good movies (based on graphic novels)

More fan$ means a better chance for the studio to push for a failed Watchmen sequel that doesn't even exist ...
Now THAT'S what I can't wait for! ;)

Arghh can you imagine that..? I remember suggesting (sarcastically) that they would produce a sequel out of Rorschach's journal

Pleasure to be here.

And I have to admit that if i never had seen the movie From Hell I wouldn't have gotten into THAT graphic novel first..... that ones a mind blower. so sometimes seeing the movie leads to better things

I know when I first picked up the watchmen (my brother would troll comic shops and dragged me along) It was awesome to me. my first thoughts when my bro told me they were making a movie were -Michael Bay don't you dare sully this epic..

Though I was rocked when V for vendetta came out, then I started to read that graphic novel and started to boo at the movie

making a movie out of something that use to be written in comic/graphic novel form can honestly go either way Im just hoping the fad passes soon enough for the commercialization of the movie to blow over

I don't get what you're trying to say. Being a fan of something doesn't have to mean a life-long devotion to it. Do you expect people to not "be onto other things"? It's not like everybody who read the comic in the 80s has kept reading it over and over ever since that first time.

what i was trying to say is that yes some (even me) are worried about posers. True you dont have to be a life long fan, but theres a difference between a fan and someone who thought the movie kicked ass because they got to see violent acts and action scenes
