The Piracy Threat...?

Ok, another question for you anti-downloaders, are you just casual listener of music, or are you hardcore listeners. Because it is really crazy to me how against burning copies of music you guys are. In my life it's really no big deal for my friend to come up to me and say, "Dude, I found this new band, they're totally awesome, I'll burn you a copy." Then I listen to it, if I don't like it, it'll end up on my car floor. If I do like it, I'd buy the album and maybe another one of theirs, maybe even see a show if they come to town.

I'm picturing you guys having someone hand you a burned copy and you go, "NO, GET IT AWAY FROM ME, AHHHH".

Having just read the story now, Sony did step over the line and then they did stop producing CD's with that software on them.

I'm more on the hardcore listener side. If a friend hands me a burned copy I won't yell "NO, GET IT AWAY FROM ME, AHHHH!" I will give it a listen, if I like it I will buy that bands album/demo. If I don't like it, I will give it back to my friend or throw it away(if he/she gave it to me to keep).

I'm just not the one that will be doing the downloading. I buy the albums/movies that I know I will like and leave it to friends to waste money on albums they don't know about. Then I get their opinions on those "new" bands to see if I should buy or not.

Not really...all the content falls under the same laws and regulations. I can't comment too much on the CD side of things, I'm not into music all that much, I own like 10 cd's if that....well the DVD doesnt have the directors commentary, and ive seen the movie on sale in Blockbuster for like 10 bucks pre-viewed, so I might replace it.....

I don't bootleg music, but if I did, I wouldn't have a problem with doing it. Basically, I'd do it if I don't feel like going to a CD store.

On the other hand, I'd never even think of bootlegging a movie nor buying a bootleg movie. The quality is way too damn bad.

Casual listener, but I'm a big movie watcher so thats why most of my argument is on the DVD portion of it. I don't think it matters too much either way, the frequency in which you listen to music doesn't negate the legality of it. Its not like some judge is going to rule that because you are such a big music fan you arent responsible for what you did....

That's another reason why I don't download aside from it being illegal.

I like my DVD's with all the pretty wrapping and covers and such....commentary as well

I'm not an anti-music downloader. I just don't do it. If a friend some burned copies or whatever, I could care less. That's fine. The reason I don't download music is that I'm not a hardcore listener in the slightest. I usually only listen to what's on the radio or tv music channels. But if I were a hardcore music listener, I'm sure I would be file sharing and such.

Extremely hardcore......I listen to music likely in excess of 5 to 6 hours a day....and I've never actually had a friend hand me a burned cd....I'm almost 100% sure they buy theirs as well

Anyone remember when the RIAA tried to sue the creators of the first mp3 player back in the late 90's? I dont recall who it was but I do remember that they lost

What if you read about the band in a magazine and it sounds like something you might like. You wouldn't downloaded them to hear them first?

It's all about quality for me, thats why I don't do it. Sad to say, doesn't bother me if it's legal or not. I could care less about legalities when the crime isn't psychically or mentally(lol) hurting someone. It's the reason I run so many red lights when the coppers aren't around.

Hell, I am a Pirate. Yo ho!

Hope the FBI isn't following my IP right now.

I'm saying they buy a CD and burn a copy for you to listen to.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but so do I :).....there was no better feeling in the world back in the day, running your thumb nail down the opening of a brand new LP :)

I think both the MPAA and the RIAA need to seriously re-evaluate how they do things, but I do also think that both the music and the movie industry needs some sort of governing body....to make sure that laws are being followed, that safety standards are adhered to.....

Well people are hurt by this, and as far as running red lights. It's only stupid when you hit someone, or they hit you? smaaart.

not at all....love opening my new dvd's when I do buy them....

I'm saying they buy a CD and burn a copy for you to listen to.

Nope, never happened....they have advised me of bands they thought I might like, let me listen to their cd etc....but no they've never burned me one......I guess that doesn't mean they don't burn....just I'm unaware of it...

Dude I want the real thing....and if I'm unsure of whether I'd like it or not there's a myriad of ways to find out without resorting to stealing it and dude you know that .......

Who is psychically or mentally hurt by this?

I only run 'em when I see the area is clear and no cops are around.:cwink:

Sorry, I'm a cold hearted bastard. Let's just say that I'd steal from an armored truck if no one was around and I could get away with it.

When a record labels cd sales drop dramatically in a 3 or 4 year span due to downloading/cd burning jobs get cut....Universal music cut about 2,000 jobs due to that

What if you read about the band in a magazine and it sounds like something you might like. You wouldn't downloaded them to hear them first?

No, because as I said before my friends are the ones that will buy an album that they think they will like. I hear it through them to decide if I will buy it also. If that doesn't happen and it's not a band that gets radio play I will brake down if I hear enough word of mouth and take a chance dropping the cash on their album.

Wow, you're cool....

Go to their website, and listen to a clip. Check to see if MTV has a clip. Go to Target, Wal-mart, Best Buy and about 30 others that allow you to listen to cuts from the CD simply by running the barcode under a scanner....theres all kinds of ways to listen to a group without breaking the law. Damn, use some imagination....lol
