The PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Thread

There were questions about Sony's "Reload" commercial, and some speculated it was for this game. I think this new one confirms, if not, at least adds more to that theory.

Yeah i was hoping it'd be a teaser for Infamous 3 but i guess not still cool to see how Sony is marketing this.

10/23 was also suppose to be when the new PSN store launched.
I've heard people say it could be that, but it really doesn't make sense that Sony would be marketing a PSN change, especially when one of their major criticisms is that they don't market their first party games enough, if at all.

Somehow, I think if inFamous 3 is ever made, it will be revealed in a grander way, like at E3 or something. Or someone might just leak it.

I went to Best Buy today and saw they had a kiosk demo. Playable characters were Kratos, Parappa, Big Daddy and Jak. I only used the latter 2 as I played as the others in the beta. Big Daddy is realy powerful and I got quite a bit of kills as him. I think Jak could potentially be one of the more fun characters to use. He is very combo heavy and acrobatic but he is good with ranged attacks as he brings in his guns into gameplay. I do think however he is very weak as I noticed myself dying alot with him

Notice any similiarities?

It's in this week's PS Store updates, yeah.

So Polygon Man, huh? I remember that dude.

I was hoping it'd be Polygon Man. Disgruntled forgotten icon who was the original Playstation mascot gathering the current mascots into a deadly game of Battle Royal.

See also Master Hand, Crazy Hand.

With Polygon Man as the head and the Hands as...hands, perhaps Nintendo & Sony can put aside their differences and take on this somewhat-bodied threat together.

I don't remember Polygon Man at all, but he's creepy as ****. Looks like something out of Lawnmower Man.

Yay Kat! It's a shame they couldn't get her in for launch but these are going to make for two really good additions.

Wow where have you been?

Haven't you heard? Oliver Queen's been stranded on an island the last five years. :oldrazz:

Anyway, I have to say I'm surprised Crash Bandicoot isn't in the game. Not one of my personal favorites, but those games used to be pretty popular. Personally, I would have loved Gex the Gecko to have been included. I loved those games back in the day. Maybe we'll get them as DLC.

It's not like they didn't try. Crash is big and they knew fans wanted him, but they couldn't get the character:
We obviously know at SuperBot and at Sony how important various characters are to the game, Crash Bandicoot in particular. We got this question at San Diego Comic Con and my president, Chan Park, gave a very good answer: ‘It takes two to tangle’. We know the fans want Crash. We want Crash. Crash is not owned by Sony. So it is a negotiation between Sony and the IP holders for all of the characters that exist in the game. We’re very interested in making that happen but it’s not for free. I do want the fans out there to know that obviously we recognized the interest in Crash and characters like Crash.

Played this at a friends. Enjoyed it but all the characters are very meh.

Yeah, the roster is not as eclectic as Smash Bros. You got maybe one or two wacky weirdo types in PaRappa and Fat Princess, everybody else is some kind of badass.

i got it last night and bc Im away for hte holiday wont be able to play it again till maybe Sunday. Initial impressions

Pro:
The roster is relatively short, BUT every character with the exception of the two Coles feel really different. I think they did a good job at creating 19 really diverse characters that arent clones. Even the Coles play differently (although they share some attacks). They definetly with quality vs quantity and I can appreciate that

The gameplay seems quite deep. Its not too simplistic and actually will take a bit of strategy and skill to win

Con:
The presentation is a bit subpar. The menus look very basic and I think they could have done a better job at making things "pop" so to speak. Little touches to presentation really does help add to the experience

Story mode is a bit of a dissapointment. Quite generic. Trying hard to bring Smash Bros into comparison but it would have been cool if they did something similar to the Space Emissary mode

There are only 20 characters. To me its not so much that the number is low but that IMO it contains too many guest characters and not enough Sony originals. There are several glaring ommisions that they have the license to and could have added like Nathan Hale from Resistance. I guess the chance for DLC and thankfully the first two announced are Playstation characters. Also, Raiden, but no Snake? I wonder if Lara Croft was even considered

Other thoughts
Ratchet is overpowered. Seriously he builds up meter quite fast and his LVL 1 has good range, its powerful and you can easily kill 3 people at once with it. In my first online match, i got 17 with him and the second highest score was 5. Second match, I had 13 vs 1.

I think they laid out a great foundation for a new franchise. They primarily focused on gameplay with this one and getting hte mechanics right. i think the sequel will add more in terms of modes, characters and extras

Oh and another thing i noticed was that this had no manual in the game case. Do no Sony games come with them anymore? I first noticed this when I bought the recent Infamous, Jak and Ratchet collections and figured that line of games werent doing them.

Parappa
Ape
Toro
Fat princess
Sackboy
Ratchet
Jak & Daxter
Sly Cooper
Sir Daniel.

I think thats quite an eclectic bunch of colorful characters. About half the roster contains the more "cartoonish" types with the others more mature

Hmmm I'm considering reviewing this on my radio show in a couple of weeks. What's the online like? Is it only 4 players per match, Smash Bros style? Is there a lobby system?
