The politically incorrect thread

I thought we were talking about fat people now

Ok, I'll bite. There's a fat girl at work, and I was talking to her about another fat girl. And I called this other girl, 'This fat girl,' and the fat girl I was talking to kinda looked shocked because I said 'fat girl'. So I started thinking, is there a better way to be saying what I'm saying?

I was thinking of other ways to say 'fat'. They all seem redundant. I've come to the conclusion that I should keep it out of conversation when talking to fat people. Because I don't want to be saying things like 'big boned', 'large', or 'thinly challenged'.

--

See, the thing is, people are defensive. I might not think too much about being overweight, because I'm not . . . so it isn't on my mind. But a fat person - sorry, big boned :) - has to live with it every day. So I know that if I talk about fat people, fat people who are listening will either be on the defensive, OR they'll just be fine (because some people are more understanding and not as touchy).

It's like, you tell a fat person joke . . .

How do you get a fat girl into bed?

Piece of cake.

. . . and some fat people will laugh, while others will start shouting about their rights. It's the same with gays. I know some where I can call em sweetheart and they laugh, whereas others will take offence.

But, I have my own flaws - yes, it's true :( - and people are free to exploit them. And I will try to be as understanding and good humoured about it as possible :)

Religion + Politics = Not a good mix, imo.

Excellent point. They are not supposed to mix. The goverment has rules about these things.

Banning moviefan will be sufficient [/hand gesture]

Eggy, I would hate to see MF or Jman spice banned. I would like to see both of them get a sense of humour though.

Yes it was...but I came across a website...the American Association for Fat Acceptance....I don't know the exact URL, but it was basically making the case that Fat or obese people are a disaffected minority....

I know. I was only joking. :cwink:

Oh, and :lmao: @ 'butt pirate' :D Puts a whole new spin on 'shiver mi timbers' :oldrazz:

I visited Australia and I heard the term 'poo-jabber' but I digress..

Hahaha! Never heard that one. 'Back-door assassin' is the name of choice in Manchester at the minute.

I think that is an amalgam of star stabber and pooh pot pirate. Fudge packer is a similiar term. I don't really mind poofs myself.

Eg. Religion + Politics = Taliban *shudders*

As long as he's not trolling or flaming, moviefan can speak his mind freely.

I think that some oppose to 'political correctness' because they want to be able to say things without consequences and they like to invoke 'freedom of speech' thinking that that should be their ticket to offend people. That's just irresponsible and selfish behavior, imo. Sure, you can say whatever you want, no one is gagging you but at the same time, know that there are consequences for the things you do and say. The world is made up with all kinds of people. What may offend some doesn't necessarily offend others and therefore we have to use good judgments in order to live in harmony and peacefully in society, whether locally or globally.

Some brand of 'political correctness' are just stupid though. Eg. Changing 'french fries' to 'freedom fries'... wtf?

(Wow... I sound like a freakin' preacher!)

MovieFan may seem a bit bullheaded...but he just reacts to whats thrown at him...he seems to be big on his faith and it governs his behavior....I have no major issue with the guy....

Aww you know I was joking. It would be a loss to the forums if he was gone. I may not agree with him, but I don't have to. He makes some great debates out of certain subjects ;)

Down to the crux. PC is important, but it's difficult to draw a line with it, hence some of the stupid examples on display in this thread.

'Freedom Fries' :lmao:

Deferred success is another PC term that ticks me off....just tell the kid he failed and he's a ******...that should motivate him

Thanks; I freely admit I'm bullheaded about certain things, but I honestly believe there's situations which rightfully call for it.

Getting back to the original topic of political correctness as a whole, I think so many people have taken it to an unhealthy extreme. They worry about offending the wrong person at the wrong time, and after a while, it can become paralyzing. I'm all for common respect and decency with people, but that doesn't inherently mean agreeing with every stance they take, and vice versa. I simply speak the truth as best I know it, and sometimes even I don't understand all the "whys" and "hows" about every situation. But I choose to have faith anyway, and I believe God's standards were put in place to protect us...even from ourselves.

Well, bear in mind that it could also have the opposite effect, crushing his spirit and making him think he's not good for anything. Remember the whole rhyme of "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me?" It's nonsense. Words have power, and if used improperly they can hurt, anger, offend, opress, and even enslave. That's why it's so important to use wisdom...and yet at the same time, we should never let an unhealthy level of concern for people's feelings stop us from speaking the honest truth.
