The Reagan Thread

Obama will need to have a few successes and a second term before that. At this rate he could very easily be more Jimmy Carter than Ronald Reagan.

And yes the Fed should make their affairs public, I agree. But this whole conspiracy theory of the Fed being the equivalent of "the Man" seems a bit much.

Looks like he is building a Clinton 3rd term, that alone could get him re-elected....and I stand by my prediction from months ago....he will be re-elected.

He'll get re-elected. The man's got noticeably better poll numbers/approval ratings than Reagan or Clinton had at this point in their Presidency.

The only polls that count are on the day you vote.

What you think you know, is not always the reality of politics. The reality of politics is seen over time of "living it" not reading about it...that's all...

Sounds like Truthiness, not facts, my friend. :cwink:

The FACT is, Reagan gave amnesty to illegals. The FACT is, he raised taxes several times. The FACT is he supported nuclear arms reduction. The FACT is while he was Governor of California they passed one of the most liberal abortion laws in the country. Reagan would be unelectable in today's Republican party.

Maybe....maybe not, only the reality of the situation actually happening would tell. NOW, someone besides Reagan, with those views today trying to win the post, would not win the in a Republican candidacy, that I could agree with.

Well of course if Reagan could literally run, they deify him so much, they might be willing to overlook those things. I was of course talking about someone with his views. Goes to show that peoples' supposed deep commitment to his ideals may be a bit shallow. It's more the IDEA of who he was, than the reality.

I still think it's worth noting that Obama is in significantly better shape politically than Reagan was in '83 or Clinton in '95.

I won't make such a far ranged prediction. I feel come July 2012, the mood of the country will determine if he gets reelected or not. But what he has more than almost any major national politician (at least the ones who are in Congress and running for president in 2012) is an ability to seem like an adult with common sense concerns. And what he truly does have over almost any politician is a historical long view. That is why he could be unphased by the damage he sustained in the HC fight and losing the 2010 midterm by historic proportions and still get about 3/4 of his agenda done before the GOP gridlock that kicked in this month. And why in times of true tragedy he was able to rise above the pettiness of politics.

Combine with none of the GOP frontrunners being without serious vulnerabilities--Romney the flipflopper/Romneycare, Barbour the Southerner who dismisses racism and segregation, Huckabee the nut who has said some bad things about women and the role of religion in government and Palin the....Palin--Obama has a strong chance for reelection.

However, if unemployment stays above 8.5% or (gulp) 9.0%, I could see him still losing in the end. So, it is really just too soon to tell.

P.S. If he does win the GOP field for 2016 will be far more competitive than it looks for next year.

On a side note, this image is immature and mean-spirited:

But it is hilarious.

What happened when JFK cut spending?

I'm a little surprised that no one commented on Reagan's 100th birthday.

And I think that is what will win him re-election. There aren't any real contenders for Obama unless Pawlenty really starts to get his name out there.

I watched the whole thing....it was very moving, and I didn't feel like discussing it so that people could drag his name through the mud.....quietly watching the celebration was enough for me.

I didn't watch any Kel. Honestly, I was unaware that Regan would've turned 100 today. Did Nancy speak?

Yes she did.....not long, but her voice was strong...and her love for him is still so strong, brought me to tears...

The fly over was fantastic, there was a camera in the lead plane, he said said "Happy Birthday Mr. President" and each pilot saluted....it was very cool.

The best speaker of the day was Baker....he did a fantastic job.

Many people forget that even though Reagan was the oldest President ever, he had the youngest ever, and still youngest ever cabinet and staff.....they were all there, and their love and respect of the man was extremely evident.

Yikes, I consider Reagan to be very overrated (a strictly middle of the pack president), but damn, no wonder why Kel didn't want to bring up his birthday.

Hey, its not his birthday any more..... so all is bloodshed in the game of politics...lol
