The Resident Evil Thread - Part 3

Okay, I am REALLY enjoying this game now. I've forgotten all about the crappy demo and all my complaints and this game has it's hooks in me.

And for all I know, the Chris campaign is the worst thing in the world, but to be honest, I've already sunk what seems like 4 or 5 hours into this game and I've only just finished chapter 2 of Leon's 5 chapters. This is going to be a BIG game, so who cares if across the different campaigns, they cater to different RE feels? I honestly haven't even given the other campaigns a second thought. The first chapter for Leon feels a lot like RE 2 in the atmosphere and setting, that is classic zombie, streets filled with wreckage and burning cars, civillians running around.. Then chapter 2 manages to feel a lot like RE 4, with a weird clandestine church, death traps, rusted old science labs filled with weird, freaky monsters etc.

Sure, it may not be survival horror. Sure it may be more action oriented, but you know what? At the moment, it is fun and it is thrilling. There are parts where I felt just as scared or tense as I ever did in RE 4 (and more so than RE 5) and there are action segments or boss fights that feel a lot more interesting.

I can't wait to try this in co-op either because some of these thrills could only be enhanced with another person. There's a great section in a cemetary where you get split up from your partner and there are old, Night of the Living Dead style zombies with shovels and pick axes roaming around and lurching from the darkness and that would be great to share the tension with another player.

I'm definitely not regretting this purchase yet.

Okay, wow. One of those levels just happened to feature one of my all time worst fears. That was nice and intense :S

Question about the full game. Did they fix the lighting? I tried the Demo again today and in a lot of instances it's like playing Alan Wake, because the enemies are basically just black, shadowy figures.

The Leon section from the demo seemed a bit brighter but the lighting is one of things I love about the game.

In the Cemetery section I mentioned before, it's night time, it's dark and shadowy and there's a rainstorm happening. You can only see about 5 or so metres in front of you and every time there's a flash of lightning, you can see a withered, gross zombie just standing right there! Figures come wandering out of the darkness. The shadows play tricks on you, letting you fall into the odd open grave (where of course, there are zombies wallowing in the mud, waiting to eat you unless you climb out quickly).

I think the lighting has been used pretty effectively. Also, I would say the graphics definitely look the nicest when it's dark, the lighting looks superb.

For instances like the Graveyard you just described, I don't mind if it's dark as ****. But in most of Leon's demo section, I could barely see the Zombies in the dark. And that didn't really enhances the scare factor, because I simply didn't get a good look at them. Might as well have been Javo attacking me with knives.

Yeah, that portion of the demo just isn't scary anyway. But the bit before that is and the lighting in every other bit is cool as well.

There's a train tunnel bit just like the subway tunnel scene in Cloverfield, if you've seen that. Pitch black and then you just see a zombie without legs crawling towards you out of the darkness. It looks pretty cool.

And you definitely get some good looks at the enemies and a lot of them look pretty damn cool.

There was a similar section in Operation Raccoon City that I loved. You're in the sewers and everything is pitch black. And the only light source you have a flares you can throw to light everything up. I'll probably love that part in RE6 as well.

The best way I can describe the game in general is that it basically feels like a playable version of the Resident Evil animated movies. You feel like a bad ass government agent but you also feel overwhelmed. You feel kind of empowered but you never feel in control. It's got that classic RE feel where whenever you overcome one ordeal, you know there's a worse one only a few creepy corridors and a slow opening door away :P

I like this joke

This movie is released on home discs or in theaters?

Finished Leon's campaign. Enjoyed it but definitely looking forward to the others so I can get the full story. I'm surprised about how intrigued in the fiction this game has gotten me.

How long did it take you? Was there any overlap with the other two characters?

Took about 8 hours? Yeah, couple of run ins with the others, some pretty cool scenes with them too. I particularly liked the Chris/Leon stand off.

Cool 8 hours is pretty decent for a single player game and since it looks like the other 2 campaigns wont be mainly rehashes with different characters, that looks to be at least 20 hours which is pretty decent.

Is there any multiplayer (outside the co op?) If there is, is it DLC like in RE5 or is it in the base game for everyone?

I have to wait till the end of November to get it :(
And I was thrilled they got the console release date ahead, hope for the same date for PC release

Theres 2 player mercenary mode but I think that's it.

I've read some reviews...Holding off. Maybe I'll pick it up a year from now when it's dirt cheap.

A lot of places are killing it. Even IGN who hand out good scores like they are candy couldn't find a way to give it an 8.

Even GT's review sounded like they wanted to hark on it more. It deserves these scores, I think. I am not buying this game, and I hope Capcom gets the message and stops trying to make action games with this series, and goes back to what it started out as.

Hmmm, I don't like the scores it's getting, but I liked the demo just fine. Eh, **** the critics. I'm buying it

I never trust reviewers nowadays. IGN gave Silent Hill Downpour 4.5 which was shocking.

After a couple of plays, RE6 was better than what I originally made out. I know things've been going down since 5 (aside from the 3DS game), but it's better than what they've scored it.
