I have pretty mixed feelings about Eddie returning as Venom. I, in some way, dig what they are doing with Venom in Thunderbolts, especially with the symbiote and for the first time, I really see the symbiote as a really frightening being. I don't like the angle of the symbiote having the upper hand and MacGargan being some sort of "puppet" (I know they sometime tried this approach with Eddie but it was always more displayed as a clear symbiotic relationship than parasitism)
We can discuss the legitimity of Brock's hatred for Spider-Man, but that doesn't change the fact that Eddie hated Peter with a passion, and I think that it's something they've lost with "the temptation of Eddie Brock" (he clearly apologized to Peter in it). Ok don't get me wrong, I loved that story, but what we saw was a broken man, in the last months/years left and fighting that visceral hatred and gaining the upper hand. They should have let him die in that suicide attempt, because even if at the end we saw that his dark side is still there, he's willing to fight against it, and in some way, this situation is worse than at the beginning of the story arc, because now he'll be even more pushed to become an anti-hero
And that's the problem I (and I've some of you too) have with Venom: he has to remain a villain. Sure, even Green Goblin and DOc Ock have shown some humanity sometimes, but not the way Marvel tried to sold Venom as a anti-hero.
Clearly, the problem I have with Eddie returning as Venom is: how are they going to restore that hatred he has for Spider-Man/Peter without it being forced the way it was the first time ?
