White lenses, 5 minutes prologue, wow. My "Joker" is rising.

ComicCon was one room, one place. This is multiple places at different locations.

I know, I'm just saying that the bootleg side of it isn't entering at all into the equation. They're not doing this for the bootlegs PR. If anything, they really, really hate that.

Why wouldn't he be willing to try something new by shooting a prologue and give people a taste of what they're in store for when they see the other IMAX scenes in the film.

Most IMAX movies are only about a half hour long and have pretty low production value. The reason for this is the extreme difficulty and expense in filming in IMAX. Personally, I'm amazed he's doing it for this movie. Because he's not filming sea turtles screwing and flopping around on the beach like most IMAX films, he's filming explosions and fighting.

The reason is he'd be doing an incredibly large amount for relatively nothing. He's not just filming in IMAX, he's filming high caliber stars doing actions stunts in IMAX. He can probably only film a handful of these to begin with - I can't imagine him taking one and saying, "Well, we'll just make this one for fun and give it to some other movie. Just a little thing I want to make that is only elliptically involved with the movie, just a taste."

It's like buying a Mercedes so you can drive it to Grandma's down the street. Once. And then giving it to some other dude.

I can see a great IMAX sequence setting the tone for the Joker at the start of this movie that would totally leave you breathless once the credits start. And I can see them taking that and putting it in front of another movie, so then the viewers would say, "OH MY GOD I WISH THIS WAS THE REST OF THE NEW BATMAN MOVIE."

A lot of people don't even know the movie's coming, or who's in it, or that it features the Joker. Seriously, they don't. So to have some little side-piece that occurs between the first one and this one and explains the gap, and then to make that little side-piece in a ridiculously expensive way, that's just bad business. It'd be expensive and confusing for most viewers. I can understand the Anime thing, not this.

Haha,
And not to mention one of their IMAX camera already was broken during the filming.

Of course they hate when bootlegs get out, but as I said this is multiple locations, so it's inevitable. They can't regulate that. So that's my point: why release the first 5 minutes of the film 7 months in advance so that by the time people get to the movie, they've already been there and done that? No matter how many people would have been exposed to the footage during that time, that still means that some number of the movie-going population will get in their seat and be saying "Yeah, okay who gives a ****? We've seen this." That's not what Nolan and co. want, so I just don't see it happening. I don't think it will be included in the film. It has to be a completely separate piece.

The reason for this is the extreme difficulty and expense is filming in IMAX.

Yes, I'm well aware. That's why I said he's probably doing this as an early showcase for the IMAX cameras and to show people what's in store for the other scenes in the movie that he also shot that way.

Just like all the kids in here have been saying, more butts in IMAX seats.

Yeah, you're right, some people are clueless. Is the anime a cheaper way to fill in gaps? You're darn right it is.

But, I think these animated tie-ins suck. I hate when movies do that. I think filming the actual actors and attaching it to another movie is a great marketing ploy, all while making it IMAX exclusive, so it helps promote that. Whether they think the anime tie-in is "cool" or not, they really want to see more of the ACTORS. That's a fact. And the general public couldn't give two s**ts about the anime thing, let alone if they're even aware of it in the first place.

Hearing someone come back from IMAX after going to see I Am Legend and screaming at their friend: "OH MY GOD THEY HAD THIS AMAZING BATMAN PREVIEW ABOUT THE JOKER AND HEATH LEDGER WAS IN IT! THAT MOVIE IS GONNA BE SO OFF TEH HOOXORZ!!!" is way more effective, in my opinion.

Then when they get to the theatre to finally see the film, that footage isn't in it. And why should it be? That's old news. BRING ON THE DARK KNIGHT! And then of course, DVD's sell like hotcakes, so they can include it as a feature on the DVD.

Yeah, but you can just as easily do that with footage from the movie. And probably in a better way. And it would cost a lot less.

Imagine seeing the first five minutes of The Fellowship of the Ring in IMAX. Then, six months later when it came out and you saw the ads, would you think, "**** that, I seen the first five minutes of that movie. I knows it all"?

I can't see that dissuading people from going. Again, they may be confused because they don't know anything about this movie at all, and there's some sort of weird backstory minimovie being passed around showing it off.

Great news, on the 'gangster hunting' thing in HK.

Here, example:

Just think of some awe-inspiring start to the movie that features Joker robbing a bank of all its money, much of which (presumably) belongs to some high-powered gangsters, and then have him standing and looking back on Gotham and the wreckage that he's already caused, and laughing and saying, "Ready or not. Here I come."

Then the screen is overtaken with bats and the Bat symbol appears again, much like in Begins.

This would be the normal start to the movie. In IMAX it would cut to Christopher Nolan smiling and, hell, I don't know, smoking a blunt and saying, "That was the first five minutes of The Dark Knight - you can see the rest of it in Theaters and especially IMAX in July 2008."

Tell me you would not have a rock hard rodney for that movie once you saw that. Just tell me that your rodney would be hard enough to sharpen a diamond on it.

Well, I wouldn't go see a LOTR film anyway. :oldrazz: (Not a fan...)

I didn't say it would dissuade people from going. I'm just saying I don't think it would be the best move to start the movie RIGHT OFF THE BAT with already previously seen footage. It was a little different in Spidey 3 because that was some action footage from the middle of the film. I'm just saying, starting it OUT with it isn't a very good idea.

Plus, these backstories work just fine. Hotel Chevalier/The Darjeeling Limited comes to mind. (And YES, I know it was free. And YES, I know it didn't cost $10. And YES, I know people could watch it in the comfort of their own homes. I'm saying: it works.)

No matter what the footage is, sure, of course it'll be ***** inducing! Long story short, I just think it would be a much more special and memorable event if it was exclusive footage. They can advertise it as being in IMAX only and not being a part of the movie-- ANOTHER way to get people to spend their money at IMAX and see I Am Legend.

I'd have understood all these critiques had Schumacher done Batman Returns and then BF, which would mean he'd drastically changed his style. Do people really expect Eckhart to utter this:

GORDON
Harvey... what happened to you?

TWO-FACE
Well, it's simple, really: DOO-DAH LUCK!

LMFAO!!!

I remember sitting in the theater, waiting to see 'Bug'. I had no intention of seeing this, but my friend insisted. S0 i'm sitting there and the trailers start. And then Hostel 2 comes on the screen, and its the actual movie...A scene from the movie, and its running for at least 5 minutes. It caught me by surprise that they would show so much of a film before its release. If The Dark Knight does this it will catch many movie-goers off guard. Brilliant idea if true.

I couldnt agree more. I think a prologue that shows The Joker's "rising" (as Nolan put it) is a much better idea than show the beginning of the actual film.

Has this been posted yet?

Apparently The Dark Knight is still filming in the Battersea Power Station after last week’s shocking explosion. Here’s an update posted on SpoilerTV:

On the evening of Sunday 21st Oct a couple of dark blue SWAT vans with ‘City of Gotham Police Dept.’ written on the sides were parked on the site, and a dark blue helicopter (didn’t see any insignia) was flying low near the power station. This morning (Monday 22nd Oct) as I passed the area on the train again, the two SWAT vans were still in the same place, but a long white tent had now been erected nearby and there were quite a few cars on the site, so I guess some filming must have taken place at some point during the day as well.

Meanwhile, a German website Kino.de has a very good article about The Dark Knight. The site is in German, after I translate it with Yahoo here’s what I got:
  • Batman will go to Hongkong for some kind of “gangster hunting”, but the producer Chuck Roven won’t tell us why Batman travels to Hongkong.
  • The IMAX preview with I Am Legend is the first five minutes of the film.
  • “The whole thing is not ‘Joker Begins’, because we did not tell how the Joker became what he is”, says director Christopher Nolan. “During these five minutes it is shown how the joker of the small crook becomes the most-dreaded gangster of the city - it is more of a “The Rise of the Joker”
  • Batman’s new mask will have white lenses on the eyes when he turn on the Bat-sonar detection.

Exactly. And if they want to milk making money off of IMAX and I Am Legend, then they'll be smart enough to bill it as exclusive footage not in the movie. Otherwise, people will just think: "Bah, I'll just wait until the movie comes out."

I mean, it won't HURT the film, but they want to make as much money as possible. Exclusive footage makes total sense in this regard.

Actually, I think everyone will be wrong come December 14th. Everybody is throwing a different story out . First there were whispers in my circle about a trailer, then comes the prologue, and now is the damn first five minutes of the film?! What can I say, except..........ZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

What if those first five minutes turned into the entire movie?!!?!! :wow:
