The Robin OYL Thread

Adam Beechen talks Robin

Adam Beechen said:
t's unlikely fans will find that decision controversial, especially in light of Cassandra Cain's continuing turn as a villain in "Robin," which hasn't sat well with many. The popular heroine had her own series, "Batgirl," which had a devoted fan following, the same fans who were outraged at Cassandra's re-appearance as an antagonist. Readers have wondered who made the decision to turn the former Batgirl into one of Robin's foes and when asked about the decision, Beechen explained, "When I came to the book, I was told that the first arc would deal with presenting Cassandra as a major new enemy for Robin. From there, I worked out the details of just how that would come about with our initial editor, Eddie Berganza, and then his successor, Peter Tomasi.

“As for the criticism, I understand it completely. I'd be angry, too, and I sympathize with fans of the character. It's a big change, a fundamental change, and it represents a big twist in the longtime path of the character, her quest to overcome her upbringing. The way I think about it is, I know lots of people who've struggled against bad decisions or circumstances in their lives for a long time, only to suddenly backslide into their previous behavior. It's a really painful thing to watch, and a terrible feeling, but it does happen, and I think it's what happened in this case. But I don't think Cassandra's story is completely told yet, so I hope readers will continue to follow the character."

So guys is the dude off the hook?

what's he referring to when he says she's backsliding into previous behavior? the fact that she was trained as an assasin by her dad? she has never behaved as she is lately, so i have no idea what he's talking about. she was a kid when her dad was training her and once she realized it was wrong she left him and fled to the states. then she took up the fight against evil with the bat-family, so it doesn't match up with what he's talking about. it doesn't sound like he knows her history very well and if that's the case, the editors he mentioned really dropped the ball by not informing him during the writing process. as far as i'm concerned he's not off the hook and either are his editors.

Yeah, that explanation is still bunk, because this was never her previous behavior. She killed like one guy because she was too young to realize what she was doing, immediately recognized the utter horror of what she'd done, and never did it again.

And on top of that, there's still a hell of a lot better reasons you could give her for turning villain than "OMG DADDY! H4T3Z0RRZ J00!" I mean this has Underpants Gnome Logic written all over it.

Step 1: Cain trained some other kid to fight

Step 2: ???

Step 3: EVIL!

But its clear that he was just doing the editors bidding. Its not really his fault, thats like faulting Chuck Austen for sucking ass, its not his fault he keeps getting hired.

I think hes getting a lot of unnecessary flak personally, but whatever, he shouldve known better damnit!

im sure johns made the call and beechen had to find a way to make it work... johns wanted her on his titans east roster to mirror robin...

right, i still hold the editors responsible for not doing their jobs, but i also fault beechen for getting her history wrong.

*bangs head* Dude, its a company line, his explanation is the same one Didio has givern a million times. I doubt he didnt know crap about her history, he just wasnt allowed to write that story. Its all Johns fault.

i think it's chuck austen's fault.

Probably, if he didnt suck so much he might still be on Action...

Hes calling your avatar queer. you said you dont do dudes, so he's asking if you're not gay, then would your gay avatar be considered metrosexual. Don't feel bad, its a lame joke.

Didn't care about Bat-Girl. Didn't care that she "turned evil". Yay for me.

Metrosexual means "having the posative steriotypical characteristics of being gay without actually wanting to have sex with men." It was probably a bad joke, but I don't intend to repeat it. Unlike some people who think that quoting bad 90s sitcoms is funny.

the jokes dead, go back to your pad and paper and come up with a better one, come back and try it out.

I missed out on most of the OYL storyline in Robin. And I know how horribly bad Nightwing OYL was.

So, how well does the Robin comic compare to the Nightwing comic at this time?
