Captain Marvel The Rotten Tomatoes/Critic's Reaction Thread

Still don't get the AM&tW hate...its so good! Low stakes, sure, but its better than the first, and better than Wonder Woman to me
BP's saving grace was its style and vision and production design and all the smaller elements that create a wonderful whole. But plot-wise? It is pretty damn basic, with an (imo) overrated villain
WW was basically just Thor and Cap mashed into an extruder and turned into a Marvel-like film that just happened to feature a classic and beloved character, in a fairly unexplored time period. Wonder Woman's cache as a character is the only thing that elevates it above "average"

So CM seems to just be lacking a hook, like BP's cultural aesthetic, and Wonder Woman's period setting and name recognition
and no, the 90's doesn't count as a period setting lol

Me and mine loved Ant-man & Wasp. I feel you, man. Honestly, the plot was basic...very basic, but the humor and the action saved it for me. Honestly, the whole experience was worth it just for Michael Pena narrating a retelling of the entire first movie, which was hilarious.

I loved BP and WW, too, but they weren't breaking any new ground STORY-wise. Yes, they broke ground with the production and cast of BP (BEST cast...ever), and WW was a character FINALLY getting her due, but, well...the WW1 Germans weren't Nazis...and that was forgotten in there somewhere, but I digress.

People like/dislike what they will, I guess, and I'm cool with it.

On the topic of A&W, I liked it. It's middle of the pack MCU though. I like it about the same as the first Ant-Man with a slight preference toward A&W. I like both Scott and Hope quite a bit. They play off each other well, and I thought Wasp was the best thing about the movie. If I have a critique, it's I would like to have seen Janet more. She has a huge presence in the movie, but I wish it manifested on-screen more. I feel like more could have been done with Hank being lost in the Quantum Realm, also. Could have gone a bit more Interstellar, IMO.

Let's face it, this is kind of a bad look for Marvel. It took them ten years to make their first female-led movie, and now that it's here it's just... okay? Even DC knocked it out of the park on their first try.

The biggest issue I see (having not seen the movie yet) putting the BS and the climate of things in our society aside, I just think Marvel didn't do a good enough job to establish this character as someone we should be looking out for. Particularly as she is supposed to be the new and biggest thing to MCU and will lead the way, I'm rather surprised the marketing has been dull.

Us as fans were eager and even then I felt some of us obviously are still meh...

But yea, they should have mentioned her or hinted towards her in other films, could have did more to build her up. I can see how this is not something people have been dying of anticipation.

My enthusiasm for this movie is me being a fan of these films and hoping to see how this all connects to the bigger universe and of course End Game.

Just came home from seeing, I'll post more detailed observations in the review thread. I'll just say that I disagree with Jeremy Jahns (and not for the first time). I'm not sure if the thing he said was stupid is the same one I'm thinking but I did not find it stupid. What I think Campea or the Schmoesknow review guys said about the first act or hour being slow or almost boring but the plot threads created during it tying up during the second and third act, is pretty accurate. Again, I'm Finnish, we don't throw hissyfits about sjw or feminism, so we don't pay attention to or look for such things in entertainment.

How many reviews are expected ? WW review count was at 417.

Black Panther had 458 reviews and IW had 421 reviews. If it gets about 417, then it can get about 40 more Rotten reviews to stay at 85%.

300-350.

Very few movies have received over 400 reviews.

Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born is the most reviewed movie of all time, almosts 470 reviews o_o.

Black Panrher is #2.

Critic's don't decide, how I feel about a movie.
And, I don't need this to be Marvel's Wonder Woman, just my Captain Marvel.
Right. Critics are just normal people and they shouldn't influence your opinion. I do like hearing some of their opinions, though. But I noticed that doesn't really have a lot to do with my question of wondering how general reception would be if Endgame weren't around the corner. I just wonder if some of these people are being a little easier on Captain Marvel because A) It's Marvel Studios or B) Endgame is a month away and will probably be a critical darling. Maybe it's neither of those options, but it is food for thought.

Personally, I would've loved for this film to be Marvel's Wonder Woman for everyone. The energy with this movie just feels different, and not necessarily in a positive way. I know that's asking for a lot, but it is Marvel. Look at what's been achieved. Again, we have an incredible, energy-fueled release right around the corner that dwarfs anything most movies have achieved with Endgame. Just wish they would've handled this film with more care, because it could have achieved greatness. That's strictly going off of what I've been seeing and hearing, though.

Right now it's on par with Ant-Man.

I think people just had too much high expectation after IW and want "innovation" from marvel.
and CM is not and don't try to do that. imo If this was releases years ago, it would get better score and reaction from some critics.
Yeah, people said that in relation to Aquaman and Venom as well.

Well, as someone who really likes Venom, I have to agree. Venom was tons of fun, and as a huge Venom fan, I wish I had seen it in the theater. My son and I have watched it quite a few times. I hate that I let the critical consensus sour what would have been an excellent movie-going experience for me. As for Aquaman, I don't care about the character (sorry, no offense meant), so middle of the road reviews weren't going to sway me, either.

That being said, 10 years ago, Venom would have gotten solid reviews. I mean, Spider-Man 3 is positive, and Venom was FAR better than SM3 (which is a low bar, I know).

We've all become very spoilt with the quality and quantity of good CBMs available. All 3 of these films would have been received better before the bar was raised so high.

My favorite CBM (since this is a topic now) still stands as The Avengers. Before that, we had the promise of it all coming together, but when we finally saw it, for me it was movie magic. Yeah, we've seen plenty of crossover since, but that first time it happened and we saw them come together was the most special for me. I do think IW/Endgame (since I view it as 1 story) can maybe do that for me again if Endgame sticks the landing. But until then, give me The Avengers!
Agreed. The Avengers is still number one to me followed closely by infinity war, civilwar, gotg, Black panther, Ragnarok and Winter soldier.

I may struggle with #2 between CW, Avengers and IW but it's TWS as the best MCU movie and honestly best on the genre for me.

My favorite will be Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse for a long time.

As for live action, I have to go with Captain America: The Winder Soldier.

Winter Soldier is my second favorite of all time.

It looks more than ok anyway - the consensus shows that. Alas, Marvel would have been hoping for something Black Panther level of cultural impact. That's clear by the marketing.

I read a great take the other day from a fan elsewhere in that it simply comes down to CM perhaps not having hook Marvel needed. CM is a character they're trying to fit into a role. Too bad other studios had arguably some of their best known characters and run them into the ground over the years. It's so easy to envision an MCU being carried forward by a young Jean Grey or inspirational Sue Storm.

I'm not worried about it anyway, just looking forward to seeing a good film on Saturday.

I know I'm gonna get pelted for this, but I always thought TWS was a little...overrated, a great movie don't get me wrong, but not in best MCU territory, or even top 5...for me. I'm gonna go hide now.

You can run, but you can’t hide...

YEAH!! Well....you better run...

Kidding. Everyone's entitled to their opinions.

I don't really care about Jean, I've had enough of her, now Storm is the one I looking forward to. I can't wait to see Marvel's take on the Character.

It's a great movie, but it's not in my top 5...now what, I ain't running. Lol

Storm as well absolutely. That's the thing I mean about Jean - it's sad that fans are at a stage where they're exhausted by the character. Feige's biggest challenge yet will be to fix a lot of X Men characters.
