The Rotten Tomatoes/Critic's Reaction Thread

Doctor Strange is an example of a movie that I thought was pretty good, and there were some interesting things about it. Like the finale.

But I never connected with it emotionally, and I've never really gone back to it. Maybe I should at some point? Anyway, that's not the case with this movie. This was more like Panther, Guardians and Wonder Woman for me.

While Doctor Strange showed more of Strange's background, it did it in a rather slow or dullish way.

I enjoyed this much more than Doctor Strange as well. I still like his solo film, but I didn't really become a fan of him as a character until Infinity War. Doctor Strange didn't pick up for me until the fight at the Sanctum

I loved Captain Marvel and even came up in my personal score when I saw it a 2nd time, but based on the comments on Dr. Strange I appear to be in the minority as I loved that movie as well and would prefer it over Captain Marvel as well. Surprised to see the comments about Doctor Strange-- can't relate one bit as I'm a big fan of the film. To each his or her own I guess.

Well for what is worth, critics agree with us. :o

I thought Doctor Strange was more faithful to the source material. I might need to rewatch CM as I thought it was a weaker film than most are saying here. I rate it a 7-7.5 whereas Strange is an 8

I was very surprised how closely Carol's origin hewed to the source material. I was assuming there would be major changes but in the film
Carol gains her powers due to the energy backlash from the explosion of a miracle device. The explosion was the result of a confrontation between Mar-Vell, considered a traitor by the Kree, and Yon Rogg. Carol developed amnesia, believed herself to be a Kree Warrior, and initially her powers were limited by this confusion.
That's pretty much a direct lift from the comics.

Well, I like Captain Marvel, but I liked Doctor Strange better. Better visuals, and, well, I don't know...something about watching his journey was awesome for me. Carol's journey was fun, too. I like them both, but I've rewatched Dr. Strange quite a bit. Probably the Ditko fanboy in me....

The plot held my attention a lot better than in Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange is a pretty standard hero origin story. Only the visuals and clever way Strange beats Dormammu offer much in the way of originality. Captain Marvel actually kept me guessing where they were going.

I liked Dr Strange, didn’t love it. It had some issues, mainly the timing of the humor(Captain Marvel was better in that regard) but I did like it better than Captain Marvel. it was a much more visually dynamic film, which goes a long way with me, and I felt like Benedict Cumberbatch just seemed more invested in what was going on. His character arc was more standard than Carol’s, but it works.

90 rotten reviewers being 21% of the total reviewers to talk about this movie make it the most reviewed movie on that site. At least of the ones I saw reviews for.

Love both Strange and Cap, but yeah the former is more standard than the latter, until that amazing bargain scene.

Agreed. I think Strange is a great character himself and I would say I liked how he evolved in his own movie more and Strange wins on visuals as well, but the movie surrounding Carol was better. Better script, better supporting characters, etc. Also, Dr Strange has a fairly badly done love subplot. One they forget about like, 20 mins into the movie and then try to force back into the movie for about 4 minutes. Captain Marvel doesn't fumble a plot thread like that. It's much more cleanly paced.

The humor really felt forced in Doctor Strange as well. Whereas I thought it was pretty natural here. I'm usually not one to complain about humor in marvel movies, but I felt it in Strange.
