Captain Marvel The Rotten Tomatoes/Critic's Reaction Thread

I’m getting the feeling, hope I’m right, that they follow the first Thor three act structure: super powered by unworthy/lost, humbled earth based with amazing fish out of water humor and motifs, self discovery/realization come to form.

Most worried about first half non-linear flashbacks. I liked it in Batman Begins, but normally I think it can ruin the tempo. It made the first act on Man of Steel an absolute chore for me.
From many of the negative reviews, that non-linear flashback usage in CM is something that they don't quite stick and makes some of the emotional connections not land quite as solidly.

Begins did a much better job with flashbacks than MOS did. The flashbacks were linear, which is what I hope for CM.

With a lot of the doom and gloom around here, you'd think this film was getting an Aquaman type critical reception and fans were worried it might creep under the 60% benchmark.

Yeah I usually stick around the DCEU boards and I have to say that it seems a little silly that some here are fretting over a score in the 80s when on the other side we consider a score that’s not a green splot to be a victory.

Just hope Marvel fans appreciate their good fortune.

I DO!
I cant wait for this!

You only have to read the reviews to see even the positive ones aren't exactly glowing with praise.
I have noticed that a lot of reviews are using phrases like "necessary hurdle" and "starting point." If this was another shared universe those same phrases would not be used forgivingly. Campea is for example talking out of both sides of his mouth in his review.

I certainly do. I grew up at a time when a good CBM was a rare thing indeed.

They just can't get over BvS and Justice League, can they? I just want to hold them down, start telling them over and over again, "It's okay...you can like both"...repeatedly, until they break down crying and screaming, "NOBODY TOLD ME IT WAS OKAY!!"
:funny:

My guess will be around 80-81 final with about 200ish to come. It’s an envy to many films out there not to mention the looming BO smash.

I think it stays above 80%.

What's crazy is that the number of reviews keeps changing. Earlier tonight it was up 184 reveiws, now its down to 146. They had 33 top critics, now only 28. The same thing happened yesterday. At one point there 118 reviews, then later it was down to 78. I call shenanigans.

Sometimes you have to refresh, as it first shows up as an older version of the page. Right now it's at 186.

Their site is weird in that it'll show old and new versions randomly. Every time I do an update of the scores/reviews, I have to refresh just to make sure the data is actually current.

"Even"? I wasn't expecting the negative reviews to be glowing with praise. :D:

Same. I don't think fans, even some who have been active in these circles as long as we have, appreciate the fact that just a decade ago or so your "average" superhero movie was on-par with X3 and Daredevil.

I wasn't in love with, say, Ant-man & The Wasp and would argue it's a pretty 'average' superhero movie but ten years ago that would have been game changer. That's a pretty monumental shift.

Scores are declining slightly but now a big chunk of reviews are in, so it shouldn't move significantly from here.

Maybe they erased them like they did the "Don't Want to See" score. :o

Kids today are spoiled!!

Seriously, they are. The fact that we get so few outright BAD comic book movies nowadays is saying a lot. I mean, with the exception of the DCU, X-Men: AoA, and the Amazing Spider-man films, there haven't been that many truly divisive superhero movies coming out since 2008. Not everything has been an Avengers, Winter Soldier, GotG, or Spider-verse, but there aren't a lot of awful ones.

The fact that we're looking at our fourth Avengers film in a shared movie universe, meaning that we're, what, 20 films into this? If any of us had heard that this was going to happen 20 years ago, and that the movies would all be watchable, let alone GOOD, some even GREAT, we would have all united to bash them until they walked away from the internet with their screen name deleted forever from the Hype.

Yet, here we are...11 years into a shared marvel universe that has featured Ant-man running up Captain America's shield while it was being held by Spider-man in an airport in Germany. Not only was that totally believable, but it was totally awesome.

Yeah, a lot glitchier than usual.

I would put X3 in the "average" category but not Daredevil. That film was just bad. The theatrical release anyway, not the directors cut which is vastly better than the one in the theaters.

The most creative diss I have seen so far is "Its more Captain Meh-vel than a Marvel for me" I have to admit that one did make me chuckle.

Yeah I think sometime we forget how far the industry has gone in such a short time period.

I was the same where Ant-Man & The Wasp was a little bit of a let down for me but a lot of that was I thought it lost a little bit of magic that the original had. Also like you said its a case that this film could have just been a 6 or 7 out of 10 when Marvel has gotten us pretty much expecting at least an eight.

Hey Wonder Woman is a really good movie lol, I cant really argue with you on the rest:funny:

This was what I was saying to a buddy when Infinity War came out and my mate was asking why I was saying it would make a billion. There has never been a film event before than had 20 movies, plus shows and shorts leading up to one massive crossover event.

No doubt. WW was awesome!
