Captain Marvel The Rotten Tomatoes/Critic's Reaction Thread

34% Audience rating with just over 10,500 reviews. Wow! This botting has absolutely got to stop. To put this in perspective, the Lego Movie 2 which came out three weeks ago has just over 26,000 audience reviews. Who are these people that have this much time and energy to waste just to slam a film like this?

Add to those the 54K votes which have already been removed. I mean seriously, wth is wrong with some people....

Beginning to think this will end up at around 78-79% with the way things are going. It's trending more towards Thor/AoU level of reviews. I could live with that as I think both of those are decent films.

RT users score is only 34%, poor word of mouth.
It will have a big opening weekend, then the b/o will nosedive.

Boy i haven't seen an RT thread this wild since the BvS one.

Fun times that was, haha.

Much of that score is still being weighed down those wrote negative comments/reviews before the film even opened. Reading the comments of those who likely saw it after actually opened, it's more like a 3.5-4 star user average. People giving it 1/2 and 1 star reviews mainly seem to be either bots (they have no other rating histories and noticed some comments that were nearly exactly the same) or trolls looking to drive the score down.

You really believe the user score, when pretty much all of them were made before the movie even came out? The only true indicator will be Cinemascore, and the WOM after the movie is released.

One of the more measured reviews I've seen so far. Doesn't carry any of the fanboy baggage either. Has more of a general audience POV.

The Last Jedi went through something similar, but that movie is waaaaaayyyy more divisive than Captain Marvel. This is just trolls being trolls. TLJ RT was a lot of trolling too but many regular folks and fans weren't down with it.

Wow. I thought the smear campaign against Dark Phoenix was bad but it’s nothing compare to this. They even got to Metacritic.

I haven't seen it yet. I was supposed to at 7pm but the roads were crap. I'm seeing it at 940pm instead.

I really hope the trolls didn't win.

Can it be uncertified if it drops below certain point? Any precedent?

Yes it can be. It will lose its status if it falls below 70%.

Rotten Tomatoes said:
Certified Fresh status is a special distinction awarded to the best-reviewed movies and TV shows. In order to qualify, movies or TV shows must meet the following requirements:

  • A steady Tomatometer score of 75% or higher.
  • At least five reviews from Top Critics.
  • Films in wide release must have a minimum of 80 reviews.
  • Films in limited release must have a minimum of 40 reviews.
  • Only individual seasons of a TV show are eligible, and each must have a minimum of 20 reviews.
A movie or TV show that reaches the requirements for Certified Fresh doesn't immediately receive the designation. Instead, it is automatically flagged for our staff's consideration. Once the team can determine that it's unlikely the score will drop below the minimum requirements, they will mark it Certified Fresh.

If the Tomatometer score drops below 70%, then the movie or TV show will lose its Certified Fresh status.

It looks like Marvel's 9-film streak of getting at least 80% is going to end with CM.
Well you know, it's not the end of the world obviously, but maybe Marvel could've avoided this if only they had put more effort into their friggin first female-led movie instead of playing it so safe.

It pisses me off that I waited years for a Captain Marvel movie that I didn't even like. Screw you Marvel, now I'll have to try to avoid death for the next 4-5 years if I want to see the sequel.

I believe the only MCU film to ever lose its Certified Fresh status is Thor: TDW, which was able to only hang onto Fresh.

With the recent rash of poll/review bombing, I think these rating sites are going to be making more changes to prevent it. IMDB started weighing their user scores and while the scores do get depressed a bit, they do tend to go up to a fairly reasonable level that isn't likely that far off from what it would have gotten. RT will likely continue making changes so the user ratings aren't bombed or trolled (you can tell which ones typically are when the user score and critic score are 15 or more percentage points apart.) Metacritic doesn't seem to anything in place so you can't trust their user rating at all, especially when it's so far off the critic rating.
