Edgar Wright Direct Stephen King The Running Man Paramount Simon Kinberg – Deadline

Paramount Pictures is making a deal with Edgar Wright to develop to direct a new adaptation of The Running Man, the futuristic novel by Stephen King that the author first published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. This won’t be a remake of the 1987 film that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger; the Baby Driver writer/director will co-write the story with Michael Bacall, and they will be much more faithful to King’s bestselling novel. Bacall will write the script.

That sounds like him considering the source material.

Meh

Doubt it will be as good as the Arnold version. So many classic lines in that movie lol

Edgar Wright doing KING?!?!

I don’t want to get graphic, but I have quite a mess to mop up over here...

A forgettable Arnold movie for me, so why not ?
The Arnold version was nothing like the book anyway.
Product placement: a closer movie version of the book, Le Prix du Danger 1983 from Yves Boisset with Michel Piccoli and Gérard Lanvin.

I love the old movie, but yeah, it's not an actual "good" movie and it's very dated. I still love it though, mostly cause of prime Arnold and 80s future cheese.

And from all accounts, the book is very different than the movie other than the basic plot. With Edgar Wright, this should be pretty exciting!

No, it's a great one. :D

That said, Edgar Wright can do something truly special with anything and The Running Man is kind of perfect for him. I am excited Christmas Tree!!!

Well, this is an instant watch.

Eh. I say leave it alone. You won’t improve on it and honestly there isn’t a reason to update it

Am curious to see where this goes. The novel is very, very different to the 1987 movie.

I've never read it. Is it tonally different or just plot wise? Or both?
I would say both. The basic plot is pretty similar as are some of the character names and that I would say is about as far as direct comparisons go.

Having grown up with and watched the movie countless times over the years, when I read the novel, I was completely taken back at how far apart they were in similarities.

I am HYPED. This is a perfect match.

I desperately want Nick Frost and Simon Pegg on this, maybe as Fred Victor and Bobby Thompson, the director and host?

I'm intrigued as to who they get for Richards and Killian.

I reckon Robert Pattinson would be great for Richards.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Ben Richards in the book is like the anti-Arnold. Scrawny and sickly. I think people will be shocked when casting is announced for the lead.

This is true. He's basically described as about 6'1", slim and scrawny.

The Arnold movie is fun but it has barely anything in common with the book. This is a great choice for adaptation, especially now. Edgar Wright can basically do no wrong so him working with King, with this material in particular is just... *chef's kiss*

I don’t care if Ben Richards is bulky or scrawny but he needs to be Austrian because as we all know, there are a lot of Austrians with names like Ben Richards and Harry Tasker.
